Updates on Boheme and OXO Rumors

We just got more secrets from another birdie which totally contradicted our prior set of rumors/news on OXO and Boheme.  Who knows if they are true or not, but they come from a very reliable source. So, what is going on at OXO and Boheme?!  Details after the break…

OXO - Looks like we got the “sold” part wrong.  Instead the $7,000+ monthly rent wasn’t getting covered and the current owner of the building is looking for something to take Oxo’s place.  We don’t know details on the deal, but it was a very expensive lease and it would be hard to turn enough cash to make this location work.  Given the commentary and lack of gossip about what’s coming next (and even one from its prior owner, Alice), this makes sense.  Given no new owner has popped up, it will probably be a while until we see something replace OXO.

Boheme - While we mentioned that Boheme would be some sort of high end Italian place, it looks like nothing was inked and that deal has fallen through.  There are apparanlty 3 to 4 bidders of well-known local restaurants trying to get this space, but no word on what it will be or when it closes.

Remember, rumors should be taken with a grain of sea salt.

F&B rule of thumb. You need to bag your rent in two days sales or your toast. The place was a high end mex joint with Maryland owners that traveled daily before John and an even worse empty burnt warehouse with a parking lot filled with portapotties to handle the FA5 crowd before that.

John almost took over the old Pockets space, and did wonders with what he had. From kicking out breakfast at Keswick Hall to what he did, for so long is pretty amazing.

I could drink his reductions out of a bowl and be happy. To bag them as clear and silky as he did was pretty kicking.

In terms of OXO, how does the sale of the restaurant and all it’s contents (according to the Hook) square with the sale of the business? What I mean is if it’s still going to be a food establishment won’t the new owner keep some of the old stuff?

With the limited amount of information presented it looks more like a real estate deal the the sale of a going concern.

@8, it doesn’t. It sounds like this is a settlement (bankruptcy) auction, so they will pay the creditors as much as they can out of the proceeds.

@9: Wrong wrong wrongity wrong. It was sold to someone out of town. Who’s auctioning it off. And it wasn’t bankruptcy. They would never do that to their vendors.

@11, I have no idea, but why would you buy something and auction it immediately?

my guess is there is no buyer for oxo. best wishes to John and Alice, they are true professionals.

landlord can make some dough selling the equipment. then lease to a new tenant who will upfit the space all over again. then said tenant may fail, as they often do, which would make the landlord even more money, continuing the cycle.

shenanigans can feel free to call me an idiot and that there is a buyer, i’m just guessing.

  52. 03 Jul 2008 at 1:53 amKyle said:

Actually it brought in nothing. The winning bid was the landlord’s, he was only going to sell if it went above a much higher price

  53. 03 Jul 2008 at 7:53 amk bear said:

The kitchen equipment was bought by the landlord as CvilleGourmand said for $3000. This looks like a classic paying off of debt move. According to the Hook the landlord would have gone much higher. Capshaw’s group bid $2000 but in the article it’s say that bid wasn’t for the group. It was for the handyman so he could fix up and resale the stuff.
“The list included thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment– four gas stoves, refrigerators, an espresso machine, two computers, cash registers, cooking equipment, stereos, and nearly 140 pieces of furniture, to name just a few of the items.” There was no mention of cheese
