Scottish Style Malt Whisky Distiller Coming to Nelson County

whiskey, virginia, eades, nelson

The Virginia Distillery Company has a dream, to build the first authentic Scottish made distillery amongst the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains and create an amazing range of Single Malt whiskies for America…

…. Or so says the front page of Eades Whisky, the new brand behind the planned Nelson County $5 million dollar distillery.  This sounds sweet!

Unfortunately, Eades cannot call their Whisky “scotch” because it breaks two laws of the Scotch Whisky Order of 1990 which explain that the whisky must be aged for at least three years in Scotland and must be distilled by a Scottish distillery.  Nonetheless, this should be a welcome addition to the “getting out of Charlottesville” road trip and we look forward to checking it out.

Does anyone have more information?

I met this guy a few months ago with Marty McFlarb while I was slinging juice at my Nelson county winery escape. The guy was super nice and he let me try 4 or 5 of their Scotch (Scotches? Scotchi?). Very very nice. He was very knowledgeable about them, and gave me a nice description of what I should be tasting, the intensity of the burn, and the ingredients. I was most impressed.

I know the Presidnt of VDC personally as a long-term friend who’s had this dream for quite some time. He gave me a sample bottle for tasting. The bottle was GREAT!!! I wound up buying a case to share and drink with friends. The sad part is that it is so good and smooth, that when a couple of buddies show up at noon, and you offer them a taste (with a couple of fine stogies) wel… before you know — the bottle is almost empty! This will be a GREAT addition to the region and well worth a visit when the operatoion is in full swing. And an earlier poster is correct, the prez of VDC is extremely affable and knowledgeable about whiskey and distillation process (and fine wines too!). He’s truly found his calling with a great product and business plan.

Hi, just saw the blog and wanted to contribute. My name is Chris Allwood and I am the guy who tasted the whiskies with Tuffee (at Veritas Winery I think!). There is a misnomer about the ‘Scotch’ thing, we make Eades Double Malts with Jim McEwan from Bruichladdich on Islay in 3 expressions - Highland, Speyside and Islay. The are non-chill filtered, 46% ABV and Scottish; they have also just won 2 Gold Medals and a Silver respectively on a blind tasting by the Beverage Tasting Institute of America.

When the distillery turns on (hopefully on New Year’s Eve this year), we will be making American Single Malt - we are crying out for a generic name for American Single Malt (Usky perhaps), any good ideas?

Also, reading your blog contributions, I know that i made the right decision to sell the family silver and move from the UK to America for this dream. I am truly looking forward to meeting and chatting whisky with you. If you’d like to get in touch, my email is on our website at eadeswhisky.com.

    Slainte,
    Chris

    Chris,
I’m just wondering if we’re going to be invited to the “Opening Gala” at the distillery… surely there’s going to be a celebration and we’re still free for NYE!

Ha, ha, ha, I go to the UK to check out some distilleries and look at the blog in my absence. I am impressed and amused at the imagination applied to a potential ‘generic’ name for American Malt Whisky. It also appears that some ladies have applied their imagination to my name (the answer Floozy is, whenever I can!), ho hum ….

Any more ideas on a ‘generic’ name for American Malt Whisky would be most welcome, I must think of a prize! I will also be seriously coinsidering a celebration of some sorts as soon as we know the opening date.

    Please keep em comin’

I got to taste this local-made whisky called Wusmund’s the other day and it was really good. Made in Sperryville by some guy and his mom and one employee. They do tours everyday at 4? It’s the only whisky in the country made with locally fermented hops I think is what the owner said. They also cut open the barrel and dump in some toasted applewood chips while its fermenting, so it’s got a nice infused flavor of oak and vanilla. I and some other chick who got to taste it said, “I’m a girl so I don’t drink scotch, but I could drink this!”
Their website is http://www.copperfox.biz and this will make great X-mas presents for the gentlemen in your family.

I got tired of the lame lemon and guava vodkas and the gin with hyacinths and Teletubby flavors that they serve in all the nice bars in this town, and all the fake martinis. Holly GoLightly had it right. Bowman’s calls itself The Gin of Virgina. It is great, local, and is more English because it’s real and tastes like kerosene not grandma’s potpourri pot. Is this new place connected to Bowman’s? I hope they don’t mix in Carter Mountain Apples or Jefferson’s cremation ashes or something to give it a tourist twist.
