I wheelie want a bike. I’m gearing up to pedal my wares so I can afford one. I need a brake from all this walking. I spoke with a friend about this during his shift at the bar. I can handle bars.

    Pun.

Seriously, if you ride on the street, you should wear a helmet. I got hit by a car twice last year. And they’re giving away free helmets. no excuses.

Wow. Twice?! How unlucky are you. I recommend you avoid walking under ladders, lightning storms, and black cats.

Gobbler, are you short enough to walk under a black cat?

3: I don’t think that’s being unlucky. I’ve been run off the road twice (i.e., tumbling into ditches and/or onto sidewalks) by inattentive drivers. Happens a lot in this town.

Where were you guys riding that you got into trouble with car drivers? Long rides, in town, day or night? This is the start of a genuinely interesting thread…

I think it’s great that lots of folks ride bikes, but the roads around here make it incredibly dangerous for the cyclist. I am extra careful when driving, but several times I have come close to hitting cyclists through no fault of anyone’s except the narrow streets and roads. You people who regularly ride are a brave bunch.

Once on Main Street in “midtown”; once on Rose Hill Drive.

I once watched a guy riding a bike crash into the back of a parked car. We all stood there in shock until he got up and started walking away. Then about 30 of us broke out in laughter simultaneously.

Echo, that was me. Other inanimate victims: a curb, and a person.

persons are inanimate? was the person already dead?

Stanley, I ride that way a lot and even though I haven’t had any trouble, I’m not a fan of the West Main bike lane right next to parallel parked cars. If it’s not trafficy, I’ll ride in the street just to avoid potential door incidents.

That said, there are maybe 5 towns in this nation that are cool to cyclists, Charlottesville still seems to be on a higher level than most places, even if it’s not perfect.

Those and cars turning right across the bike lane right in front of me = my two biggest biking fears.

in miami cars use bike lanes as sneak-past-everyone-else lanes. i can’t believe anyone bikes there.

yeah i really don’t like riding my bike anywhere but on trails. people just don’t see you.

a few years ago i saw a girl pass a biker and then immediately turn right into a gas station, directly across his path. he of course went sailing across the hood of her car and landed on his face in the parking lot. she had no idea what had happened. neither did he, really. it was pretty ugly.

Parlie, that’s almost exactly what happened to me last year, except the person turned left across traffic and ran into me. I flipped over my bike and landed on the pavement in front of the car. I remember looking up at the grill of the car thinking “oh God”. So, I jumped up as fast as I could and stumbled back onto the pavement behind me just as the car jerked forward, cause he hadn’t put it in park yet. This all happened in front of the ghetto food mart on 5th.

The second time I didn’t really get hit, but I almost died. I’ll just say a brave bush gave up it’s life to save mine.

So, after all that I went right out and bought a helmet.

Always assume the cars can see you perfectly, and are trying to kill you.
