Hints of a Space Party: Choose the Charity!

space charlottesville

Do you recall the Alien Space Ship invasion from April 20th? In the name of cVillain, I offered myself to the aliens and have recently returned to earth. While they couldn’t probe me because of my thunder and lightning powers, we did sit down to plan the next party.

I explained that cVillains and 106.1 The Corner had OFFICIALLY raised over $2,100 for the HIV/AIDS Services Group! They decided they wanted to be involved in our next party. While the ideas for an “Illegal Alien” party on Cinco de Maio were quickly shot down due to fears of the Feds and their fallen Area 51 comrades (and some earthly, political correctness issues), we decided we wanted to throw a party in which all aliens were invited.

The details require top secret government clearance, but will soon be released to the public. We are leaking the date of the party: May 25th! Trust us, the party is going to be amazing.

This time, we will let YOU pick the charity and will give all event proceeds to that charity! Initial submissions start now and end on Saturday, May 3rd at Noon. We hope to raise more than $2,100 for the charity of choice.

FOR THE FINALISTS, GO HERE!

Rules…

  • Submit an entry by adding it to the poll or voting on one that has already been added.
  • Entries must be submitted no later than May 3rd at Noon.
  • We will choose a final list of 3 to 10 non-profits based on the number of submissions.
  • The final charity will be chosen before the party on May 25th.
  • If we detect any cheating, we have the right to disqualify any entrant.
  • Charities must be approved 501(c) 3 organizations.
  • All proceeds will go to the charity that you choose!
  • We can change the rules.

I’m sure a lot of them will come to the party to help support things. SPCA has an email list too. We wanted to make this a little competitive and someone’s gotta be second place. @106 I wonder. Similarly, isn’t Children, Youth and Family Services an arm of the government? People need to remember that anything they add to the list has to have 501(c)(3) status. A worthy cause is not necessarily a 501(c)(3) organization.

I actually think it’s pretty cool how into this everyone’s getting (minus the animosity). This is folks getting worked up about giving money to charity, not over whether or not bud lite constitutes a mandatory bar option - i wouldn’t go so far as to say we’ve evolved (’cause I don’t wanna), but this is new territory for Cvillain.

And sure, most folks may never come back to the site again after voting for their personal cause, but to see so much hype about a mere $2,000 is impressive. Yippee for everyone’s competitive drive to support a cause.

One Vote per IP Address!?! LAME, LAME, LAME. And not too bright. There are all kinds of scenarios where many people or computers are hidden behind a single IP address. Offices, proxy servers, even some ISPs have multiple unrelated customers all sitting behind a single IP address.

Not too bright of you Spunky Bears, either. In response to a desperate plea on behalf of poor starving kittens and puppies I took the time this morning to contact over a dozen people I know here who seldom or never read the crappy bloggy. And all but two told me that they were blocked from voting. So you’ve not only killed the virus that feeds your marketing strategy, you’re IRRITATING CUSTOMERS! Arrrghh!!

Come on guys, you have people logged in. Why don’t you just limit it to one vote per user name? I admit I might have 10 or 20 different usernames. But I would never use them to cheat on the vote. Unless it was for a good cause like Puppies & Kittens…

Besides, if I really want to cheat and you are going to use this lame IP address thing, I can always use my 3 Class C address blocks with an IP-changing script and send you hundreds of votes. But of course I would only vote for the One True Cause. God’s Chosen Cause. The Cause of the Righteous. (That would of course be Puppies and Kittens.)

Excuse me now, I need to get back to my consulting client Bob Mugabe…

I can testify, I may be normal on the outside but my urges to kill are under control thanks to well meaning adults who intervened when I was younger. And think of it this way, by helping potential serial killers, you’re probably still helping puppies and kittens cuz that’s how it all starts, usually.

I am trying to raise awareness about some forgotten people living outside of the scope of most people’s attention. A Guam-based AIDS Service Organization (GUAHAN Project, http://www.guahanproject.org/index.php) with very limited funds provides HIV prevention and care services to impoverished people who live in the U.S. affiliated Pacific region–American Samoa, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam–which suffers enormous health disparities due in part to very limited Federal assistance, and in part due to the post-colonial era annual per capita income: for example, it is only $2,900 in the Marshall Islands, and $2,300 in the Federated States of Micronesia. For comparison, the U.S. annual per capita income is $46,000. This organization and the fragile societies of incredibly unique, indigenous people it serves really need support. A small donation to the GUAHAN Project can make a huge difference in stemming the tide of HIV in these small, culturally rich enclaves that could be destroyed by HIV/AIDS.

If this subject interests you, I can provide pictures and documents to further illuminate the situation.

I appreciate your time, and wish you all the best in your work.

Did you notice that Patience Crabstick fell off the face of the earth ever since she started homeschooling. I think it is a sect and thus should be swarmed by SWAT teams with tear gas and DNA test kits.

(from 191) We are affiliated with a non-profit 501c organization

Which we will not name. Of course.

A little research reveals an internet savvy (hitting up various message boards for votes) and very small group of home schoolers, although I’ve yet to determine if they are of the “Leviathan was a brontosaurus” flavor. If I had to guess, I would guess there’s some serious well fed post hippie action going on…

“Corporate America” in caps? You know what I blame? Society.

Whatever this group is, from the photos on the coordinator’s blog, they sure as hell don’t seem as hard up for cash as almost any of the other charities listed above. Why not sell one of your many late model cars (check the slide show!) if this trip is so important? And slandering public school? Ooof. Its the only option for some working poor. Homeschooling is a pretty boojy option you should feel grateful to have. Folks like me aint got it.

Not to go all ‘nanigans on you, but this is pretty lame. I will definitely be campaigning in the finals - for anything else.

    Care to clarify Odyssians?

Re 197/209… Our “conspicuous silence” is due to the fact that we are a small group of working families who don’t have time to banter back & forth about who’s getting drunk at the party. Some of us may be well fed, but that’s relative. I know some well-fed people who work for charitable organizations.

The coordinator’s blog, to which you refer, is not directly related to our Odyssey of the Mind team, but rather her own personal blog where she shares her own personal opinions, photos, etc. Since she blogged about our recent success at state competition, she mentioned it here to give us validity, because someone had questioned it. Don’t shoot the messenger.

Albemarle Homeschoolers is a sectarian group with no religious affiliation, for those who are wondering out loud. We are regular people. Not scary. Really. Not nearly as scary as some comments on this site. Please tell me you don’t really lump all homeschoolers together as either religious fanatics or barefoot hippies. Isn’t this the 21st century? Suddenly I feel like I’ve been transported back to 1959. Weird. Trust me… “WE” are from all walks of life… just like “YOU.”

(For the record, I drive an old Ford station wagon when I’m not using my feet to get around.)

@214, While I do not lump all home schoolers together as hippies or religious fanatics, there does seem to be a common denominator that I believe is the sticking point perhaps for B’yo but definitely for me and that is, despite not being “well fed” surely you have enough money on one income to have a parent around with your kids all day. I am not so naive as to think it is one parent all by themselves and understand there are group activites etc but surely when not actively educating, you are planning materials for your next turn. So you are opting out of the very, very fine public school system to do it yourselves. Thats pretty high on the hog livin to me. And a choice. To opt out of a community cooperative system such as public education that we all have a stake in and choose to do for your self. Fine. But that does not seem the same as organizations that work for the greater good for our community. Shenanigans is passionate about the SPCA, probably because she hates seeing puppies and kittens starving in our community, “M” is all over Boys and girls club, again community oriented. While I appreciate children are a part of the community, and your kid could be my gyno one day, you are opting out of the community at large to have your own “community”. Probably a pretty exclusive one. Not trying to be aggressive, just sayin why your group may not sit right with folks using the reasons it doesnt sit right with me.

I agree that the money should go to a group that helps the community as a whole. If it does, we ultimatly help serve the same population. Maybe in the future, you can petition to have your group added. Then Thor or whom ever the moderater is at that time can add it.

@217… “surely you have enough money on one income to have a parent around with your kids all day. I am not so naive as to think it is one parent all by themselves” (lol) … wow… I wish. Two of us in this 4-family OM team are single parents. Speaking only for myself, my income puts me in the category of “working poor.” People have a skewed perspective of homeschoolers, why & how they homeschool, how or if they contribute to the “greater good” of our community. Geez! As homeschoolers, some of us actually have more time to be involved in volunteer activities, charitable causes, etc. and we ARE! In my household, community service generally takes priority over academics. As for the value of public education, I guess that depends on your personal experience. We’ve been there. Had a good run for several years; but when your child starts getting beat up & administration does nothing about it, then it’s time to make a change. I appreciate that I have the choice to homeschool. I don’t bash public education & don’t judge those who choose it. At the present moment, homeschooling is our preferred option. In another place & time that could change. I’m not stuck in either decision & open to what is best for my family, given our current set of circumstances. But I’m not so bothered by people having differing views about schooling, charities, the worthiness of one cause over another. It’s the sense of division that I feel from various comments here… the assumptions, the judgments… makes me want to puke.

Oh. Then I must have misunderstood this. Or any of the other “messages”.

is a sectarian group with no religious affiliation

Unless you meant to use the word “secular” (a word I learned in my inner city public school) I am not sure what you mean here.

the sense of division that I feel from various comments here… the assumptions, the judgments… makes me want to puke.

Oh, I see. We make you want to puke, but you still want our cash. Got it. Well, good luck in the contest!

Pity you don’t have time to banter back and forth. I live for that sort of thing.

@223 You’re totally right, there are a lot of assumptions (hellooo internet..). I only know what I see and hear. What I see is you asking to participate in a charity event to support a competitive academic event that serves as a talking point during college admissions to (hopefully, oh please please please) an IVY LEAGUE school. Regardless of what I think is a deserving organization, sponsoring a competitive event is not what I call “betterment of community”.
Now, if you’re gonna puke, calm down and go get you some Dramamine or something. You sound like you need a foot rub or some tension tamer tea. For pete’s sake, it’s just the internet.

@223 and anyone and everyone. We have a problem here and it isn’t going to be solved with the current flow of things. Rose M @ 217 wrote nothing to acquire a puke fest. I personally have MANY issues with what you wrote. First of all, Good! I’m glad that you are in the community, but for you to come out and allude the thought that you have more time to be involved in the community is ridicules. I am going to go so far as to say How dare you. SPCA is all about the community, yes, they’re just animals but you can’t tell me that your heart doesn’t ache a little every time you see a dead cat or dog in the road. These people are gracious enough to house, feed, and protect them. B&GClub is entirely about the community. How great is it that they are working many tireless hours in hopes to raise money to build bigger and better facilities for the youth in OUR community which does include your child and the other children being Home Sch
