A bit late to the party on this one, and I think I know who to blame: They Might Be Giants, whose rockin’ tunes inspired me to pour an immeasureable volume of beer into my face last night. Their show at the Satellite Ballroom was, hands down, one of the funnest shows I’ve ever seen in Charlottesville.
Halfway through the show, a little birdie leaned over to me and said, “I’ve never seen so many nerds in one place.” So true! Here’s to nerd rock, and the purveyors and consumers thereof.
I espied at least one other cVillain there. Who else went? What did you think?

wanted to go, but was just too worn out. i am officially old. went to their last show at starr hill, and it was fantastic, so i’m sure i missed a good time. damn.
Hi, Stanley! I poured only water into my face during the concert (thank you pub crawl, for affecting my ability to consume alcohol for the next 24 hours), but still had a rockin’ good time. Until the power died during the long, long, long wait for an encore.
Crowd: Clap-clap-clappity-clap. Clap, clap. Clap?
Band: “Um, yeah. About the power, which is halfway off. That’s a problem.”
ThatBoy and I were still pub crawl punished and decided we’d heard all the classics we cared to (Birdhouse? Check. You’re Not the Boss of Me? Check. Anna Ng? Check. And many more.) and vacated the premises. Only glaring omission to that point: Istanbul (Was Constantinople). Did they ever get the power back? Good show, even if they didn’t!
Did they ever get the power back?
They did eventually and played a rousing encore, wrapping it up with a killer version of “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)”.
Figures! Ah, well. Glad it all worked out.
funnest show? awwww, kinda bummed I missed it, but I’ve seen them so many times in so many venues I felt it was okay to skip this one.
5: It was my first time, mc. And I’m sure it wasn’t your last chance to see a bunch of locals bop around like loons.
Yeah, I had seen them a lot too so I figured it’d be same to skip. Of course, if Satellite closes up, then I don’t know where bands of that size would even play. Looks like long drives to Richmond ahead.
err.. safe. Thor, get an edit post plug-in in here!
If the Jefferson ends up looking the way I think it will, inside (raised stage, no chairs and sloped floor [please, please, please on that last one]), I could see TMBG playing there. Could be fun!
I am pretty sure there will be chairs as the Ash Lawn Opera people were (as of a year ago) planning on performing there. The empire got to use the opera’s tax credits to subsidize the rehab, the opera moved its offices to the empire’s HQ-annex. Also, Willaim & Mary - owner of Ash Lawn - was threatening to kick the opera off their property as it is a non-historically accurate use of the property.
Hmm. Then they are replacing the chairs, if that’s the case. Which, seriously, they needed replacing. I’d sort of hoped for removable chairs of some sort. A no chair option, if you will. More versatile, too.
They ripped the chairs out a while and - after storing them at the Ix for soome time - gave them away. Perhaps they will have removable chairs, but I don’t know where they’d store them. Good idea though.
Cecil must die
Heard that the Jefferson is now contractor-less and once they do get the contractor issues settled it would be over a year before they were ready to open their doors. Once the Satellite closes its doors, I’m not sure where there will be a venue of that size around here? I should start a business doing a shuttle from C’ville to Toad’s Place and the National…
