L-A-R-S Lars Lars Lars

What happened? UVA Men’s basketball coach Dave Leitao announced yesterday that Tunji Soroye would be receiving a scholarship and Mikalauskas would not be returning to the program for failing to live up to the program’s standards (on virginiasports.com, dailyprogress.com, and nbc29.com).  No other elaboration.  TheSabre is abuzz; allegedly Lars’ grades are fine; any of you birdies hear anyhing?

Yes, heard lots of rumors, all seem to sound the same.

Can you post rumor here without being crucified? I’m not trying to expose someone’s personal life on the Net without permission.

I heard that he fell out of favor with the coaches because he spent his summer competing on Lithuanian “Dancing with the Stars”. If he is back in Cville next year, watch out because Lars picked up some dance moves that will blow your freakin mind.

Newspaper reports today (RTD, DP) state he was suspended from school and is appealing that decision, and then would have to go to the coach and ask to be reinstated to the team.

Remember, he was recruited by Pete Gillen not Dave.

Best guess is he loses on appeal.

His performance late last season garnered some national (ESPN et al) attention

I would imagine he may be receiving offers from other schools (non ACC) as well as interest from Europe Pro Ball.

He could redshirt a year at an A-10 (or other) school and then play his final year of eigibility.

Lars is a big man on campus. He would likely have an positive impact on a number of programs.

I think it is a shame that UVA and the team would do this, rather than work with him so they could all figure out the problems that are creating this mess.
Lars cannot just pick up and “go home” like so many of the other UVA athletes can.
He has not been home in a number of years..and has not actually lived at home for an even longer time since he was plucked out of Lithuania and placed in the Blue Ridge School for high school. Clearly UVA had something to do with him being sent to Blue Ridge School. You cannot foster a young man’s growth and career for such an extended period of time and then merely say “you’re out.”
He may have done something that warrants discipline, but just cutting him off cold and giving him no options…well that’s just cruel.

Boo fucking hoo…if you break the rules, no matter where you’re from, you’re gone. That’s what pisses me off about athletes and everyone’s attitudes about treatment of athletes…everyone, most of all themselves, thinks that they should get special treatment just b/c they can make a layup or score a touchdown. I’m sorry, but fuck that, they are no more special than any other student at UVA and shouldn’t be treated any differently, esp. when it comes to school rules or standards.

Yeah unless your home is Lithuania and your parents have absolutely NO money. They only could come to America once while he was playing and his shoulder was hurt .
I’m not trying to get us all to feel bad for Larsy-doodle, I just think that if UVA is going to sneakily get a young boy out of his country and enroll him in a central Virginia boarding school, all with the goal of him playing UVA hoops, it’s kind of a cop out to kick him off the team during the 25th hour. They should have just let him stay in Lithuania in the first place.

@18 The guy couldn’t live by the rules and I guarantee it just wasn’t one thing that got him dismissed.
He had a golden opportunity and blew it- his loss of scholarship helps out Tunji Soroye. Perhaps that should be put into any equation before the Virginia program is so easily condemned.

@14, 18 - I’m not certain that UVA plucked and placed Lars. They usually use Hargrave or FUMA (Fletcher Arritt being a UVA alum and friend of the program for decades) for that, not Blue Ridge or Miller (where other Lithuanians were placed). Better guess is a scout/runner for an agent saw him in Lithuania and got him placed in the hopes of cashing in down the road.

@15 - Athletes who screw up in the College of Arts & Sciences learn that they’re not going to receive special treatment. Unfortunately for them, it’s usually after they’ve screwed up enough that they’re given a year’s suspsension. Until then, they still think they’re going to be protected by coaches, especially those who have gone to US high schools.

\I think I’ve said too much
