Bartending Contest at TGIF

bartending contest

A little birdie lets us know a bartending contest will take place at TGI Friday’s at 7PM tonight. You win by making drinks with the most “flair.”  All the proceeds from the contest will be given to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.   No one from Spicy Bear is going, but if you guys get pictures, please send them in!

    This sounds like train wreck, if a fun one. In fact, were I to attend, my drink would be called “Train Wreck” and it would have the most flair liquor by at least a gallon.

    ooooh, she’s making the “Gut Curdle” in the picture. Mmmmm, my favorite. For the garnish, she sticks her finger in it to swirl it around, then licks her fingers clean. She picked up that trick from Shen.

    That is a Russian Quaalude she is making- I believe

    am I allowed to think less of all of you for knowing frou-frou drinks (except the pros, of course)?

    @15 Only if I drink them- making them for others can come in quite handy.
    I only drink the vodka of that mix and never the others.

    @14: Russian quaaludes are layered dude. That’s a Screaming O.

  18. 11 Aug 2008 at 2:56 pmdieter said:

    Really? I thought the SO was 1 oz Vodka ,1 1/2 oz Bailey’s Irish cream. 1/2 oz Kahlua .
    You don’t have to layer the RQ if it’s a shot and you are going for speed.

    the problem with attending a bartending contest at TGI Friday’s, in my mind, is that you’re then at TGI Friday’s. they used to have GREAT happy hour specials on drinks and apps. apparently they loss-leadered themselves out of that business because it went away after only a few months and their specials became nothing of the sort.

    /still like to see bottles being tossed around. bartender world championships on ESPN Ocho FTW.

    @22 That is news I can use. Tho when I visit #11 on the list (like I will be in a week and a half) I generally don’t just sit down with a case of Iron City Beer and go to town like so many of the other ‘burghers.

    Pass the frou-frou drinks…. http://www.olive-twist.com/

    I’m hoping you practiced immediately after emptying them.

    sadly, not served anywhere around here that i know of. mcgrady’s *should* have it since the owners went to college in PA, but to my knowledge they don’t. :(

    @28: True. But not emptied all the way. That is a rules violation of bartenders’ challenges, and you will be disqualified.

    @29
    several college friends were from “da burgh” and would bring IC back to B’burg. not great, but not nearly as bad as IC Lite. Drinking an IC Lite was like sucking on a rusty water piper.

    @28
    you have to have something in there to simulate the weight of the actual bottle, and yes, they were properly emptied first, not summarily emptied.

  35. 11 Aug 2008 at 4:33 pmChad Day said:

    @34 yes.. IC >>>> IC Lite. not even close.

    i’m sure being from pittsburgh makes it taste better or be more appealing to me, but i’m ok with that.

    @35 in case you were wondering about being from pittsburgh making it more appealing, yes, yes it does. i never saw the appeal.

    /ditto Yeungling. when i lived near Pottstown, it was better, somehow.

    Up in Philly, you’ll give yourself away as an interloper if you don’t order it as simply a “Lager”.

    I like the Yuengling - it’s every thing a bud wants to be - tasty and american owned.

    That @22 dieter list is wrong, because a lot of cities in the deep south have really *cheap* drinks. Thus no New Orleans, Atlanta, etc.

    Fuffffthermore, San Francisco is only one there because it’s the small city at the core of an enormous metro area (#4 in the USA). It’s not even the biggest city in the SF Bay Area, but it’s where people go to drink + tourism + it’s expensive.

    @37
    you’ve got that right. used to live in Lancaster County (did a 4 year stretch), and the dive bar we frequented (Dutch Maid Lounge FTW!!!11!!1!!elventy!) had two beers on tap: “Lager” and Bud Light. the entire bar was about as big as Marco & Luca’s and it was one of those places where when the door opened, everyone stopped, turned and looked, like an Old West saloon.

    /i’ll have a High Life, please…
