Veggie Tales 4: Eppie’s

If you are looking for the vegetarian deal of the century, then Eppie’s on the downtown mall is the place to be. Their menu offering is pretty meat heavy except for the side’s section, which allows you the choice of a veggie only platter in 3 or 4 choice combos with a generous piece of corn bread.

I opted for mac n’ cheese, collard greens and coleslaw. For around 6 bucks I received an impressive amount of food that I couldn’t even finish. Everything on the plate was good quality. Not to say there isn’t any room for improvement like making the collard greens in a more modern manner or using a different cheese on the mac n’cheese, but the value per vegetable was really good. They had a wide variety of sides on the menu which I will definitely go back for. For a southern food lunch, it was light and left me happy…happy to know even with western fare this vegetarian craze can be satiated!

I also noted one of the kitchen staff came outside to offer a bowl of water for one of the customers that had their dog with them. I found that to be a terrific gesture. Talk about southern hospitality!

    Vanilla,
Glad you enjoyed it. While we’re better known for stuff like jerk chicken, we try to be very veggie friendly (i.e. all of our sides/veggies are vegetarian, and all but 2 are vegan). For vegetarians, or those veggie inclined, here’s the other veg-friendly options on the menu.
All of our pasta sauces are vegetarian (marinara, Alfredo, and pesto). And you could add fresh spinach or steamed broccoli on top of a pasta (broccoli goes well with Alfredo sauce, but Alfredo sauce is very, very unhealthy = butter + heavy cream + Parmesan). It tastes good though.
3 of our salads are vegetarian (the Daily, the Santa Monica, and the Greek).
Our soup (Tomato Bisque now, Gazpacho when it’s a little hotter) is also vegetarian.
We also just added a few sandwiches, 2 of which are vegetarian (apple and brie, or hummus and sprouts).
For some other veggie options downtown, I suggest:
Blue Ridge Country’s Salad Bar, more veggie options than you can count, or
Zocalo’s Chile Relleno, a nice upscale veggie option, or
    Fabio’s 12″ Cheese steak Deluxe.
Ok, that last one’s not legit. But I ate it the other night, and it blew me away. Give it a try next time you want a cheese steak. Footlong for $6.50. Awesome.

I heart Eppies - dangerously good food. It feels like the prices went up recently? I know, I know, the prices are going up everywhere, but I was hoping Eppies would be able to avoid the hikes so I can keep getting my jerk chicken/mac-n-cheese fix.

    Hey Lu,
Glad you like the food. Our hours are now “more or less” Lunch 11:30 - 3:30, Dinner 5 -9, Monday - Saturday. I say more or less because if you come in at 3:45, and there’s somebody here, and we’re not putting together a giant catering order or something, we’ll happily serve you. Likewise, the kitchen doesn’t “shut down” at 9. If you’re in line Friday night at 9, we’ll keep serving a while longer. We do have to close at some point, but that’s generally the person who shows up at 9:15 or 9:30.
And for 5star, Re: Food Costs,
Our prices haven’t really gone up recently (the prices we charge anyway). We just got a new menu board, so it may look different, but all the prices are the same except for the veggie plate. We used to offer a 4-veggie plate with cornbread for $7. Which turned out to be a little too much food for $7. So now there’s a 3-veggie plate (with cornbread) for $7, and the 4-veggie plate is $8.25.
As for what we pay for food, prices are going up pretty much across the board, so we may have to increase prices as some point. I’m trying to keep prices as low as I can, but here’s a few examples of what’s going on behind the scenes. When we opened, we were slightly less than a $1.00 per lb for chicken. Now we pay closer to $1.20, or a 20% increase. And my supplier has warned me that while chicken prices have gone up, I should get ready because they’re about to “really” go up. We’ll see what that means. Likewise, one of our suppliers just instituted a fuel surcharge, so every time they deliver (3 times a week), I get charged an extra $7 that I didn’t used to get charged. Which isn’t a lot when you think of it as just $7, but over a year, that’s over $1,000. Well, back to it.
    Happy Rainy Monday everybody.

I like the Divide’s PB too. It’s a little different, but anytime you mix pumpkin bread, beans, and rice, you’ve got a winner.

@18 Thanks for inside scoop - I think the switch from getting four veggies for $7 to three was what threw me. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you’ll be able to keep your other prices down for as long as possible.

As for the “bread” options at Eppie’s, I am more of a cornbread fan myself. Mmmm, crumbly goodness…

  25. […] Eppie’s: I took a turn for real comfort food and tried this downtown mall favorite. Out of all the places I tried, Eppie’s delivered the most bang for the buck. A lunch plate combined of three vegetable sides for around $6…amazing, and more amazing is that this could have been enough for two people. My only big complaint was the taste of everything on my plate could have been kicked up a notch. Notwithstanding, there are MANY Eppie’s fans in the cvillain community, job well done! […]
