When Taxes Bite

WCAV 29 reports that local Outback Lodge owner, Terrence Martin, was arrested for reportedly/allegedly not paying Charlottesville meals tax.  This is the 10th time he is arrested.

Restaurants are required to turn over their receipts to the city every month. The meals tax is set at four percent and is expected to bring in $7 million to the city this year alone.

This follows up with last week’s gossip bit about the Outback Lodge’s suspended liquor license and ensuing luck Terrence had with the lottery.  Apparently the place kicks ass so lets hope it gets up and running again.

I hope so. It’s the only metal venue in town and pretty popular locally.

This seems to be a trend lately from what I have seen. I think this might have something to do with them selling WAY more alcohol then food, which will definitely shut you down in this *ahem* great state of VA.

    1. Best soundsystem of any venue in town. Fact.

    2. Worst perceived location in town. (It’s actually like an eight-minute walk from downtown, but good luck convincing anyone to go out there.) I’m still convinced the OBL should pony up for a shuttle van running to the DTM on fifteen-minute intervals. Bonus points: serve food on the trip to beef up the food-vs.-booze numbers.

va abc law “requires” any “barthat must also seel food” to have 50% income be food generated.
otherwise, you loose the liquor licensce.

also:selling to underage drinkers, having heavy pours, (one of my favorite~:) selling a drink to an intoxicated person…/please feel free to take the person’s money but if they get drunk, we have the right to give you a ticket//if we don’t give them one first.

@5 after the anti-smoking law went into effect in florida, a lot of bars got rid of their food service because if they were under a certain percentage of food sales they could still allow smoking. funny how priorities are different.
