Free Lightbulbs

CFL

In an effort to reduce carbon emissions, Albemarle County is giving away free compact florescent lightbulbs.  For free.  As in, if you’re a cVillain by heart, but not home, and live in that dreaded County of Albemarle, you can go pick up a free bulb at the county office building.

First come, first lit.  Get on it.

Quick, jump in your car which is filled with $4/gallon fuel and drive over to the Albemarle County Office Building to get one free lightbulb.

@5: Free doesn’t always mean free. I was trying to reinforce the point.

But i don’t know how much longer this is taking place. I submitted this early Tuesday, but it was not posted until last night. So they might already be out. Who knows?

These compact florescent bulbs are great!!! . . . until you realize that they are full of mercury and pollute the air and groundwater when discarded.

    /no free lunches

@8……. I’d rather have free hazmat removal when the damn things burn out than the bulbs for free. Bulb disposal might be the dot com of the two thousand teens.

And unless they got them for free, we’re really paying for them anyway. Our tax dollars hard at work.

Lulu: Take this object, but beware it carries a terrible curse!
    parlie: Ooooh, that’s bad.
Lulu: But it comes with a free Frogurt!
    parlie: That’s good.
Lulu: The Frogurt is also cursed.
    parlie: That’s bad.
Lulu: But you get your choice of topping!
    parlie: That’s good.
Lulu: The toppings contains Potassium Benzoate.
    parlie: [stares]
    Lulu: That’s bad.

The part about mercury is partially true, but you may want to check this fact sheet for the scoop on the mercury (Hg) output of incandescent vs. CFL over the life of the bulb.

Incandescents use more energy, thus in VA, where coal rules, more Hg is released over the life. If you recycle the CFLs (@ McIntire, for example, where it IS FREE to get rid of the hazmat – not technically hazmat, but universal waste), you help reduce the Hg impact they have. There is very little Hg in a CFL anyway. Bottom line, the CFLs are better in the long run, even if you are a bastard and crush them in the street rather than recycling.
