This message has been circulating to various people in Charlottesville:
Dear Friends,
It is with deep regret and heavy heart that as of August 15th I will no longer be a part of Crush Wine Shop. Crush has decided to take a different path, which will no longer include my services. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone I have had the distinct pleasure of serving. I have made many friends and acquaintances there. I will miss seeing daily my great fellow Belmontians but most of all; I will miss seeing everyone in the store and helping with wine choices and talking food. Thank you all for giving me the chance to be of service and I look forward to seeing you in the future…Oh yeah, if anyone knows of employment opportunities please let me know.
Gregg Oxley
It’s a pity. For those of you that don’t know, Crush hosted a non-elitist wine party for us and together with another villain was one of the originators of the red panties. Gregg, thanks for sharing wine with us, in humble fashion, and sharing in our cVillain pursuits.
We’ll miss you and hope you can find something else in Charlottesville!

that sucks. i remember when i met gregg with 2 g’s at the wine party, he was a good guy. we talked for a second and then i was like, “yeah i’m parlie!”
and he was like, “…oh.” truthfully, i couldn’t agree more.
best of luck, gregg.
bummer.
Hey spicy bear! why don’t you hire the dude or make him blog about the food and w(h)ine
Gregg…was just getting to know you over there at Crush. Best Luck in your future endeavors, you will be missed.
jesus tap-dancing christ, i’ve been looking forward to seeing him tomorrow for so long
This is shitty news…. Gregggg was a dude and had great hair.
Best of Luck xx
If you have any interest at all in learning to cook, I may know of a job for you… not really feeling like outing myself right here (to anyone more than I’m already out to), but if you are at all intrigued I leave it to your own creativity to figure out how to get in touch with me (something as simple as a comment with your email in it would work fine).
best of luck, gregg
So…why?
Did I miss something?
i thought GreGG was the owner, no?
@10 - the impression that I got is that he was the front of the house and his partner (somebody connected to Orzo?) was the money.
@11 the partner is paul, isn’t it. so is gregg’s wife not there anymore either?
/still saddy
Gregg is on the left in this pic:

with partners “Paul Coleman (right) and his wife, Nan”
bummer….gregg rocked.
@13 that’’s intersting; i’d forgotten that article. that’s not that wife i was referring to though. it’s gregg’s wife that makes the mustard & went to van halen, isn’t it?
Cool, so if I just keep commenting on each post, I can be the only one listed in the sidebar? COOL
/its the small things in life
Yet the small things in life are so readily purloined… like that sterling cigareeeeet-box someone pocketed from the side-table at my last home cocktail-gathering.
Any chance of something funny (not from me) in the way of a post/thread for friday time-wasting?
MAN! I cannot believe Gregg is gone. What kind of idiot would fire the guy who built his business? I remember I knocked on the door two or three days before they opened and Gregg opened up and gave me the ten cent tour. I’ve had a lot of great wine thanks to Gregg, looks like I’ll be shopping at Market St. again though, oh well.
@18 Its hard to say why greg is gone. He was very personable and contributed greatly to the enjoyable vibe at crush. The owner Paul is a very succesful guy not a likely idiot. So it’s probable that some sort of disagreement occured between the two that led to their parting ways. Who knows what this was over but the obvious would be money, responsibilities, direction of the store or some sort of personal matter between the two. It could be gregg that initiated the split or it could be paul, hard to say. How this ends is probably uneventful, businesses gain and lose employees all the time, good businesses/ideas continue on without missing a beat and bad business don’t. I suspect that given the number of people greg met at crush he will land on his feet and be fine, I also suspect the same will occur for crush.
I’ve basically invested half of my bank account in Crush in the last 8 months, and most of it has been because of Gregg and his suggestions. When my wife and I heard the news, our immediate response was that we no longer had a favorite wine shop to frequent in town. I think Crush sells great wine, but my strong desire to continue shopping there is now gone with Gregg leaving. Hopefully he ends up at another wine shop, restaurant, or food store in town. We loved hanging out with the guy, and best of luck to him in the future. As for Crush, it may take a little while before I head back in the store. I know I won’t be nearly as willing to go out of my way or even pay a few bucks more for a bottle of wine in the near future.
@20: I’m pretty sure you’re my husband that just wrote that and I emphatically second your thoughts.
I couldn’t agree more. Gregg is a wonderful guy and I sincerely hope he stays here in Charlottesville. He would succeed in anything he wants to do with his personality and charisma. I’ll be raising my glass to him tonight, but it won’t be at Crush. No bad wishes for Paul, but I just don’t have as much of a desire to go anymore either. We miss you already, Gregg. Hang out with us sometime if you will. Also, I agree with dieter– a Gregg food & wine blog/Web site would be fantastic. But it wouldn’t be as much personal one-on-one interaction, which I suspect he likes.
Man this has been a crappy week for news.
[…] tastings at Crush (dammit not without Gregg!), Market Street and Beer […]
alittlebirdietoldme…….you may wanna talk to sum folks at beer run…if ‘n you feel up 2 it.
much love and good vibes to all…thanks for soothing the sting a little. I hope all will raise a glass and toast with me….come on PBR included…A TOAST… “”Work is the death of the drinking classes” or “When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading”. this is only a pit stop in my NASCAR life…I will gas up and be back on the track in no time…thanks for all the kind words and floozy…you are my favorite Tramp
Gee I am out of the loop. Good luck Gregg where ever you may land. I truly wish that and you know it. In the meantime, don’t abandon CRUSH because of what you may assume, because it is ignorant to make decisions based on assumptions. Support you local business’ because that is what we cvillains do. And you never know who you may meet there, perhaps someone as cool as Gregg?.
I just got an email from “Hannah & Andrew” which adds insult to the no more Gregg injury.
@26 i was thankful to receive it because there was no way i was remembering their names from friday & i didn’t want to ask again.
I never knew there names, but it should have just said Crush Wine Shop.
“there names,” echo? you need a drink.
actually, it went into my junk mail. my email only likes gregg.
Your crazy, I don’t need a drink.
/that one was on purpose
