Final Voting for the Space Charity Party

We had over 2,200 votes in the Choose Your Charity nomination post. That’s amazing! Thank you for visiting our site and voting for your charity. Well, despite the disqualifications, the bickering and the insanity, we have our final contestants:

  • Relay for Life, American Cancer Society (456 Votes)
  • Computers4Kids (430 Votes)
  • Boys & Girls Club (259 Votes)

Congratulations for making it to round #2! The winner of the final voting tally will receive all of the proceeds from the party. Hopefully we can raise more than $2,000 this time because we are partnered with 106.1 The Corner and Charlottesville Sports and Social Club. Now, here is how round two will work:

  • You can vote online and the voting will be available on this post until Midnight before the final party on May 25th. If you buy a ticket (ticket purchase available soon and at the door) and come to the party, you will be allowed to vote again.
  • We will count the votes with the following formula: 1x the online poll votes and 25x the party attendee vote.
  • We will announce the winner at 10:00PM on May 25th.

I don’t know who you voted for, but you are wrong. I can’t believe you would vote for them. What a waste.

Hey, if you had made everyone who voted pay $1, we would have raised the money already.

So it is a “Choose Your Own Adventure” charity party. Nice. Sad I am going to miss it.

Seriously, kids and cancer are really popular causes that get tons of support. I’m not saying they’re loaded or underserving of $ but I would prefer to maximize our impact by helping out a smaller charity. Does C4K fit this bill? Probably the neediest of the three I imagine.

Silmo, that’s a great idea for our next party. We will do some seeking out of small, deserving charity.

Woefully so. Unfortunately, it has a cuteness factor of zero, and so it will most likely remain so. Maybe I could get a baby harp seal to live there or something…

/big eyes = big bucks, charity wise

Question mark. Are these monies going to go directly to the coffers of the Charlottesville branches of these groups?

Computers4Kids is the only non-national organization up for the vote. Founded in 1999 by concerned Charlottesville community members, Computers4Kids provides low income youth in Charlottesville and Albemarle County with computer skills training, one-on-one mentoring, technology workshops, and after-school computer labs. Students enrolled in the program may also earn a home computer system and a year of internet access, in addition to computer maintenance and repairs. All of Computers4Kids’ services and programming are provided to students free of charge. The goal of the organization is to provide local kids with the skills and support they need to enjoy brighter futures.

can party-goers write-in candidates who got kicked off in the first round? cause i wonder how many of these 1145 people who voted for the finalists are actually going to come to the party.

@17 a good place to start teaching the kids would be to cut out the text-messaging shorthand, e.g., by calling yourselves computers FOR kids.

@24 orchid — I’m sorry that your favorite charity got left out, but please don’t take out your sour grapes on c4k (now that’s how you’d type it in a text message). They put a lot of energy and creativity into helping the kids, and a slightly cute name is not going to detract from that. They also have a dedicated group of mentors (myself included) who work with the students every week, trying to figure out how to relate to a teenager from an at-risk background — at least enough to teach him a few computer skills, and most importantly to be a role model as a responsible adult.

All that said, there are many other worthy causes. Write-ins at the party sound like a good idea. I’d be going to the party too if it wasn’t memorial day weekend. Hope there’s another one soon.

Thanks for everyone who voted for Charlottesville/Albemarle Relay for Life! Anyone looking for entertainment this weekend, head over to the Park behind the JAG and Law Schools, where the Relay will be going on. Food, Fun, and Entertainment for all! Opening ceremonies are at noon, Relay lasts until 8am Sunday morning. Hope to see you all there!

@26 Thanks, orchid! You villains are awesome. I’ll try to be less defensive and trust more in the good of the community. But, if anybody needs a favorite charity, I think Computers 4 Kids is a pretty good one.
