Orbit to Shut Down after Tonight?

Is tonight closing night for Orbit? Still waiting for details… (and skeptical given April Fool’s jokes).

Update:

OK just found out they aren’t opening tonight.  And they are for sure CLOSED!

It has been sold. To who I don’t know nor do I know any more details right now

Thor would appear to be trying awfully hard to put one over on us. It’s nice that he cares enough to try!

I agree. I am a bit intimidated by the place, I tend to avoid it.

orbit is the site of what is to date the best scrawl i’ve seen on a restroom mirror:

that said, if it closes i don’t know where i’m going to play pool. not that i have in a year, mind you…

/knows miller’s has pool. does not want.

@ 4. That birdie got you thinking huh? Orbit is actually alright. There’s a little of a mix, and I can almost promise that Sir Scowlz is sitting there sipping on something.

@4, Orbit is the place you’ve probably heard 99% of people in town refer to as “Orbits”. Kills me. Fortunately no one here has typed it as such.

Great happy hour (5-9pm) with $2 drafts (about 12 to choose from, and good ones), but then after 9 the place can get prooty sketch and smoky. It’s on the corner under the railroad bridge.

I went there for happy hour a number of times. They had about two dozen beers on tap, most of them pretty good. It’s too bad it’s closing, but it was kinda dumpy by corner standards. That leaves bascially one college bar on the corner, I guess…Three, which is the Corner trying to be downtown. There’s always a line to get in Wednesday through Saturday night. It’s the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig, but I guess the kiddies like it because of its pretentiousness.

I’ve heard from a reliable source that the owners of Mellow Mushroom bought the place. I think it’s gonna reopen in a few weeks without many aesthetic changes, and then during the summer they’re gonna redo the interior. I heard they are still going to have live music downstairs but are going to have a much different upstairs….and they’re going to have good food.

Awww…an ass-kicking happy hour has met it’s demise. A shame! I wouldn’t normally be so calm about it, but I’m still reeling from hanging out with Scowly & various villains @ South Street last night.

How do you feel about “Raptures, ” Tuffy? I hear that one a lot.

Wow. The Garrett. That’s old school. I did love its scruffy weirdness, though.

curses! Orbit’s happy hour was quite the happy haunt for me when i lived in town and they had (imo) one of the best bartenders in town who ALWAYS took care of us.

@19 The Garrett was a great bar. Downstairs was the Mousetrap, then El Greco’s, then Spaghetti Warehouse.

Tangent–I hear a lot say Orbits, and they also say Raptures (as opposed to Rapture). Rapture’s got pool for those looking for a new joint (Miller’s too). Also, Kegler’s up 29N has pool I think.

  24. 02 Apr 2008 at 10:21 amecho said:

West Main and Miller’s are the only dollar tables I’ve found. Rapture charges something like $11/hr after 8pm.

@10 The kids at Three. standing in line for its pretentiousness are just in training for standing in line to get into Blue Light for its pretentiousness once they graduate. You don’t think they’re born with those skills, do you?

Do not go to Kegler’s for pool. You will pay a ridiculous per hour rate for broken tables that are the same tables that were there (they were broken then, too) when I used to play there several times a week six years ago. My husband and I went there after the Villainous wine tasting at Crush and couldn’t believe they were charging about $10 more an hour than they did back then for the same crappy tables.

I used to play at Orbit’s on occasion and am embarrassed to admit that I am one of the ones who says ‘Orbits’. I never really paid attention to it.

They do have pool, but every time I’ve been there, they’ve organized some ridiculous testosterone-fueled pool tournament, taking up all the tables. Can’t we just take turns playing on our own? Shesh.

(Also pissed me off because they asked me but not milady to play; jerks.)
