This is the weekend to be hip, why? We have music, dancing, plays, bike rides and more. BTW Lu Sid sent in a lot of these, be sure to buy Lu Sid a drink tonight. Follow the rabbit hole:
- the X Lounge is having their “Xpansions” monthly dance experience Saturday night. DJ Lemoor will supposedly entertain all of you. Lemoor if you are listening, cVillains strongly advise if people make non-house recommendations to NOT play house remixes of old sings, mix it up!;

- Le Comptoir Zinc is now open on Sundays beginning this coming weekend. Also, they will begin airing the Europe 2008 Soccer Championships starting this Saturday;
- Nels Cline Singers at the Paramount on Friday;
- Fridays After Five: The original Charlottesville Allstars;
- Envy Dance Party at Wild Wings Cafe on Friday night;
- Blues Jam @ the Gravity Lounge on Friday;
- Midsummer Night’s Dream as part of the Virginia Renaissance Faire in Spotslyvania on Saturday;
- National MS Society Tour De Vine Ride 2008 on Saturday
- Clay workshop at Sun’s Traces Gallery on Saturday and Sunday

Market Street and Crush wine tastings tonight.

What’s all this then? I, personally, didn’t strongly advise shit. But I will now: Lemoor, if you are listening, play what your feeling and ignore this grammatically cryptic nugget of lunacy.
*you’re* oof. bad timing on that typo eh? lordy.
I would have the same reaction had I not been at the Space Party…it was like being at a rave all night, and everyone was talking about how they wanted to hear non-house music. DJ’s play to the crowd b’yo not to themselves.
RUH ROOO.. DJ debate!
Oh jeez… 4,000 people in town for reunion weekend!

/where do we crash their party?
I guess just follow the line of drunk alums?
I don’t know who ended up playing the space party, and I wasn’t there, so I can’t comment on that. And I would whole heartedly agree with you about “playing to the crowd” if the dj was playing for a wedding of a frat party or something. But you do understand that the x-lounge expects the dj to play house music, don’t you? And they actually have asked me specifically not to play certain types of music. Would you go to the Prism and request some NWA? Why not? You are, after all, “the crowd” no? Venues have genres, its that simple. There are worlds of variation within those genres if you open up your mind a bit, but if you would rather listen to the exact same original versions of songs that are on your iPod, I won’t be able to convince you of anything.
Do I need to cut and paste the entire debate from a few months back between Yo, UVA LaGrape and myself?
I love house music, don’t get me wrong, but you can successfuly spin house and intermix with dance fav’s too and keep the energy going…trick people onto the dance floor and then house it up. Its all about transitions ya?
Yes, XSV, I think you do. I couldn’t find it.
And good to see you on here by the way…
@9, 12: I think this is what you were looking for.
2oh4’s DJing at OXO and she will not be playing any hip hop or pop crap.
and she will not be playing any hip hop or pop crap
But what if “the crowd” demands it? How oh how will she “trick” people onto the dance floor?
/snark
Hoooray for Zinc showing the European Soccer Tournament!!!
beats the hell out of Wild Wings, for sure!!
@15: We told her to ignore them. The cool people will stay, the people who wanna hear crappy music can leave.
Trees on Fire tonight at IX Building for the opening of the new place there…NO ALCOHOL BEING SERVED as ABC has left the owner high and very dry for the time being. Trees said they will probably play around 7-ish or so, depending on the size of the crowd. Sounds like plenty of food and fun.
@19: NO BOOZE? No way.
@16: word. I’m gonna try to hit that up sometime soon.
@19 Wow. I wanted to go to that so bad–no that you mention there is no alcohol I am a little less sad I can’t make it.
@6 on Friday, I’d try to crash the 9:30 Band Party with SGGL. I’m assuming that will be under the tent in front of the new Special Collections Library. On Saturday, crash the lawn events at 9:30, culminating with the fireworks and pick your version of the party at 10pm - Voltage Brothers (South Lawn, not the South Lawn Project) or Breakfast Club (80s tribute band! Special Collections library). Wear your best orange and blue and try to find name tags!
@20 I understand Shen, believe me. My hip does not relly fit into that kind of socket. Just spreading the Trees love if anyone who, say, has been drinking since noon and wants a wee break for some tunes and grindage, might want to float over to. But a bar without drinks…the horror.
@22 They will surely play again and we will surely be there. Have fun being so damn nice and responsible. You rock, rock.
/I split the infinitive
Still no alcohol? That is ridiculous. Oh, and don’t even try to bring your own. They frown on that.
Go check out MUSE for weekend music and art stuff!
Anyone know who is having the Euro 2008 Cup (soccer) on this weekend? Anyone bars running any specials? Where is the place to go watch?
@28: Let me direct you to the top of this very post.
“Le Comptoir Zinc is now open on Sundays beginning this coming weekend. Also, they will begin airing the Europe 2008 Soccer Championships starting this Saturday”
Anybody going to First Fridays???
@4 i realize i’m about 6 hours too late for this conversation, but: i wouldn’t have a problem with house music all night if it weren’t the same five songs repeated over & over again, like the dj at the space party played. it’s like he forgot his cds & had to use the ones over the visor of his car.
i have to go with orchid on this one, and expand a bit on house dj’s/venues:
there is significant range, even within the house genre. especially when playing in a more commercial venue, it’s a good idea to represent some of that range in dj set. that being said, as belmont yo pointed out, certain venues have certain styles. if i go to a pop/hip hop venue and ask for some house (beyond 3 or 4 “hits” or some remixes of some poppy stuff), i won’t get any traction with that dj’s, so why should a person at a house venue expect to get much traction asking for pop/hip hop?
my understanding of what x lounge is going after is more of an urban club feel. my experience with house clubs in these environments has generally been that, while there may be some variety in the early parts of the night, once the house get going, that’s what you are going to get for the rest of the night.
lemoore has a significant amount of experience doing “urban nights” in relatively non-urban/college environments (around the raleigh, durham, chapel hill area) and has good range. unless you just HAVE to have the same songs you hear all the time most everywhere else, i expect that lemoore and i can get you moving.
@ 15, Sweetheart Yo; the trick is to starve their ears for an hour, then they will dance to whatever you play. The No Hip Hop went over quite nicely considering the very dancing Live Arts Crowd.
