Devil’s Backbone Brewery Coming to Charlottesville Area

Earlier this year it was a new cidery, now, it’s Devil’s Backbone Brewery Company, a new brewery which will rest just below the Wintergreen Ski resort.  It now joins, South Street, Star Hill and Blue Mountain in the first Virginia attempts to create a Beer Trail aka Path of Liver Destruction.

But have no fear my friends, the beer should be good.  It won’t initially be available in bottles, so you’ll have to make the trek out to Wintergreen to taste the year-round offerings:  Helles, Vienna amber, hefe and American IPA.  Now, the question is, is that trip worth the drive for you cVillains? I’m sure the tourists will make it, but it’s going to be a tough decision to drive past Blue Mountain on Path of Liver Destruction.  Maybe it’s healthier that way?

Of course you could always start at Wintergreen and stop at each place on the drive home…Sounds like a field trip!

    sweet, we can just roll.

anyone else have the ultimate afternoon brainstorm? Dr Ho’s for lunch, Devil’s Backbone for “tea” and Blue Mountain for dinner/beers on the way home?

I love the name. I can’t wait. Yes, I’ll be driving out there, particularly as fall in the Blue Ridge starts.

This sort of thing is why some of us live around here.

Plus I’m a sucker for names made out of combinations like “Satan’s” + [body part], or “Hell’s” + [name of room in your house], e.g., Satan’s Armpit, or Hell’s Breakfast Nook.

If they make a wheat beer called Hefestopheles, I will laugh. It would be appropriate, since the ubiquity of hefeweizen beers is the surest sign that these times they are benighted. Blech.

    Yeah, I don’t know.

@18 The problem with Hefe’s these days is that the ones proliferating are the cheap, watered-down knockoffs that are as much like the real deal from Bavaria as Miller lite is like a Czech Pilsener. But if you think these times are ‘benighted’, you don’t know how good you’ve got it. It wasn’t long ago there were no brewpubs at all, because they were illegal. Local options were like Stroh’s (fire brewed! whatever that means), Rolling Rock, or Narragansett Light. And we had to walk to school. (Uphill, both ways!)

Anyway, just skip the local hefe, like the bone to the BL-drinking hounds that it is, and try the IPA.

Not sure when the Backbone will be open, tho. I went by there earlier this summer and it had just been framed out — the outline was up, but no solid walls. Anyone see it more recently? Know an opening date?

still incomplete, but you can get a good idea of what it will be. It looks like a big ol’ mountain lodge, all high ceilings, wood beams and stone. Opens november.

@3-Probably not a good idea if I do. I scare everyone enough sober…

This would be a moment when it would be nice if Cvillian had a sort of pledge system, like a fraternity! Then there would be no problem in matters such as these…
