While being repeatedly disappointed with the late night at Cassis and X-Lounge and there being no late night at Ten yet I can’t help but feeling an ever increasing sadness about the loss of OXO. It’s been over a month now.
What other late night spots have come up since? Are people happy with Cassis, X-Lounge and the ever exciting Escafe?
I was also wondering, we all know Shenanigans has migrated to X-Lounge, the OXO door guy is now the door guy at Cassis and another all time favorite bartender has retired altogether. What happened to the other OXO bartenders and bartendresses? I keep my eyes peeled but I can’t seem to spot them anywhere.
What are cVillain’s thoughts?

I’ve been struggling recently and I’m glad you brought this up Byard.
Students are almost back in town which means that Zo Ca Lo and Ten should be getting a lot more crowded, but honestly I’ve been digging Bang just because it’s a little less crowded than most and has cuter ladies. Latenight at Mas can get pretty exciting, but I always feel out of place at Cassis.. I mean that place is R2 version 2.0.
i saw erika working somewhere downtown while on my recent bar crawl, i’m having trouble remembering where that was. rapture…?
the baby barback, spyder, torn from his exciting new career just as he was getting his feet wet, enjoys gigs at outback lodge with his band, the crueligans.
I think cassis has issues because, partly, of the bartender (hopefully you know which one I’m talking about). He is very moody, sometimes pretentious, and just not my cup of tea. However, he is moving out of cville soon, so we’ll see how cassis progresses without him. Mas is amazing! And miss melissa is the greatest waitress btw…
Since OXO closed, I have moved my late night partying to X Lounge. It’s mostly because shenanigans is there which means countless other Villians will also be there, but some nights, it just seems a bit off. I’m still trying to figure out where the old OXO crowd is going. Has it split up into multiple smaller groups with some at Cassis, some at X and others elsewhere? Who knows, I’m usually pretty drunk by the time late night comes around. Throw in a couple shots, and I’d have a good time just about anywhere.
Where is Shen by the way?
Shen is movin’ on up (movin’ on up) to the east side.
whatever happened to that rumor that ten was going to take over oxo as have a new fabulous late night thing?
I’m not one that goes out often (nowhere near echo’s 6-7 nights a week, I may do that in 3 months at most) but I did enjoy OXO while it was here. What was it that they had that others have yet to reproduce? Was it that velvet rope with the door guy that made it seem like a really cool club? Was it the dance floor that go so crowded that people couldn’t see how terrible of a dancer you were? Is there something that a place like X could do to get that “status”? I always thought it was Shen and maybe word hasn’t gotten out enough that she’s elsewhere.
@6 Shen finally got a piece of the pie!
Shen is Weezy?
After she goes for a run she is.
/thank you, be sure to tip your waitress.
thank you, be sure to tip your
waitressbartendress.Fixed that for you
Speaking of tips, I have a question…How much does everyone usually tip at a restaurant and at a bar? (Include variations for good/poor service, servers that are friends, type of restaurant, etc.) I personally have been a part time waitress at various places for several years, and in turn, i usually tip over 20% if the service is good, 20% if the service was mediocre, and RARELY less, the service has to be very bad (ex: IHOP one morning when the waitress told me and my friends that “she’d get to us in a minute, we weren’t exactly at the top of her priority list at the moment” and then brought us all the wrong food). Bar tabs, if I like the bartender and/or he or she was good, usually 20%.
I’d give Cassis a fair chance before writing it off: OXO once felt like R2 as well and it took time and adjusting to achieve what it became. Restaurants and scenes are **hopefully** always striving to improve, so constructive criticism is great.
@ 1: Thor, I love Bang as well. Not to mention that their drinks are awesome and the Bangaritas (both the drink and the lovely ladies in the waitstaff) are awesome
@13 Should have made a post! Sounds almost like a different topic. Look out, mc is coming for you!
/hiding from mc because she’s cooler than me and could demolish me in a flurry of clever phrases.
lol im not scurreeddddd…and making it a new post was a good idea, but its slightly related so hopefully people don’t get “bored to tears” (i think that was one of her phrases)
ps-Eder at Zocalo is great as well…he’s brazilian, has a pony tail (which sounds gay but he pulls it off), and he has the most amazing accent. Just an all around great server
*what is the male word for flirtresses?
I’m very afraid so I’m staying on topic! Why hasn’t anyone made fun of Blue Light yet? We’re 16 comments deep here people!
I have a friend who ventured to blue light on a sunday night and got attacked by a mob of cougars…he was very afraid as well
Well if we’re going with waiter/waitress comparison it would be flirters. And I was totally planning on growing a sweet pony but NEVERMIND!
what is the male word for flirtresses?
“chippendale”
@18: How’s this? Blue Light can eat a d. Gross place. I’m aiming to never step foot in that place.
Someone here turned me on to a killer blog the other day, but after having read it, it is exactly how I picture the inner workings of Blue Light.
^ link doesn’t work
Your mom’s house.
Bah, bad link - here, this works.
going to uva, I see that kind of thing quite frequent, except, while the girls are hot, 90% are bitches. so its hot bitchy girls with douchebags (quite a fitting pairing actually)
@19 Mauled by cougars at Bluelight- what’s a bit of testosterone laden catnip to do?
Thanks for all the responses. I was hoping to get more information about the whereabouts of the former OXO staff because there were more people that made it happen than just Shenanigans, but maybe that’s just me.
@ 8 and 4 I think the cool thing about OXO was that you had a very diverse crowd that always gave you the feeling of being at the only “in” place on town. My partner and I always felt special and recognized by staff and guests but you didn’t have to socialize if you didn’t feel like it. There were of yourse plenty of downsides (bathrooms, crowded dancefloor, ADD DJs, prices) but somehow the love that went into the project by the owners and staff made it special. For more praise, see the ancient OXO obituary post in the cVillain archives.
@ the rest: All the other suggestions are great but I feel most of them lack the dancing element as well as a chance to safely check out people other than the bartenders/bartendresses.
X-Lounge…I am sorry but sound system as well as the too bright lighting of the dancefloor make it impossible to get in the mood. There are always one or two people awkwardly dancing but not OXO type crowds.
That said, I have increasingly become a fan of ZINC. They had a couple of concerts there and I believe they could start a dance night there too.
Tuffster, is it actually moving day?
I miss OXO so very much. X-Lounge is a poor substitute, I have never really cared for Zo Ca Lo, and I really think the Zinc scene is lacking. There is always Blue Light, but that gets old FAST. I say cvillains devise a new location and make it happen. I can so see birdies at Bang or anywhere else.
and the ever exciting Escafe?
Is this sarcasm? As I understand it, the GM at snatch will be adding a disco ball, fog machine, strobe and some other elements for the dance party there very shortly. I will believe it when I see it, but its at least being kicked around. It would make a HUGE difference.
And out of curiosity, what would improve the sound system at X? What is an ADD DJ?
@31: Attention Deficit Disorder DJ
the ADD DJ was the one who would change the track every 15 seconds.
i mentioned it here and was told it was his ‘thing’, or some kind of style, but i think it blows.
I said it before, I hope I don’t have to say it again: leave ten the HELL alone. It’s perfect.
Hearing the door tool from OXO is there is enough to stay away from Cassis.
Ahhh. I have been on “dj fail mode” extensively lately, so forgive me if I sympathize with the other team.
/gently strokes his seven to ten minute tracks, (although I understand its the width, not the length).
The sound syatem at X is incredible; the problem is the levels appear to be set the same throughout. What may be a good level for the dance floor isn’t for the rest of the place. Then again I’m old.
@ 30 let’s make Zinc happen…
@ 31 No that was no sarcasm at all. I was trying to emphasize that Escafe has a longer tradition of late night than OXO and that at least I always had a great time there. But somehow it’s not what I liked about OXO. I guess we’ll find out what Escafe can do tomorrow night! At the cVillain party.
As for the sound system at X-Lounge: I believe you cannot have a sub-woofer system and suspend the sub-woofer from the ceiling. It’s an expensive system but whoever installed it did not know what they were doing. Bass travels through the ground. So the woofer needs to sit on the floor. The result is that no matter how loud the music is it never feels present and thus never makes you want to dance.
@ 33 Oh man, I hear you! That guy sucks!
@ 36: You are right, the levels are a problem too!
@1: R2 2.0? Ahahaha I love you Thor.
I kind of wish mono loco would start up a late night deal, i love that place and just seems it be would be a great place (esp. in summer time) for late night fun
Oh, ahem…um Gina moved to D.C., Sarah is working at Fleurie as a food runner but might be managing a new place opening form the chef there, Sam is at Cassis unfortunately, Catherine moved back to Rva, Kurt is pursuing a side project with myself and 2o4 which may be an Artini-like club party once a week, Ben moved to Richmond, who am I missing?
P.S. A certain very hot former server from Escafé is moving back to town and may be tending bar at Bang soon.
Wow, people actually moved away because OXO closed?
Thanks for the update Shen (now I just need to know which face goes with what name…)
Kurt is pursuing a side project with myself and 2o4 which may be an Artini-like club party once a week
Oh. Well, then. Just when you think you’re in the loop.
And that reminds me, I gotta get that stuff back from 2o4… i’m such an airhead.
@ 36 & 37 I wonder if it would help if I brought my two SP 15’s and put them on the floor right in front of the dance floor? That might create an “immediate” sound zone for the dance floor. Who knows, though.
@29 - echo. Yup. For me. Last load is going out the door now. Soon to be officially a downtowner. Downtownite? Downtownian?
/all growds up.
@ 44 You will have “Downtowns Syndrome”.
Thoughts on 216?
@43 - might be worth a try
@45. You are my hero, BYo. Clever + Inappropriate = Gold.
I e-challenge you to work that into the name of your next gig.
Gina was great, sad to see her go; but she seems happy with what she’s doing
I personally like to hang out on mall statutes, construction sites, and play grounds.
to hang out on mall statutes
Like the noise ordinance?
@42: Yep. Sad huh?
@43: You know k. She wants to be the Queen DJ.
@46 - 216 can be a blast if you go with the right crowd. Just be sure not to take beers from the cooler.
You know k. She wants to be the Queen DJ.
Enjoy the crown. I’ll be getting down with the peasants.
/sharing is caring, aaaaaand… now i know.
Ok, so here is some gossip I told parlie the other night and he was like, “Fight gossip is lame”.
Last Saturday apparently at X Lounge the chef from the Local grabbed a waiter from Mono Loco and bashed his head into a window outside. The window is still all busted if you don’t believe me. And as of Wednesday I heard the chef was still in jail. Anybody know what happened or see it go down?
…aaaaand now Im in a really really shitty mood. thanks guys.
fuck charlottesville. i wanna be cali,yo again.
I’ve heard that stealing beers from coolers is bad, I’ve made a personal note not to attempt it in the future. I personally love 216, when I actually remember the next morning…
@37 thanks for supporting zinc, we’d love to increase the “scene” on the week-end but people need to walk two blocks to do so.Think about it from cassis it’s just about the same walking distance to come to zinc than to go to the x-lounge, anyway we got a bunch of live music coming up at the end of the month and early September for those interest or willing to take the long walk up main street.
@ 55 wow, seems like X-Lounge is trying REALLY hard to be the new place to be.
@ 52…yeah sad indeed. Just as I started to make a few acquaintances.
@ 58 well nothing beats that patio!
ya know it, I’m hopping my campaign wins us the best outdoor place to eat in the best of c’ville
This question might seem stupid and even comical, but (unfortunately) I used to work at Wild Wing Cafe. Does anyone enjoy gonig there for the rooftop patio or fri. night club envy or sat. night karoke? im going to imagine the strong concensus will be no, but I’m just curious. I’ve seen the clientel (sp?) that comes in there for club envy, and its not pretty…
@ 61 Yeah…except I am not looking for a sexy place to eat…but a sexy place to dance…
Too bad I already voted. But I voted you guys the best place to watch European Soccer.
@ 62 club ENVY? That alone sounds….terrible. maybe I am not getting the joke. I do think it’s a cool rooftop though but as you said: the crowd…not pretty. Also the 65 TVs with assorted sport … not doing it for me. I do like their wings though and the bucket of bottles of bud for a few Dollars.
@59: Not really. They’ve always kind of done their own thing. They just get attention now because I work there.
@65 it’s not just you, it’s the mini burgers and mac n’ cheese
We’re trying to make Cassis a fun place to go and dance, but it’s tough. I’ve DJed a couple of Saturdays there and all anyone wants to hear is “love in this club” and “lollipop”.
Customers can be so bitchy. Last night a group of people came in and demanded that I play Hip-Hop because “that’s what they wanted to dance to.” We had billed last night as an 80’s night but, sure, whatever. If people wanna dance to hip-hop… When I finally put on “Low” there was a little dancing, but then they all sat back down. A few songs later I switched to 80’s and people were dancing, but later these same girls came back and told me to play more hip-hop. I’m not a jukebox. Vote for the music with your bodies.
No love for the DJ.
Yes, their food is very good Deets. But the people who come to see me ain’t coming to eat. They’re coming to get their DRUNK on.
@68: Some come for the mac ‘n’ cheese; others prefer the mack ‘n’ sleaze.
@67: I’d love it if we could have a place and play no hip-hop whatsoever and if anyone harassed us for it, we could kick them out.
/a dream is a wish your heart makes
@69 .. are you saying Shen brings the sleaze?
Why do only unnattractive chicks get up on the bar?
@67 Oh I feel your pain.
I just dont understand it. But oh well.
If only there were a new joint opening up where a dj could be a dj. Oh thats right. There is. But there will be only one dj. Forever. Awesome.
/just barely warming up the pout machine…
@69 .. are you saying Shen brings the sleaze?
Nah. Just making a dumb joke on the internet.
Because the pretty one are busy getting hit on
@ 73 am I missing something? I don’t get your reference but I am dying to know.
@ 76 Never mind my ramblings. You’re not missing anything, and Im over it. Sideburns and fragile egos, the hallmarks of a dj. Heh.
/wish I could have dance parties in my yard.
I love it when any DJ plays Eric Prydz’s “Call on me”.
Can’t look it up to post because I’m at work, but do yourselves a favor and look up the video, it’s amazing! Enjoy!
did you know that one of the bartenders at mas is renting out cassis for his bday and having a ”call on me” themed bday party there…gotta love it
wouldn’t say it’s a “Call on me Birthday Party”, but there is the possibility that there will be a video of it made
are you that bartender by chance?
I love it when dj’s post the freshest unreleased remix of call on me (wideboys exclusive ibiza mix). Is that a little fedde I hear?
enjoy!
I’m just 434, baby!
that’s a good idea btw, a whole party devoted to it? costume requeired?
haha, i dont know the details, just heard the buzz
I hate Steve Winwood songs. Barf.
@85 your just jealous because Winwood is thinner than you
Was just trying to hook 434 up is all.
no good deed…
@86: Then he’s a skeleton
@88 with skin drawn tightly over it- I think he has gotten bigger after the cocaine years
Whatever.
@ 89 Oh my. You are right.
Wow, I leave for a couple hours and I miss all the fun. I’m just glad shenanigans is back. Yesterday was scary. Are you tending at all this weekend?
Tonight. Tomorrow I will be tending to my own drunkenness. Weeeee!
Excellent.
@56 that’s funny, cause all week, i’ve been like, f cali, i can’t wait to return to c’ville.
@ 95
As a rule a man’s a fool
When its hot, he wants it cool.
When its cool, he wants it hot,
always wanting what is not.
or else, things suck here & i am sick of it.
Things suck here too. No one ever has any fun, and they just turned it into a dry city. No more alcohol, no loud music. Just a bunch of old people walking slowly.
@98 Are you talking about Odie’s ex-building?
That’s just where the old people live.
OMG are they actually leaving the building now?!
They’re probably getting a head start on cougar time at Blue Light.
Yeah, they got tired of all the gangs, so they decided to take back the streets, one small, slow step at a time. The power is going their heads though. They’re even walking out on tabs without paying.
But this is very off topic. Let’s cease and desist.
Yes. Before we are tackled on the downtown mall by one of the comment monitors.
Gawd, I go get a massage and ya’ll start talking about boring shit.
Pop quiz: which restaurant in town gives you the most painful burning shits and from what dish?
Apropos of nothing I will mention that the best dish at Guad is the Carnitas. Hey at least they have a deck.
Yeah but if you mix their queso dip with the salsa, omfg it hurts later.
LOL
@106 Too much fine tequila from Continental Divide coupled with the certain peppers can make one look forward to a some quality lavatory contemplation.
What the hell did you guys do to my thread….?
Byard.. do you feel used and dirty?
/me too
I think I do…but not in a good way.
Speaking of mono loco they have a killer line up for this monday night. a bunch of bands from nashville who were booked at Saxx are playing: charlie Kind Nevada Newman and Famous Jake of the Asylum street Spankers. it whould but something to dod on an otherwise boring night of the week. as far as the chef from the local who went to jail I heared he posted bond the next morning. And I didn’t think mono loco hired male servers.?
@3: hey uva non-”dousche” if you don’t like the bartender at cassis, don’t go there. you’d be moody too if you had to deal with the riff raff that comes in there and doesn’t tip. oh, and learn to spell “douche” correctly too.
@115 that’s not the right answer, just because the crowd is rowdy doesn’t mean the bartender can be a inhospitable. I know the bartender in question and he can be surly and not given to the customer arts. He’s young and thinks he’s got it all figured out. I will admit that he is quite versed in wine knowledge for someone barely old enough to drink but that doesn’t excuse the attitude. It ain’t called the service industry for nothin’
WTF?! i just got this email:
“Cassis is going to covers because Rapture is closing and they don’t want the riffraff, but I’m on the list.”
can someone please explain?
Oh man, I’m getting déjà vu…
P.S. Cassis: playing all that hip hop brings the “riff raff” in.
Rapture is closing? I didn’t buy it. I’m still putting together my plan for a pitadartboardarcadepooltablestripclubforkids.com bar.

I have a question: can someone make a list (or is there already a list on this site) of all the places downtown and on the Corner that serve late night food betweeen 10p and 2am?
I have a question: can someone make
a list (or is there already a list on this site) of all theplaces downtown and on the Corner that serve late night food betweeen 10p and 2am that aren’t a crappy sandwich shop full of drunken louts, freshly marinated in Rugby Road’s finest vintage Natural Light?Your question was broken, so I fixed it for you.
I really don’t mind all that. I’m just tired of always eating at Wendy’s or McDonald’s because I can’t tell which of the better restaurants are open on which nights
i don’t promise this is all right because i only go to zocalo & mas, but:
fri & sat open until 1030: bang, great wall, red lantern, bashir’s; fri only: fabio’s, marco & luca’s
fri & sat open until 1045: continental divide
fri & sat open until 11: horse & hound, maya, raising cane’s, escafe, the local, asian express, china king, dragon lady, east garden, flaming wok, ming dynasty, peking, mel’s, himalayan fusion, zocalo, the flat, blue light, downtown grille; fri only: el puerto, guad; sat. only: blue moon
ten mon-thurs open till 11, fri & sat open till midnight
mas till 1, ventana till 2
late night menus: fellinis weekends till 12, escafe 11-1, rapture thurs – sat 10-1, X lounge till 1, st. maarten’s till 1, C&O, mono loco fri & sat

thank you, orchid - now i just have to print it out to remember it
/not that I EVER get to go out late…

gee, as usual, waiting for the late night comments… and am again, supremely disappointed…
does anyone know of a “night owl post”???
I feel so all alone.
You could try Fark. I think those folks are up at all hours.
Late nights here are slow, because we became a high-brow intellectual blogue. Everyone’s busy working on his or her dissertation and shit.
what the heck is fark?
/thanks you much, stanley
I’m totally up at all hours, it’s a moral failing, I know
Um, btw, are you sayin’ I’m not high-bow intellectual, etc.???? Taking offense…
I just friggin’ stay up late. That has nothing to do with how many brain cells/neurons are firing…
ok, off my soap box…
Um, btw, are you sayin’ I’m not high-bow intellectual
By all means, no. Stick around. We have boxed wine in the kitchen and a fresh box of Bugles™ in the cupboard. We also have eleventy tonnes of umbrage in storage we can pull out, and we’ll do so as needed.
already read that someone has an e-crush on the word “eleventy”. You already know I can’t bear to not hang out, but I’m thinking that if I comment too late night-ish, that somehow my comments are immediately judged to be “drunk postin’”… I’d like to say something remotely relevant from time to time, but am sensitive to ya’ll’s superior intellect… and earlier night hours
back to the question - what is fark?
Jeebus, brosef. fark.
