First off, we wanted to thank everyone for reading and commenting on our site. It’s gotten pretty exciting to be part of something like this, and while demanding, has been a very rewarding experience. Extra special thanks to anyone who has written an article, helped us plan a party and anything else like that.
We’ve noticed a lot of new faces on the site recently and wanted to give a quick rundown of some site basics.
We have a CODE OF ETHICS. It says some pretty basic stuff like, you can’t reveal identities, you can’t do personal attacks and you can’t post false gossip.
We constantly struggle to keep each post on topic. We started Free For All’s to let everyone flirt and say whatever they wanted. Please, please keep threads on topic, otherwise we are going to start getting mad.
Feel free to comment or write your own post. Frequent commenters.. pay attention to comments from new people and welcome them. Oh, and if someone says something you don’t like, don’t take it personally and be respectful to other people’s opinions. We’ve seen plenty of negativity towards people with differing opinions and that has to stop.
Please support us by clicking on our advertisers banners and visiting their businesses.
Finally, we are always curious how we are doing, so if you want something changed, have some suggestions or anything else, let us know in the comments!

Thor, does it actually do the website any good when we click on the ads? That is, are the number of clicks to the ads somehow related to supporting the site, or does it just keep us in the good graces of the advertisers? You see what my weekend-ed mind is tying to say…
I see where this is going.
/has finger on left mouse button.
@1 - I don’t do that stuff, but I just know that our advertisers probably want to see “results” but clicks are just one measure of that I think.
how about the next time you are at x-lounge or another site sponsor’s place, let the bartender/hostess/owner know you came cause of cVillain!
Admins, do you think that having a link to this article up on the “Contact Full Archives About Login” menu bar would be a good idea? It makes it a little more ‘available’ for the new folk. The more inviting we can make it, the less the need to lurk.
Please, please keep threads on topic,
Yeah. And Thor wants a Unicorn. And World Peace.
Thor: thanks for writing this. One consistent criticism I hear from lurkers is that the comment section over here is unwelcoming. I’d like it to be otherwise. I was considering a similar kind of tone-reminder post after reading this NYT article about internet trolls.
Stanley, Totally agree.. I know we can be more welcoming. It’s a group effort thing.
OY - I do want those things, but I think welcoming, on topic threads are a possibility.
We can always install forums.
I think it would helpful if people would not go into a thread and go -” This is boring”. Why some of us find it charming others may take it as overly aggressive or unwelcoming.
@9: Yeah, well that’s like, just your opinion, man.
/just kidding; that’s a GREAT point, actually.
Bsooms!
@ true
All of you STFU.
#13 is so transparently shenanners. Nice try.
Shut up dude. Jeez.
Stanley is a d-bag.
speaking of Shenanners, another nut on UNCUS called her out as being “Cvillain’s resident dimwitted valley girl“.
In defense of our beloved ‘nanigans, WE LOVE YOU! And Hoo Boy prob hasn’t gotten laid in years, and maybe he is a tad sensitive on public display of poo-fection.
Dimwitted valley girl? ThaT IS FREAKNIG AWESOME. Like oh my gawd ya’ll.
I’m vomit-inducing? That is incredible that I have that power. Maybe I will use it more often.
@18 I think that might be someone you gave one shot too many to.
If you can’t hold your drink don’t blame the bartemder
I can’t believe that dude chose ME to single out on the stupid UNCUS blog. I feel really special. I’d like to thank Jesus for helping make me the disgusting creature I am today. I will be signing autographs outside the 7-11 on Ivy Rd at 5pm ok guys. It’s gonna be totally awesome, like totally freak me out.
So cVillain beat The Hook to a story? Is that the first time it’s happened? Is there some underground pseudo-news war going on? Has there been a post about the dispute?
Has there been a post about the dispute?
It’s sort of a riff on a theme at this point. Old Media vs. New Media yawnfest. We’ll have film at 11.
Wait, isn’t The Hook that free fireplace kindling they set out in those red boxes? I see…
The real issue is that when cvillain gets something from the Hook, DP, or C-Ville, they reference the source. The Hook doesn’t reciprocate. That’s all. No big deal.
so a local message board (us) puts up unproven stuff before a newspaper that has to check facts does.
OK, what is the problem? Why the hatorade?
k-bear - if you start trying to introduce logic into online discussions the internet will implode.
seriously.
Ooh, now there’s this guy saying Thor should give me a timeout. What a bunch of asshats.
I’m pretty sure if Thor could give you a time out, Shen, he would have long ago.
People, Cvillains included, should get over the fact that this isn’t a “news” site. It’s just not meant to be. It’s pretty neat to read the restaurant insider gossip, but is that really news? Who cares if dude X and dude Y is opening place B. All the real news usually does come from DP or the newsplex.
The restaurant reviews are good. There really should be more of those, at least until every place in town is covered. I know, I know, there’s something in the works… but the online market moves fast.
Also, reviews of recurring events, like CLAW, CDC or First Fridays, etc, are good. It informs people about the event so they can choose to go or not to the next one.
I don’t write reviews of stuff, cause no wants to hear my opinion, anyway. My mom said so.
Mmm, I wish Thor would punish me. Ooh yeah.
3stix you make excellent points. This is a gossip site, not a news site, where we talk about what’s going on around town and places to eat or drink. Some Hook bloggers obviously take it too seriously. But if somebody sees some gossip we’re chatting about and turns it into a story, they should have respect and say they heard about it here.
Mmm, I wish Thor would punish me. Ooh yeah.
and yet I’m vomit inducing…
Sorry, what was that? I was busy ruining the site.
@9 - um, so sorry to “make brave” and come into the light long enough to make a comment. I was only trying to express my appreciation for the very funny comments I usually find here. I’ll slink back to my lurker status, now… having been properly chastised.
/knuckles still smarting
Except that its true….
You bring nothing to the site but vapid comments. Really, have you ever added anything but snarky comment?
Any scoop? Any real news? Nope..just the need to hear yourself talk. The girl in class that never shuts up and asks questions she already knows the answer too while 99% of those around her just roll their eyes. Sure a few here might stand up for your support, but when you say something as insanely stupid as “I hate local politics,” when Tip says its wee bit different, you just acknowledge your lack….
No…not really. If anything, you push people away that might actually drive more numbers. Your like the DIL that causes parents to roll their eyes and go…hope she does not have any kids.
Ta, done with you for the duration. Troll if you wish, but we are grilling crab stuffed tenderloin with a 99 La Pergole Torte and need to dust you off.
@35 - ok, venturing out long enough to double-check - danpri - who the heck are you referring to - our comments were posted simultaneously, so was it not me that prompted this post/comment? I’m feeling a little paranoid…
If, indeed, you were referring to shen, I must protest, as she, and I am assuming it’s a she, is one of the funniest commenters I’ve ever read, so if she hasn’t conformed to your criteria, I, for one, don’t mind a bit.
/do I win any awards for most commas used in a single, albeit grammatically wrong, sentence?
I hope she does have kids - they’ll love her.
@34 I’m sorry I’m not sure what you mean. If you feel chastised it was not my intent. Feel brave often, most of us don’t bite
@35
sorry, danpri, i’ve been lurking on this thread because nobody was saying anything new, but i do have to stand up for Shen, as she’s quite entertaining and often does add insight and quite often has interesting things to say, even when snarking. i always have a good time on the site when Shen’s around, even when i’m on the receiving end.
“The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about”.
Oscar Wilde
@35: You ask whether she ever adds “any scoop? Any real news?”. If you pay close attention, you’d notice that a number of the “little birdie” posts come from shen. She usually makes a remark about her tidbit of news not having been posted, and when it is, it is posted as having come from a “little birdie”. Not saying she is the only one because that is obviously not true, but she does give us some very good insider restaurant information. Also, she is hilarious, and she authored the most popular post ever on this site, so I’d have to say she has contributed far more than any other non-moderator.
/The “little birdie” part may not be 100% true because I don’t have any insider information, but it would certainly make sense.
Shen is the 2nd funniest poster on this site, right under floozy.
/welcome to the internets
Shen under floozy.
HAWT!
I have to disagree, caroline. Parlie is by far the funniest character on the site. He posts way less than either of those two, and everytime its a riot. Floozy just swings her scat bat at every loose ball she sees, although she hits a lot of ‘em out of the park. Shen, well, she just posts. Sometimes, i feel like she mashes the keys with her palm and hits submit.
Woah.. personal attacks need to end. NOW. Everyone has their own M.O. and Shen does do some great, entertaining articles. Please be nice to everyone.

(the next 5 are free for alls)
Thor, that’s four.
Woah.. personal attacks need to end
I see no personal attacks. Folks can have opinions about tartare, but not other posters? Curious.
@48 Completely agree.
Plus, there are plenty of regulars on here who tear into other posters without a second thought. Riffing off of B’Yo’s Golden Rule subscription: if you dish it, you should be able to take it just as well.
The new rule seems to be if you don’t write posts, you’re not allowed to snark (which seems like a recipe for all kinds of open discourse) and it’s unspoken corollary, if you do write posts, especially popular posts, you can be as snarky as you want to anyone for any reason. yeah. I’m all for earned street cred, but getting kinda tired of the inconsistent babysitting, Thor my man. *personal attack coming atcha!*
also, I agree with Tuffy @5. Update the about section with parlie’s “so you decided to join the internet,” plus this thread and an updated cvillain glossary/meme guide. Like this, but better. The people demand to know what a “towel” is and why they should remember it.
I have to admit that I don’t read as much as I did a year ago, but I like the idea of keeping the random stuff to the “free for all” threads. Some comments seem aimed at derailing interesting, upbeat conversations and that’s pretty annoying.
What, has it been three months already and we need to revisit the great meta-debate of what makes cvillain blah blah blah? I’m starting to think red panties have a greater propensity to bunch.
All the love in the world, but Tuffy and MC are dead on - just include this what-not in the about page and when somebody gets outa line, refer them accordingly. Or publically shame them. Whatever floats your boat at the time.
[insert requisite I miss Lilith comment here]
If you love me, thanks. If not, you may go take a flying fuck at a stucco wall.
And I’m sorry but if you don’t contribute to the site as much as others, you have no credibility . You’re just a lurker that pipes up once in awhile.
Well, Lurkers do add valuable info from time to time, so we shouldn’t discredit them. It’s the negativity that makes the place uninviting at times and we need to work on fixing that so more people are inclined to comment.
Is this directed towards me? If so, I have to say that I think my credibility is damn solid around here. Just because I don’t throw my two cents in at every opportunity doesn’t mean I contribute “once in a while”.
For what it’s worth,I was speaking in general about random comments, not specifically about your contributions.
And I’m sorry but if you don’t contribute to the site as much as others, you have no credibility
I could not possibly disagree more.
This aint the Bohemian Grove of Faux Intelligensia. I have spattered my ascii all over this bitch, and I believe that no one here has less credibility than me. Conversely, on any given specific topic, someone with specific and empiric knowledge of said topic may be moved to break free the shackles of lurkerdom and share their, very credible, information. This should be encouraged.
@53 I am incapable of love, but my black heart is turned a bit off-grey by your virtual presence Shen.
@55: Hear hear, I wish more people would speak up
@56: Noooo, not at all. You’ve been here since the beginning.
P.S. People, if you give Thor and parlie a Beej once in awhile, you’re allowed to say whatever you want.
/5K337 5K337
@54 I’m sorry, but that’s just crap. This whole idea of “credibility” is crap. I thought the site was created for the users to shape their own community. Yes, it is great that people write posts, but that doesn’t make their “credibility” any greater than people who simply comment, and it doesn’t make their opinions more important. Posts are written, imo, to generate discussion, so that the discussion becomes both valuable in and of itself and also serves to make the post more meaningful to a larger group of people.
Even within commenting, I’ve found, some of the people who only comment if and when they have something to say provide me with the most entertainment and insight.
If you’re going to create a community, then these kinds of hierarchies have to go out the window.
@57: I didn’t finisht hat sentence. It was supposed to go ” crediblilty in determining post/comment quality” or yadda yadda ya…
@58: Thank you for the compliment
Am I the only one who’s just here for the parties?
Am I the only one who’s just here for the parlies?
alternatively,
Am I the only one who’s just here for the panties?
I got arrested for having no credibility in public last week.
@55: It’s the negativity that makes the place uninviting at times
negativity like 53? or like 35? In. Consistent. Baby. Sitting.
/hi Lys!
@54 - No credibility because we don’t post, I think that is what is known as framing your argument. lol
But with that being said, some of us no credibility lurkers do enjoy coming here from time to time and seeing some intelligent banter, or at least, we used too. The past few months have seen a few people on this site buying into their own hype and turning what was a really neat site into a high school chat room ( i.e. a lot of negativity.) Here’s to hoping that it returns to it’s roots and finds its feet again.
@53 Shen I would not want to deal with the torrent of discontent that you have had to read. It would make me feel very defensive and would make me mad as well. However I find it telling that people have decided to be more critical of you on the Hook blog (where oy is doing a great job defending her, I have nothing to improve his argument and logic) It says to me that people are afraid of you or Thor and that seems bad.
Of course telling everyone who doesn’t like you to take a flying fuck into stucco is understandable but does lead into the very problem that they have an issue with. You are probably the biggest cheerleader this site has and Spicy Bear probably has made money on you being here. Saying a lurker has no credibility is wrong as well. While this site owes you much it doesn’t owe you everything. I think the attacks on you are harsh but they are not without merit.
And since I won’t be performing any special favors for the mods- all I have are the words on this page coupled with my logon. This all seems little like the movie “Mean Girls”, all I’m asking is when I read your comments Shen, I don’t want to root for the bus.
hmm where to start? oh yeah:
The complaints of UNCUS et al that this site is like a middle school lunch table are well founded. Shenanigans is time and time again the torchbearer of that attitude. Observing interesting dialogue is what gets my (and many others’) clicks; self righteousness and inclusivity will drive them away.
/piping up
//completely sans credibility
///Put a leash on her, Turkish, before she gets bitten
crediblilty in determining post/comment quality
And why, pray tell, should anyone be doing that for anyone other than themselves?
inclusivityexclusivityFTFM
Basically I don’t understand the whole argument that if someone is a jerk they’ll drive you away. It’s the fucking internet. How long have forums been around? We live in charlottesville and we aren’t (most of us anyway) hippies who believe in peace, love, and understanding. This site is snarky for sure - and snarkier than most. You gotta have thick skin to post here maybe - but then you don’t go tiptoeing through the social scene in Charlottesville either do you?
This site is snarky for sure - and snarkier than most.
Oh, really?
This joint is like The Puffy Pink Party Princess Forum compared to some corners of the tubes.
God damn. Thanks for ruining my day with that image b’yo.
You’re a jerk and I’m never posting here again - but I will come see you DJ.
Jareth chimes in with the “Snatch” quote - instant credibility!
I, however, am feeling a distinct lack of credibility and un-cliquey-ness
/doesn’t know what UNCUS stands for…
Just trying to keep our respective frames of reference polished is all. I stroll in internet ghettos and wastelands so you don’t have to.
@74 If we were to go all “you know your a newbie when,” clicking on a B’yo link when not 100% sure no co-worker is looking over your shoulder would be in my top five.
cbob - haven’t you been around long enough to know better ; )
/right back at ya’ MC
72: In the halcyon days of 2007, I tiptoed my way onto cvillain and never argued until i was strong enough to take it. Lulu seems to be following that same model, god bless her. I probably would never have gotten to this lofty state of villaintude if I’d been attacked, shunned or shamed right outta the gates or been told my opinion wasn’t worth anything before I’d even expressed it.
now in the bleak scary internet of 2008, I love/hate you all and will comment/quit every damn day forever.
oh dear lord, yes. CVillain at its worst is Disneyland compared to some of the forums of yore. alt.flame was even lighthearted compared to rec.motorcycles and the Denizen’s of Doom (motto - Live to flame, flame to live)
/DoD number 0923 - linkypoo
We are not dig or fark or any of the many much rougher parts of the internet. However we are local and that is very different. There is a very real chance that you will see those who are in this very thread tonight at South Street. The size of this town and the awkwardness of the meat world make the feelings we hurt more personal.
Not asking any one here to snark less but just to realize it’s a more personal type of site for many because it’s in our backyard- Hell, we ain’t ever going to be cvillenews either.
I actually agree with dieter. oh man, I quit. I mean, I comment!!
if anyone takes any offense at any of my snarkiness, feel free to buy me a beer and we’ll be even.
Ya’ll just keep on snarkin, that’s why I’m here, and I’ll put on my big girl panties and try to keep up.
/one foot in…
ok, i know its tuesday and ya’ll are all down at SS, but if anyone makes it home still able to type, type - ya’ll! I had to terrible choice to attend a party instead of attending George T and Buddy G at the pavilion - lame, I know, but still up looking for snarky but intelligent words of sarcasm…
I need you, people!
I choose to believe Tuesday at SS doesn’t exist when I’m out of the state.
Since I’m out of state as well it doesn’t exist for me either
Too much happens on here during the day for me to keep up. What were the highlights?
I choose to believe Tuesday at SS doesn’t exist when I’m out of the state.
Out of what state? The state of intoxication? I’m imagining echo adamantly denying the existence of SS until he’s five pints in, standing at the bar there, when he suddenly begins to adamantly profess his belief in SS’s existence.
/also, psst, there’s a brand new FFA for this kind of banter!
ok, what is ffa?
/clueless
ffa = free for all
ffa = Free For All
It’s the ongoing series of repositories for all the noise that clouds the signal. Basically, you can post anything you want. Bitch about work. Or your SO. Or post stupid/crazy/funny shit you found on youtube. All without mucking up the on-topic chatter. Latest chapter here.
um
wtf
Okay, see, 94 and 95, along with this whole conversation, are the kind of thing the admins (and I’m not an admin, mind you; but I channel their wishes from time to time) would like us to move to the FFA threads, so as not to distract from, you know, specific, on-topic stuff.
Although, in hindsight, you’re not being off-topic, since this is the “so are you new here” thread. But for future reference, the FFA is a safe space on the internet that’s been created just for you (and everyone else, of course).
So, are we clear on trying to be more accommodating to those who have slightly less thick skin?
I agree that we aren’t fark or anything like that, but most of us live in Charlottesville, in a small town and this site is for people in Charlottesville, not snarkers, farkers or what have you. I think we will all be more happy if we do facilitate a more diverse discussion.
/democracy’s in.
@ 98 Who are you addressing?
@98 “we will all be more happy if we do facilitate a more diverse discussion.”
I having a feeling that you will be responsible for making sure that gets done
@72: Thank you. FFS. Oooh,, I’m a bully, I’m so mean, I’ll get you and scare you into lurking…..! WTF ever.
false gossip? just think about that…. isn’t most gossip at least not COMPLETELY true?
