Uncus posted an article yesterday about the things cville is doing to be and not be green. I was surprised to find out they placed the “localvore” trend in the anti-green habits of the city (the cite UVa research…didn’t see that one coming), and that they missed out on the Eco Dry Cleaners habit of distributing glossy stock spam across town. Asides from their bullet points, what else are we and are we not doing green in town?

I’d love to see the county (doubt it would ever happen) but at least the City of Charlottesville go green by having a smoking ban in restaurants, bars, etc.
This would improve air quality, potentially reduce energy use via decreased ventilation needs, reduce quantities of litter, and overall help to promote healthier environments.
that is until, the smoker goes outside to smoke.
Each and every restaurant can ban smoking now. And those that do end up getting more of my business.
Thus for my dining dollar non smoking is a competitive advantage that being said for others nothing says good pub better than a cold pint and a slight tinge of smoke in the air; therefore it is a competitive advantage to their dollar to allow smoking.
Let the market work.
banned smoking is better for all bars if everyone does it.
i.e. happier customers and no decline in revenue
Or if no one does
Francesco. Did you choose the picture intentionally to get massive response on this one… We now have a non-douche that’s really into these things?
/I’m still wondering how green is Eco Dry Cleaners?
@2 seriously. i’m living upstairs of a bar that doesn’t allow smoking, & instead all those vile people stand under my windows smoking. if it weren’t too cold to keep the windows open at night that would be annoying.
another thing the bar doesn’t allow? liquor! what?
@6 i dont even know what that means! But, yes I did pick that picture because it is definitely attention grabbing…the other tree hugger pics on Flickr were awful…and this is cVillain, lets be naughty!
both the city and county governments are doing a lot to go green within their own operations.
as far as out in the commercial/residential communities…lots more to be done.
banning smoking would be a great start.
@8. I was referring to uva non-douche! A fresh villain with a lets be naughty mentality.
/ nice pic!
@9. Didn’t they ban smoking at McGrady’s? If they can do it, so can other establishments…
But who am I to enact change?
Decent read, but they lost me with their choice of words for the second half: “Six ways Charlottesville is destroying the planet.”
Destroying the planet?!?! A little on the dramatic side, IMO.
Oh, and I’m sick & tired of folks bitching about the Meadowcreek Parkway. Fire up the bulldozers and pave the damn thing already.
@12. Ditto on the Meadowcreek Parkway!
I think they are doing the design work on Meadowcreek Pkwy as we speak. The survey people were out there not long ago. That’s the first step. Then design. Then redesign, then redesign, etc. etc. The money’s been allocated, the engineers have been hired. It’s happening. I bet its still 2010 before it’s finished, though.
@14. Why does it usually take well educated and self planning engineers that long to make such a change?
Thanks again, five. Jesus.
/words have meaning.
A ponzi scheme involves may people financially involved but only those who cash out early make any profit.
If there are 10,000 rights only 2,000 may ever actually be used to put development in an area that would not have had any development anyway. This allows for the possibility that when you decide to sell your remaining development rights they may be no one to sell them to. What happens when the market collapses and those who wait to sell have no buyers because there is no where to use the rights.
The ONLY way this isn’t true is if each development right has a place to develop when it is exercised That is markets 101. If it is proven that each right can ultimately be used then I would have to change my mind and not call it a ponzi scheme.
please ignore the last post- the evil of too many windows open
Speaking of green,.;…..
Has anyone else noticed the influx of billboard trucks?
/Billboards spend way too much gas money… let’s make those mother f’ers mobile.
//btw…. 2 Skinnee J’s concert in NYC is and was siiiiiiiiick.
