Hello everyone. We were thinking over in the Spicy Bear offices that things were getting pretty exciting. Between the launch of cvilleStyle, a lot growth over at cvilleMUSE, and of course cVillain’s notorious presence, we wanted to thank everyone for reading. We hope that our little idea can grow into something much more exciting and interesting.
As always, you steer this ship as much as anyone else, so feel free to criticize, tell us what we can do better and just yell at us if you want. As a thank you for everything, we are going to be taking a bunch of pictures of Charlottesville in the future. Our idea is to capture as much stuff as we can and then tag, geo-tag and describe it for you to enjoy and use. We want to have pictures of every restaurant, shop and venue in this town and let you use them how you see fit. If you want us to come by your place, drop us a line.
Unlike the vast majority (~95%) of pictures of Charlottesville , you can use the Spicy Bear pictures for commercial use with the Creative Commons 2.0 license. That means you can make money off them, sell them, use them in your artwork, and pretty much do whatever you want with them. We aren’t the greatest photographers, but we wanted to share our stuff with you. We only ask that you mention where you found the original artwork.
To access our pictures, go to our Flickr page. Here is a slideshow preview in case you wanted to see some of the stuff we’ve done already.

reminds me of my recent pipe dream of reconstructing the downtown mall- in SecondLife! how meta would that be? sitting at a cafe on the mall with your laptop, cruising a virtual version of where you actually are…
it would require a lot of the same kind of work you’re describing, and probably a small army of computer geeks…
NERD ALERT
This is a cool idea - a quick thought though…
Just to be clear, are you implying that Spicy Bear is of the opinion that all photos should be free of any copyrights?
I’m not saying that’s your stance, but just want to say that it’s OK to not let everybody have free reign of an artist’s work. Many people make a living this way.
( © 2008 cVillain, All Rights Reserved )
( i know that’s not what you said or what you think at all, but just felt like it should be said that some copyrights are OK )
SILENCE! I WILL NOT TOLERATE YOUR INSOLENCE!
Tom, totally not. I think copyrights are good for protecting ideas and people’s creativity. We aren’t artists and our pictures are supposed to be an information source for other people to use.
We want people to use our images for blogs, promotional stuff, etc. A lot of stuff needs to be copyrighted because it would be really hard to make a living if you couldn’t.
It’s also hard to make a living when people offer a free product, while possibly inferior, competes with a product you make and sell. Ah, the internet… the good news is that eventually it’ll put everyone out of work and then we’ll have tons of time to blog all day!
@7 IMHO That’s no reason not to offer something for free. If your product is worth buying, people will buy it. If you think you need to eliminate competition (e.g. amateur photogs), then maybe you need a more compelling product. Forcing people to not have choice so the only option is to pay you doesn’t sound like anything I could be proud of. I know it’s hard for photographers, but I think the the good ones make their living on the quality of their work, not the lack of competition.
Back on the original topic — Pig Roast in Charlottesville? When and where was this? Looks like an awesome time. How did I sleep through this one?
@8 http://www.eatapig.com/
Next year (which will be the 10th annual pig roast) we’ll have to make sure to publicize on cvillian.
@8: you’re totally right, it’s not a reason not to offer something for free. It’s just an added factor in a crappy market for all sorts of creative professionals. It’s the new media. We must all adjust!
Awesome pics from the Pig Roast. Somebody has a crush on my roomie, seeing as there are like, 10 pictures of her.
What, no pics of me melting your face with my bocce skills, D/R boyz?
@11 so that’s the famous sdigga, she’s cute. The pig roast looked fun. I thought it was going to rain and got roped into a road trip- still recovering.
nope, wasn’t sdigga - the pictured roomie is a non-villain
So Shen lives with hammock girl and sdigga- are they Charlie’s-ville Angels?
Can I apply for Bosley’s job?
Can I apply for Bosley’s job?
Remember: no matter how hot she is, somebody, somewhere is sick of her shit. Not to disparage those referenced here, just a bit of general advice.
/chasing hotness is a fool’s game. but by all means, enjoy…
@15: Yes, but we already have a Bosley. A Bosley that sells oriental rugs and talks to his rat. Shit, we need a new Bosley.
@16: Bitter alert. Dang.
More like drunk alert if i remember correctly, but yeah, probably a touch of bitterness too. Hee hee… life is trippy.
/i really suck at the internets lately.
It’s the gin. Blame the gin.
my pig roast experience was… it wasn’t anything like those pictures.
I thunked Jay was your Bosley.
@20:Did you break your back at the pig roast??
@21: Oh yeah. Maybe he is. He needs to buy us matching outfits then.
and guns
(btw, I’m Charlie - but I text instead of using a speakerphone)
No guns. Guns are bad.
