We all knew it was getting hotter, and now it is official, courtesy of the city folks:

Additional Information
CHARLOTTESVILLE – In response to the dangerous heat that is expected later this week and probable later this summer, the City of Charlottesville reminds residents that air conditioned park’s facilities can be utilized if they have no access to air conditioning during the heat wave. Carver, Tonsler and Key Centers can be accessed during normal business hours and also as a reminder, City Pools open for the summer season beginning June 5th.
The City is also providing the following list of heat tips to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke and other serious health conditions brought on by the hot weather:
The best defense is prevention. Here are some prevention tips:
- Drink more fluids (nonalcoholic), regardless of your activity level. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask him how much you should drink while the weather is hot.
- Don’t drink liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar–these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.
- Stay indoors and, if at all possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home does not have air conditioning, go to the shopping mall or public library–even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat.
- Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Taking a cool shower or bath, or moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
- NEVER leave anyone or any pet in a closed, parked vehicle.
- Although any one at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. Check regularly on:
- Infants and young children , people aged 65 or older, people who have a mental illness, and those who are physically ill, especially with heart disease or high blood pressure
- Visit adults at risk at least twice a day and closely watch them for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Infants and young children, of course, need much more frequent watching.
If you must be out in the heat:
- Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
- Cut down on exercise. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat. Warning: If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage. Remember the warning in the first “tip” (above), too.
- Try to rest often in shady areas.
- Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (also keeps you cooler) and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective products say “broad spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” on their labels).

Great. I’m supposed to play golf at Farmington on Sunday.
wow. playing flag football mid afternoon on Sunday is going to be awesome :/
1: That’s okay, echo. Golf is for wankers.
No, no, no Stanley. I place golf behind skiing and ahead of drinking on the list of things I’d rather be doing instead of working.
I thought golf was only an excuse to drink and drive a little cart around with virtually no chance of hitting a tree.
man…riding home ensconced in black leather is going to SUCK. i guess that’s the tradeoff for better gas mileage.
So, echo, it’s skiing–>golf–>drinking–>work? I’m not sure I follow your set-up there.
(Also: I just checked the weather for NC, where I will be all weekend: 98°, 101°, 102°. Damn.)
@7: No work doesn’t make the list of things I’d rather be doing then working.
It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity.
i don’t know, smiley, i think it’s the combination of the two!
8: Thanks, logic-man. I was seeking clarification on #4, but, you know, snark is probably more helpful.
/golf is for wankers.
in my experience, golf is for SHANkers, but i guess that’s just how i swing.
how many people will pass out playing kickball on Sunday? I bet our team has at least two.
my god, people are playing sports in this weather?!
yeaaaah.. bring lots of water.
I’m would def not play this summer if this is how it’s gonna be.
Last summer was fine.. 80s-90s, but nothing like 100s or anything. Considering we’re going to be setting temperature records (by a good 10 degrees on Sunday), I think it’s fairly safe to say this isn’t the norm.
@9…………….nah…….its the heat
I so can’t give up kickball. Damn the heat!
@18
i don’t know, sitting on 29, surrounded by idling cars at a stoplight, hot engine idling between your legs, heat shimmer coming off the macadam, the heat’s bad, but the humidity makes it awful hard to breathe. the combo is the worst.
@20……A vivid picture, glad I moved back into the city a few years ago. I don’t miss the 29 traffic at all.
@21…yeah, the “evening rush hour” is one of the weirdest phenomenons i’ve experienced in C’ville. it’s like cars appear out of nowhere and all start up 29 at exactly the same moment. at least i have other options, that generally move a little more quickly.
I plan to buy one of those cheap (under $20) inflatable kiddie pools and sit in it all weekend. And just to appease you green-ies, I’ll even use the inevitably bathwater like contents to water my veggie garden so as not to incur the wrath of the drought gods (and ensure I am flush with tomatoes in a month or so).
My yankee family would be so horrified at the thought of their little prep school girl basting her pregnant belly in a kiddie pool (from Walmart no less) in an ill-fitting bikini in full redneck glory, but at least my backyard has a tall privacy fence (and I’ll try to avoid any and all classic rock stations on the radio).
If only I could have a beer. sigh.
and I’ll try to avoid any and all classic rock stations on the radio
Nonsense. Listening to classic rock would be perfectly acceptable.
/FREEBIRD!!!
just don’t forget to stand up during Freebird. it is the redneck national anthem, after all.
@23: Mrs Nut was in the same boat, Lys, just just started drinking again like a week ago. it was about 10 months dry for her.
@23: That’s not redneck, that’s creative. Pick one up for me!
Wingnut, how far north is your commute? Take 20 North to Proffit Rd and it’ll get you as far as the airport without lights, shouldn’t be any stop-and-go from there. You’ll cover an extra couple of miles, but at plus or minus 40 mpgs, who cares. You can keep moving/cool and have a scenic ride. If you’re going as far as Ruckersville you could even take 20 to 33, but thats a little bit further out of the way.
Someone needs to do a post about motorcycling around here, and it looks like its either you or me…
@27: If you’re not going as far as the Airport, take 20 North to Polo Grounds. It’ll put you on 29 at the stop light just south of where it narrows to 2 lanes and the speed limit jumps to 55.
doof,
i usually take 20 to Proffitt when i’m on the bike anyway, because i LOVE carving those turns. i wish the advance mills bridge would get finished, because that takes me all the way to my house without ever getting on 29, which is even better.
i work with a guy that rides and lives just up the road from me, and sometimes we take 20 all the way to 33 and cut back to 29 on 607 (comes out by the Sheetz). there are lots of ways back to my area (Fray’s Mill) from that side of town, but the road surfaces aren’t all very good (Burnley Station/Watt’s Passage are both nice rides but VERY bumpy).
the problem with Proffitt, sometimes, is getting stuck behind someone who goes 25 the whole time. yesterday i was stuck behind a tractor that had been mowing the verges from the railroad bridge all the way back to 29. that was miserable.
ahhhh….sitting in kiddie pool now, thanks lys. My two year old needs to shove over!
/buy kiddie pool from anywhere BUT walmart.
@28
unfortunately, echo, after the 250/hydraulic/29 mess, that part of 29 is the worst part of my commute home! polo grounds is another nice riding road, however, and i sometimes jump off 29 there and pick up Proffitt back to 29.
Thats what your power/weight ratio is for!
I know the Advance Mills bridge is closed, and they put a concrete barrier in front of it and all, but is there no way around that and over it for someone on two wheels? An extra couple-a-hundred pounds isn’t exactly gonna bring it down now, is it? Seems stupid not to let folks walk/bike over it just because it can’t handle big truck anymore
@30: Be careful. Don’t get your laptop wet.
@32/33, there are very few places on Proffitt i’d really be comfortable passing, even on the bike. it wasn’t just the tractor holding me up yesterday, and i was in my truck.
they have completely closed off the bridge with concrete k-wall, signs, guardrail, cows, brambles, landmines and concertina wire. seriously. it’s like trying to cross the Magineux line (sp?).
I was going to smoke some ribs this weekend for the first time, but the possibility of my spontaneous combustion with this weather is just too great.
It is definitely too hot to eat hot food.
i respectfullly disagree, Shen, the hot food (spicy hot) helps keep you cool (just ask the chile loving peoples of the American Southwest and Central America!).
i do, however, agree that standing next to a grill or smoker this weekend is the last thing i want to be caught dead doing. i’m thinking more of a slow burn than spontaneous combustion though.
Um, I call bullshit on that one.
Magineux line (sp?)
Maginiot Line.
try it…eat some hot peppers on a hot day, they make you sweat, which is your body’s cooling mechanism.
it’s great if you like spicy food, if you don’t, not so much.
thanks Stanley!
@41: Actually, I hate sweating. Ew
i don’t blame you. it’s one of the reasons i’m dreading going home this afternoon. i’m working up the CBA right now. Massive amount of sweating vs. leaving work, riding the motorcycle and starting the drinking.
so far leaving work is winning
Maginiot Line.
“Maginot”
/just sayin’
thanks Oy, i didn’t look closely at Stanley’s response.
@ 38 Im with wingnut on this one. Pluck a jalapeno right off the vine, chomp it up and let the cooling begin. I think it may just be perceived cooling, but it really does feel good.
especially when washed down with about 32 oz of margarita. mmmm…’rita….
Now we’re talking!
this is going to be a good weekend for margaritas…advice on the best in town? anyone?
i like the ones at my house, but i don’t think i can host the Villains…
as much as i hate to say it, the Presidente Margarita at Chili’s is pretty tasty.
Ventana!
I like margaritas, but without all those pesky mixers, salt or lime.
Byo is a minimalist. i like that. now i know what to get you for christmas!
how is Ventana? i need to try it for lunch. did i miss the review?
@52: Haven’t had the food. But Michael’s make awesome margaritas with quality ingredients and puts a sea slat foam on it. Yum!
salt
i’m off to brave the excessive heat and get my drink on. hope all the villains have a great weekend!
@55 i was kind of repulsed by the margarita i had at ventana, which surprised me, as 1) i am not that picky, & 2) it was on a friday. sea salt foam is weird!
I from Alabama, and was a life guard for 3 summer. This weather is nothing. I plan on enjoying it with cheap beer, cheap friends, and the cheap baby pool i bought last week. Bottoms up!
jeez, just came back from the farmers market….we must all commend the vendors for roughing it out all day, its flipping hot today! STAY INDOORS….unless you have another pig roast to go to!
@59 B-WILK, having spent the wrong 10 months living in Montgomery, i concur on the Alabama heat making us Villains look like pussies, but this is extraordinarily hot for this area, and we’re a bunch of pampered folks who are used to our A/C…give us a break!
we’re having a heat wave in SF too. it’s getting up to 73 this week! yikes!
@61 Wingnut, Gross, I hate Montgomery. That place is a shit hole. But then again, I’m not to fond of the state in general. 24 years was all I could take. I only visit for X-mas now.
@45, 46: Wow. That’s embarrassing. And funny. My B!
This weather is really kicking my butt. Driving around without AC is not advisable.
i just spent two and a half hours replacing the cooling system in my “new” commuter car, a free 92 camry. needless to say, another shower was in order, even with the temperature having dropped to a relatively mild 90 degrees.
[…] like another wicked summer heat-wave day is headed our way. To convince you further, here is a follow up heat wave message from our “City of […]
