Upstairs and their new “free ap” coupon deal? The people that would go to that place dont do the free app coupon thing.

Maybe the ad is for the old Boheme?

Re: the Craiglist ad…don’t think so, unless they’re using a little flourish with their choice of adjectives. Eastern’s bar is hardly “vintage,” and only about a third of it could even be considered old. Sean and Doug had the bar built out 5-6 years ago back when they owned the place. It’s just wood and paint.

I remember The Upstairs when it was also Eastern, and Janet Jospe was cooking there. It was some of the best food I’ve ever had in Cville over the years, and a beautiful space. Problem is getting people up those stairs.

@9 didn’t they put in an elevator?

  11. 11 Aug 2008 at 4:15 pm26 world said:

They had to put one in to bring it up to code for disabled patrons, but I don’t believe it’s really meant for anyone to use. I could be wrong, or it could have changed use since it was put in…

I really meant it’s just hard to get people to wander in and then up a long staircase, especially on the end of the mall. Just not very walk-in friendly.

That Craigslist ad sounds more like Boheme than Escafe/The Upstairs. That building with 2 fully stocked kitchens would be worth more than $125,000.

  17. 11 Aug 2008 at 6:39 pmcolfer said:

Yeah, that’s Boheme. The owner spent a lot of time making & is proud of that classic bar.

For what its worth, I have heard that escafé, the business not the building, is for sale. Further, that if it is not sold by spring it will close. That said, I have not heard that from a truly reliable source AND i was quite a few shots in when I heard it, so take it with a grain of salt. I suppose we all shall see.

Me? I am taking retro-alt-banjo-jam-band lesson so I can finally get some love on muse.

  24. 12 Aug 2008 at 12:24 pmKCB said:

@23 - yeah, there doesn’t seem to be a very wide bandwidth of musical diversity over there, contrary to their earlier assertions.

  25. 12 Aug 2008 at 12:37 pmbelmont yo said:

@ 24… Glad Im not the only one. I try to not carp about it, but it is frustrating. Try to offer something other than retro-alt-banjo-jam-band-fixed-gear-songs-about-your-special-journal-feelings-at-gravity? Get ignored. Im over it though.

/no strings on your instrument? you’re screwed.

in soviet muse, the non-stringed instrument screws you.

    /agree, basically

@ 24 and 25….stop crying y’all. They have one (1) music writer and he is doing a great Job. Of course he will work more (and more competently) on the things he knows best rather then give a detailed coverage of the entirety of the Charlottesville music scene all by himslef. If you want to read more about other genres you will probably need to write it yourselves.

I offered, and was ignored. Several times. So I both stopped crying, and stopped reading.

    /will never stop snarking.

  29. 12 Aug 2008 at 2:26 pmByard said:

@ 28 really? That surprises me. For one because they will usually post whatever you submit and secondly because they asked for volunteers in the past. The only thing you can’t do is review your own shows but they have posted my (very few) reviews of other people’s shows… At any rate I believe we have gotten off topic…Escafe closing would suck!

I doubt Boheme is that CL ad–they have several buyers fighting to buy it is what I’ve heard so why list it on the netz?

    /back to work

Any other guesses on what it could be? That’s my best bet, in the downtown area, for that price…

    Awesome news platos!

And speaking of escafé, I humbly invite you all out to have your electronic faces melted right the fuck off tonight at the snatch say around eleven. I know it is a worthless invite on this site as I have no banjo, nor hempy necklace, nor taste for palp, but the boogie is the boogie and it will be going down tonight in style. Got a stack of the new cd to give away (although you could just click my name and get it all pod ready and shit). Got some fresh cheese to spin… and hell… Im just in a good mood.

Ah, who am I kidding. Ain’t no love in the villain community for epic homo jams no more. Im still gonna keep inviting you, though because, “the funk can not only move, it can remove, dig?”

Free your mind and your ass will follow. Table eleven needs some feets up on it.

    peace and lovely

@36 platos…..I thought you were supposed to deny the reality of our material world? Sheesh… anyone can claim to be a famous fucking philosopher on this site, and no one checks their credentials. It’s just sloppy moderating if you ask me.

    Hey Byo,
If you decide you just gotta have a banjo, there might be some dude playing somewhere on the mall. Maybe.

Too many banjos for me to throw my hat in the ring. My gig is digital and I love it as is. Dont look to me to be the grandson of biil.

I have a whole other set/style to play (non homo jam) but oxo closed before I could rock it. Anyone? Ah well. Maybe I should just start painting again.
