It has been a crazy week, but don’t think we could let you starve without a rundown of this weekend’s hottest and sexiest events. So, here, we, go….
Friday:
- Feed your music need at Muse, Sean has this weekend’s scene down
- wine tastings at Crush (dammit not without Gregg!), Market Street and Beer Run
- Karaoke
with Sara Rogerswith Steve Miller at the Baja Bean Norte location (across from Sam’s club): someone PLEASE go and let us know how it is…karaoke in cville at a Mexican restaurant? PS you can combine dinner with this one too, check out the menu here. - On Stage: American Shakespeare Center Blackfriar’s Playhouse- “Measure for Measure” (7:30PM). Interesting things that happen in the play (this actually sounds really exciting!):
- Angelo swiftly restores old laws against sexual depravity, closes the city’s brothels, and arrests fornicators.
- Claudio is immediately arrested and sentenced to death for apparent premarital acts with his pregnant fiancé, Juliet.
- Plots to rescue Isabella’s integrity, save Claudio’s head, and expose Angelo’s treachery ensue.
Saturday:
- City/Farmers Market: come check out the best local produce, meats, arts, crafts, etc…
- 2008 Staunton Music Festival (Saturday and Sunday):The festival includes concerts of Baroque, Classical, and Romantic chamber music, a fully-staged Baroque opera, and premieres by contemporary Virginian composers. This year’s opera is Handel’s Acis and Galatea.
- American Shakespeare Center Blackfriar’s Playhouse: King Lear (2:30PM)
- 80’s Night at Three on the Corner
- Dad’s Night Out
Sunday:

um, karaoke with sara rogers is at the baja bean in richmond. i mean, still an option, but not as close as the one on le corner.
and i detest karaoke, but the couple of times i’ve gone it’s been packed and everyone seems to have a lot of fun. i decided i was done with it when this really drunk guy staying at the red roof inn got up and sang a tequila-fueled, entirely too heartfelt version of “how soon is now?” you could have cut the post-song awkward silence with a machete…
our baja usually does karaoke tuesdays & thursdays, fwiw.
I, who just downloaded a promo compilation of remixed carpenters songs*, will be at the snatch tonight, and at x-lozenge on sat. Pop round and say hey. Better yet, pop round and say hey hey hey like Fat Albert.
*have not listened to it yet, could be heaven or hell… but just like me, it longed to be, close to my CPU.
I thought the 80’s fad was starting to fade away finally.
Karaoke at the Bean on the corner was always a fun time, even more so when one could go to O’Neal’s for a $2.50 burger beforehand…
/memory a little fuzzy…they were the same night, right?
I thought vanillavy said the bb noth location, not the one on the corner
Karaoke at the Baja North is an entirely different crowd from the Corner location.
It is the better location if you want to go for dinner and karaoke with a large group of people as it is slightly less crowded/loud.
Its also slightly more family oriented, though still not exactly kid friendly.
If you really love to sing karaoke, the Baja north is a good spot. As with any regular karaoke den, its home to a fair share of regulars who will sing the same five songs every week with varying degrees of musical finess:
The Would have been lounge singer who covers Cher, the chain smoking gen-xer who favors Tool and Nine Inch Nails songs, the comic book fan who reenacts Tenacious D ballads, and the grizzled Sinatra devotee, and the singing bartenders are a few of these folks you can look out for.
Steve is a great guy as well.
There’s also a wine tasting at Market St. tonite I believe.
Also, starting about 10:30-11ish DJ Western Front at Cassis. Should be a great late-night spot. He does some awesome mash-ups and has some mind blowing transitions. Definitely check that out… he’s far better than eSc over at Escafe…
Hey, thanks for taking the time to point that out. Awful nice of you.
/everyone has a right to their opinion.
At least DJ ESC is smart enough not to play Cas-sucks.
Also, I would point out, that I have Western Front’s demo (he is a really nice guy, btw), he is good, but he plays a completely different style of music than I, sooo… anyway, thanks again.
At least DJ ESC is smart enough not to play Cas-sucks.
Notice she didn’t refute the part about the quality of the DJ, just the location.
/Just messing with you b’yo. Back away from the ledge.
No worries dude, I play mostly for fun and never claimed to be any good… I hate dj dick waving contests. Its music. Some people like some stuff, others like other stuff.
Do think this underrthebridge person was being deliberately nasty though, which kinda sucks… but wait… what lives under bridges? That’s right… trolls!
@11: And he hits the nail on the head…again.
Don’t know if I’ll make it to the cafeteria, but X is a definite tomorrow.
@11 Nice remix of Under the Bridge.
Very clever 26!
& this is what beer run is doing tonight, *instead of wine*:
Join us this Friday for a very special Friday night beer tasting, and cheese pairing with Derek Zomonski from Bell’s Brewery. Bell’s beers consistently score high across the board on both Beer Advocate and Rate Beer, and are one of our top selling brands. These guys don’t make a bad beer. We will be tapping a gravity-poured firkin of Bell’s Porter for this event, as well as pouring the Bell’s Lager and Two-Hearted on draft! Tasting starts at 6pm!
Beer Tasting Menu
Bell’s Lager
Bell’s Oberon Wheat Ale
Bell’s Amber Ale
Bell’s Pale Ale
Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale
& as much as we heart gregg, let’s not hate on paul.

/tasted all the albarinos by the glass- nessa is best-a.
I’m guessing the judge might have been a little lighter with the sentence if it had been a bottle of patron…at least da brat might have been able to employ the “twinkie defense”, no?
