My wife and I were looking for a good place to get a sandwich on Saturday morning on our drive out to Lowe’s. We thought that we’d stop at C’ville Coffee. On the way there, we both simultaneously realized that our hangovers weren’t ready to sacrifice the fountain soda. Seriously, that was the deal breaker. So we kept driving. We ended up at the New Deli, a place we’d both been to separately, and sworn to its goodness.
I’ll admit, I’ve been there before and had not so impressive results. A Turkey Reuben I ordered one time came with very little meat, and lacked the slaw I had requested. But I could see the potential and went back. This time, I ordered a steak and cheese and the wife ordered a hot Italian. We spent the few minutes at a booth waiting for our sandwiches quizzing each other on the questions offered in the “Coffee News”.
The sandwiches arrived faster than we expected. Both were very tastey. My steak and cheese was great, Philly Style. The bread had soaked up a little of the leftover grease, but never fell apart. It had a good amount of mayo on it, but not the “Id of Jared” amount as parlie described. I was glad I upgraded from chips to the fries, which were not overcooked, lightly crunchy, and not-too-greasy and lightly peppered. Needless to say, we both ate the whole things, which was actually quite a task. I even tried to sucker my wife out of her pickle by telling her that mine was terrible. She didn’t bite. (all innuendos intended).
Anyway, I recommend this place if you are looking for a good change of pace to the chain subs around town. It’s not quite the New York style deli I had once hoped it be, but I’ll got there over subway or Quizno’s any day. And we even got our fountain sodas refilled in “to go” cups, when we left. On our way out, I inquired about how long it had been there. “Since 1984″ I was told. I don’t think much has changed since then, and I hope it doesn’t.

The hunger is calling to “New Deli”.
I’ve been to the New Deli once, and my sandwich was mediocre. I’ve been thinking about going back, and probably will since you said it was so good. If you’re ever up that way during lunch again, you have to go to The Carving Board. It’s a small sandwich place that also has really good soups and salads. It located near the ACAC in Albemarle Square. Be forewarned, they always have a 15 minute line during typical lunch hours.
@2 -I agree but would give New Deli a slight uptick from mediocre to medicore/solid. Nothing you haven’t seen/eaten before, but some of them done fairly well. Re the Carving Board, I was there just once (not up that way very much during the day) but I was impressed with with the sandwich andd service I got.

New Deli - not so much
I keep meaning to try this place…I’ll have to make my way up there sometime…Lil’ Dinos also makes a pretty good sub. I love their bread. Its a couple doors down from The Carving Board. I hear their fries are good too…not much of a fry eater myself, so couldn’t tell ya though.
New Deli, thumbs up. Simple, fairly priced. Not the best sub in town, but I walked away content.
Carving Board, its a shame this place is up 29 so far. If it were downtown it would be a lunch time staple.
Is Zandi’s still around? It’s up near New Deli. I haven’t been there, but I heard their bread is delish–from someone who hasn’t been in years. Just curious if anyone knows anything.
so now Gobbler is an admin too? WTF? Lilith goes away and you let a the peanut gallery come forward and post? but not everyone who posts regularly, just a few precious few? what kind of bullshit is that? do we have to know Thor in real life or give him handjobs or something?
@7 yes and yes! the line forms to the right, please.
People aren’t admins just because their names show up in the author name.
Would you care to elaborate? Clearly they (vanillavy, Lu Sid, Stanley, Gobbler, parlie) have the ability to post articles without emailing them to you. What does that make them? Why them? Just curious…
I thought that articles were supposed to be submitted using WordPress, which would then prompt Thor or whomever to approve the blog for publishing. At least that’s what I’ve done in the past and it showed me as the author when it finally published.
@11, yes, I’ve done that too, however at some point they took away everyone’s ability to login and write. To get a post published you had to compose it in Word or the equivalent and email it to Thor or lilith and they would post it and credit you if you wanted… thats the way it is for me and most others? I can’t login and write squat, but that seems to have changed for a select few…
The natives are restless . . .
Clearly, a post-Lillith purge is afoot.
The only admins are me, parlie and D/R people.
Stanley can publish; the other’s can’t without an admin’s approval. We are still working on removing IP addresses/emails so everyone (whether we know or not) can write in the wordpress dashboard.
Lies!
@7 - Anigans, we call them Tuggies now…
It’s not our fault wordpress sucks for security of multiple writers, sorry guys!
Help! I’m being oppressed!
Come see the violence inherent in the system!

@6: I went to Zandi’s on Thursday because I work on 29N and I must say that it was the worst lunch experience I’ve had in C-ville in a long time. They were out of every type of beef and the cashier didn’t know the menu or prices… There were 5 of us, and even though we all ordered something different and got charged different prices, we all ended up with the exact same food: a bland chicken skewer over bland yellow rice with tomatoes on the side. I used to like Zandi’s, but after that experience I much rather drive the extra miles to get to Aroma’s in Barracks.
i heard thor and parlie were hooking up…
btw, the Carving Board at Albemarle Square has awesome lunch and really great service
Yes, the Carving Board is fantastic - the sandwiches are great and super-fresh (I daydream about the crab melt) and the service is quick and friendly - but is it just me or is the female owner who always works the register just so unbelieveably upbeat it borders on creepy? Can anyone honestly be that overjoyed all the time? And is it just me, or is it weird when someone your own ag ecalls you “honey” and you are both under the age of 35 and white?
/yes i am a bad person
@24: omg i lub the crab melt. and that chick is so nice. i always saw it as she must be one of those first-time business owners that’s still eager and enthusiastic. the real question is why are you creeped out by genuinely nice people?
so true… part of me loves her, part of me thinks she’s gonna pull out a gun and shoot me, no one can be that nice
Tis a cynical world we live in.
I think it’s the being from NJ that causes me great anxiety when around the unabashedly joyous. I imagine the LA equivalent would be openly enjoying eating food or the Charlottesville version would be shamelessly throwing recyclables in the trash in public.
@28: i think you should post about it
I did email this post to the admins, as I do with all the posts I’m responsible for. They know me well enough not to give me responsibility like that.
@28
I often shamelessly and openly throw recyclables in the trash in public. My office doesn’t do a good job of offering recycling opportunities, my trash service doesn’t offer the option, and I’m lazy and anti-environment. Ok, that last bit isn’t necessarily true. I AM lazy, but I’m more anti-environmentalist than anti-environment.
whoa, whoa, whoa.
“My steak and cheese was great, Philly Style. The bread had soaked up a little of the leftover grease, but never fell apart. It had a good amount of mayo on it, but not the “Id of Jared” amount as parlie described.”
gobbler- dont EVER order that in philadelphia. youd get shot for ordering a cheese steak with mayo. you can get shot for a lot of things in philly, but that is near the top of the list. authentic philly cheesesteaks are melted cheese whiz and steak on a fresh baked roll. the inclusion of grilled onions is open to debate.
this coming from a person who has taken 3 hour detours on my way home to go to pats. i am to cheesesteaks what lilith was to truffle oil.
Carving Board has an excellent asian salad. But for the best sandwich in town, clearly Take It Away is the ONLY option (plus they have lots of tasty wine, chocolate, and other assorted gourmet snacks…mmmm, Nutella).
I just heard that the New Deli is being purchased by a Charlottesville native who plans to shut down for a few weeks to update the decor (and thankfully the bathrooms). I also heard that there are plans for a patio and free wifi. The menu will go through some changes but the plan is to keep the classic TND sandwiches along with some new additions. Ok, the new owner is a friend of mine who I think is up to the challenge of keeping this 29 staple a local affair. Oh yeah, TND will be serving breakfast when they reopen…a much needed offering on this side of town. I am told, The Not So New Deli will be New Again by late summer! This should please the 29 Lunch Bunch. You heard it here first.
