Behold the Zo Ca Lo Brunch Menu…

It’s very pricey. I think too pricey, maybe.

I will publish my review in the upcoming days, but have any of you been yet? What do you think?

Menu is after the break…

Yeah it is $$$. Looks yummy though!

Okay, I am usually one to justify high prices (especially for local or organic food), but get rid of the lump crab with the soup and charge $5 or $6 and then maybe I’ll consider it.

Otherwise I think they can pull off the prices if servcie is impeccable (for example, I’ll pay $16 for crab cakes for brunch because I’d happily pay that much for dinner, but you better give me dinner level service - no waiting for coffee for 20 minutes, no shot glass of orange juice vs a real glass, and dishes that all come out at the same time because cold eggs are terrible).

    What’s wrong with whipped cream?

    it’s objectionable.

It’s like the ketchup of dessert.

@4 - I understand objecting to brunch, but not loving whipped cream? that’s like hating sunshine or chocolate mints left on hotel pillows.

/dreaming of fresh strawberries smoothered in bourbon scented whipped cream right now

@7 i love ketchup. one time when i was on a math team field trip, we went to a wendy’s & i didn’t have any money so i drank ketchup through a straw.

@8 my first boyfriend’s only fantasy had to do with whipped cream. i had enough to last me a lifetime.

  10. 22 Apr 2008 at 2:35 pmshenanigans said:

@8: I am not into whipped cream. Too dairy-y. But then again, I also don’t like milk or ice cream.

@9: I knew you like ketchup, but through a straw? Wow. Have you tried ketchup on your pizza? I never tried it, but I had a friend in school who swore by it.

@10: You don’t like ice cream?! I don’t know what else to say, but…you don’t like ice cream?!

  13. 22 Apr 2008 at 2:44 pmorchid said:

@12 that’s gross. but you’ve never seen me eat pizza, have you?

@10 do you eat soy or rice ice cream or just NONE?

  14. 22 Apr 2008 at 2:44 pmorchid said:

    @11 yeah, pretty much.

i went sunday before last. the french toast was big enough for 2 and delicious.

service was fast. had my meal in under ten minutes. it was close to empty at 12noon.

glad they are doing a saturday brunch, too.

we’ll go back for the good food and no wait.

  16. 22 Apr 2008 at 2:49 pmecho said:

@13: No I haven’t. Do you eat pizza differently than everyone else?

Such a pedestrian fantasy… fetishes are so, well, limiting.

Is this an odd food thread yet? French dressing on cottage cheese! I learned recipe that from RM Nixon.

@11: Not really. I’ve tried to go vegan and now it seems too rich and milky. I can still eat cheese though. I know, I am weird.

sounds delicious! can’t wait to check it out.

what i am excited about is brunch service that starts before noon! before this i thought my only other option was the omni’s brunch . . . which actually is great - local meats, organic preserves, omlet bar . . anyway - cheers to ZoCaLo for starting brunch at a decent half past ten!!

As for being pricey, I think it’s in line with some of the other higher-end brunch spots: L’Etoile and Boheme (where I recently paid just over $50 for brunch two; it was delicious and worth it, I should add). So, I think there’s a market for these pricier options.

Having said that, I’ll mostly stick to the greasy spoons—mmmmm, blue moon.

  25. 22 Apr 2008 at 3:45 pmshenanigans said:

I lub Blue Moon. But I still want to try “the Scramble” with a passionfruit-guava bellini.

@ 15 - i had the exact same experience this past sunday. i’ll happily go back for the delicious french toast, speedy and careful service, and excellent coffee.

/also dreaming of those drenched strawberries. mmmm.

I can understand the pricing, decent crab meat and seafood in general are getting pretty damn expensive to get these days.

Sounds like a good alternative if I have the extra few dollars, cuz waiting for well over an hour to either get seated(blue grass) or receive your food(blue moon) can get a little annoying.

What time does the Guad open on sundays? They have all that huevos nonsense AND my official drink of Spring-time: the frozen peach margarita.

BTW, Stanley, L’etoile only offers brunch for Easter and Mother’s Day.

Oh, noted. For some reason I thought it was becoming a regular thing. Thanks for the corrective.

Blue Grass sucks. You have to line up outside like a moron, then you get in it’s got the ambience of grandma’s trailer in West Virginia. Followed up by bland diner breakfast foods and inattentive servers.

Brunch is not an option for joints unless the revenue stream needs a bit of help. Curious.

  31. 23 Apr 2008 at 2:26 ameduardo said:

    @29 yep!
    @27 its not THAT expensive
@24 Boheme is not even close to being that expensive for brunch (and I dont work there anymore so I am not neccesarily promoting… I am just saying)
@15/26 if there is not an abnoxious wait then the couple extra bucks probably makes it worth it! Zocalo has always had yumalicious (not a word I would use for Scrabulous… unless…) food… and 3 or 4 bucks to avoid a bunch of abnoxious white people? money well spent in my world… just saying.
abnoxious seems to be describing me at this point so I will retire.
yay happy glitter and shit. XO

sad to say, i’ve heard this saturday will be the last brunch- not a lot of folks coming to check it out and staffing overworking both back and front of house, they want to keep up the standard of service for saturday night.

it seems pricey- but as usual, it’s highly unlikely you will leave hungry. unlike some places you get potatoes or fruit or some “side” with plates that should get them.

and i’ve eaten the french toast. it is ridiculous. i also give a stamp of approval to the scramble: three eggs with carmalized shitakes, manchego, spinach…

and service is quick for brunch. it’s all yummy- and a friend made the recipe for the bloody’s and he knew what he was doing~! light as can be a bloody.

    mango bellinis…
a partner in brunch crime had the steak and eggs- it looked good and plenty- i just don’t eat that kind of thing.

see you there after the market?!
