What’s your new late night hangout in Charlottesville?

late night charlottesville

While being repeatedly disappointed with the late night at Cassis and X-Lounge and there being no late night at Ten yet I can’t help but feeling an ever increasing sadness about the loss of OXO. It’s been over a month now.

What other late night spots have come up since? Are people happy with Cassis, X-Lounge and the ever exciting Escafe?

I was also wondering, we all know Shenanigans has migrated to X-Lounge, the OXO door guy is now the door guy at Cassis and another all time favorite bartender has retired altogether. What happened to the other OXO bartenders and bartendresses? I keep my eyes peeled but I can’t seem to spot them anywhere.

What are cVillain’s thoughts?

I’ve been struggling recently and I’m glad you brought this up Byard.

Students are almost back in town which means that Zo Ca Lo and Ten should be getting a lot more crowded, but honestly I’ve been digging Bang just because it’s a little less crowded than most and has cuter ladies. Latenight at Mas can get pretty exciting, but I always feel out of place at Cassis.. I mean that place is R2 version 2.0.

I think cassis has issues because, partly, of the bartender (hopefully you know which one I’m talking about). He is very moody, sometimes pretentious, and just not my cup of tea. However, he is moving out of cville soon, so we’ll see how cassis progresses without him. Mas is amazing! And miss melissa is the greatest waitress btw…

Since OXO closed, I have moved my late night partying to X Lounge. It’s mostly because shenanigans is there which means countless other Villians will also be there, but some nights, it just seems a bit off. I’m still trying to figure out where the old OXO crowd is going. Has it split up into multiple smaller groups with some at Cassis, some at X and others elsewhere? Who knows, I’m usually pretty drunk by the time late night comes around. Throw in a couple shots, and I’d have a good time just about anywhere.

I’m not one that goes out often (nowhere near echo’s 6-7 nights a week, I may do that in 3 months at most) but I did enjoy OXO while it was here. What was it that they had that others have yet to reproduce? Was it that velvet rope with the door guy that made it seem like a really cool club? Was it the dance floor that go so crowded that people couldn’t see how terrible of a dancer you were? Is there something that a place like X could do to get that “status”? I always thought it was Shen and maybe word hasn’t gotten out enough that she’s elsewhere.

Speaking of tips, I have a question…How much does everyone usually tip at a restaurant and at a bar? (Include variations for good/poor service, servers that are friends, type of restaurant, etc.) I personally have been a part time waitress at various places for several years, and in turn, i usually tip over 20% if the service is good, 20% if the service was mediocre, and RARELY less, the service has to be very bad (ex: IHOP one morning when the waitress told me and my friends that “she’d get to us in a minute, we weren’t exactly at the top of her priority list at the moment” and then brought us all the wrong food). Bar tabs, if I like the bartender and/or he or she was good, usually 20%.

I’d give Cassis a fair chance before writing it off: OXO once felt like R2 as well and it took time and adjusting to achieve what it became. Restaurants and scenes are **hopefully** always striving to improve, so constructive criticism is great.

@ 1: Thor, I love Bang as well. Not to mention that their drinks are awesome and the Bangaritas (both the drink and the lovely ladies in the waitstaff) are awesome

Thanks for all the responses. I was hoping to get more information about the whereabouts of the former OXO staff because there were more people that made it happen than just Shenanigans, but maybe that’s just me.

@ 8 and 4 I think the cool thing about OXO was that you had a very diverse crowd that always gave you the feeling of being at the only “in” place on town. My partner and I always felt special and recognized by staff and guests but you didn’t have to socialize if you didn’t feel like it. There were of yourse plenty of downsides (bathrooms, crowded dancefloor, ADD DJs, prices) but somehow the love that went into the project by the owners and staff made it special. For more praise, see the ancient OXO obituary post in the cVillain archives.

@ the rest: All the other suggestions are great but I feel most of them lack the dancing element as well as a chance to safely check out people other than the bartenders/bartendresses.

X-Lounge…I am sorry but sound system as well as the too bright lighting of the dancefloor make it impossible to get in the mood. There are always one or two people awkwardly dancing but not OXO type crowds.

That said, I have increasingly become a fan of ZINC. They had a couple of concerts there and I believe they could start a dance night there too.

    @ 30 let’s make Zinc happen…

@ 31 No that was no sarcasm at all. I was trying to emphasize that Escafe has a longer tradition of late night than OXO and that at least I always had a great time there. But somehow it’s not what I liked about OXO. I guess we’ll find out what Escafe can do tomorrow night! At the cVillain party.

As for the sound system at X-Lounge: I believe you cannot have a sub-woofer system and suspend the sub-woofer from the ceiling. It’s an expensive system but whoever installed it did not know what they were doing. Bass travels through the ground. So the woofer needs to sit on the floor. The result is that no matter how loud the music is it never feels present and thus never makes you want to dance.

And I didn’t think mono loco hired male servers.?

@3: hey uva non-”dousche” if you don’t like the bartender at cassis, don’t go there. you’d be moody too if you had to deal with the riff raff that comes in there and doesn’t tip. oh, and learn to spell “douche” correctly too.

    dieter said:

@115 that’s not the right answer, just because the crowd is rowdy doesn’t mean the bartender can be a inhospitable. I know the bartender in question and he can be surly and not given to the customer arts. He’s young and thinks he’s got it all figured out. I will admit that he is quite versed in wine knowledge for someone barely old enough to drink but that doesn’t excuse the attitude. It ain’t called the service industry for nothin’

By all means, no. Stick around. We have boxed wine in the kitchen and a fresh box of Bugles™ in the cupboard. We also have eleventy tonnes of umbrage in storage we can pull out, and we’ll do so as needed.
