“And now she is dead.”

I know that is an awful title. Sorry about that, and I sincerely mean it. I was reading this article in hopes of posting it on the site for content purposes. I thought the topic was interesting and I had a lot to say about it. I recommend everyone read the article the topic IS interesting. The reasoning behind posting the article changed after getting about halfway through it.

Here I was, reading the tragic story of a girl who decided to get surgery to make herself look prettier, which brings a discussion in and of itself, then the story says,

But the 18-year-old high school senior, who was headed to college and then medical school, felt she needed to be even more perfect. Her breasts were asymmetrical and she had an inverted areola, so she went to an outpatient cosmetic surgery clinic in Boca Raton, Fla., to have what she saw as a problem attended to by doctors.

And now she’s dead.

She died Sunday, 24 hours after undergoing surgery, the victim of an extremely rare reaction to anesthesia called malignant hyperthermia.

Which brings an entirely more important feature of this story to my attention. How insensitive is the TODAY SHOW.com? I mean why in your right mind would you write a story and then mention the most IMPORTANT piece of information by just coldly throwing it in?

I am not the most sensitive person, but even I think this story was written all wrong. No in way would I mention a girl’s death, “AND SHE IS DEAD.” I may be overreacting (I may not seem it, but I am female), so it happens. I guess some people are just not the literary geniuses we are on this site (kidding).

I just think some things should be written with consideration of the situation in mind.

Lilith’s title is too sensational for a woman’s issues topic, the topic wasn’t taken seriously, I was a female who took some offense to the topic not being taken seriously, you did not… it just doens’t feel consistent to see this with this title now, after the stuff about how you don’t like hanging out with other women because they’re shallow? I know you’re going to rip me a new one, now, I’m ready for it… waiting…

TV “news” in general can be pretty dumb, so while that article is incredibly insensitive, I wouldn’t call it surprising. Getting your news from the Today Show (or any of its lookalikes) is like getting your news from People Magazine. Watch tomorrow morning. Will probably open with some big headline (suicide bombing in Iraq, Bush major economic address, etc.), and then they’ll say something like, but first, the story of the puppy who was too cute, or the girl who never thought she would make the cheerleading team. Sorry to hate, but I think crappy news is one of the things killing our culture.

the worst part, for me, is the implication that she died from having plastic surgery. this is basically anti-augmentation propaganda disguised as a news story. plastic surgery didn’t kill this girl. a rare, undetectable reaction to anesthesia that could have happened during any kind of surgery killed her. if she’d died while having a knee replaced, would matt lauer be telling people with bad knees to suck it up and by a wheelchair? sure, the article clearly states that this could have happened to anyone during any type of surgery. but who’s their source on this? oh, the president of the plastic surgeons association. no conflict of interest there, huh? it’s ok, i guess. that point of view only got 1/18 paragraphs in the story anyway.

  8. 31 Mar 2008 at 4:07 pmorchid said:

the plastic surgery was elective. if she hadn’t chosen to get a boob job, she would still be alive. so it’s pretty much her own fault she’s dead.

@8. Just like it’s Natalee Holloway’s fault she disappeared during spring break. You know the two kinda look alike. Hmmmm….. I’m not trying to be funny this time.

How does an aereola get inverted? I’m afraid to google it at work.

Well according to another article on that site her mother said “She had a birth defect, and she was extremely self-conscious about it all her life” So I don’t think it’s exactly the same situation as some kid who just wanted bigger boobs…It is tragic though and I agree with Blanco Nino about them kind of sensationalizing the situation, probably just because ‘Cheerleader dies after breast surgery’ is going to get more readers…

Also not a fan of American Idol…but there’s worse reality t.v out there…I tend to dislike reality television in general though…

I think we may need a separate post just on the sheer suckitude of American Idol.

  13. 31 Mar 2008 at 4:41 pmBlanco Nino said:

@8 - my point is that it’s irresponsible journalism. it leads the reader into thinking this allergic reaction can only happen during plastic surgery, which is not the case. yes, she died b/c she decided to have a boob job. but she would have died if she’d decided to have a joint replaced b/c of a sports injury. but i’m sure that wouldn’t have even made the local news, much less “today”.

if so many people have seen her boobs at that age that she’s so self-conscious about it, she must be slutty. therefore being slutty killed her. moral: don’t be slutty.

@1 This was never about women. Posted this out of shock from the way the article was written and because this girl died from a surgery that was HIGHLY unnecessary. Seems many of my fellow villains agree. I only mentioned my womanhood to help explain my view on the lack of sensitivity. I for one expect jokes to be made on my posts and hope nothing I do is taken too seriously, in fact life is not only too short, but I’d be less inclined to post without all the entertaing comments from villains.
@17 That is soooo my Tuesday! You are amazing. We can hang anytime.
@ Everyone. Great responses guys, you all made many of the exact points that came to mind when reading this article.
