Himalayan Fusion: Caution Hot

himalayan fusion

Need a little spice in your life? Try Himalayan Fusion. I love spicy food. The hotter the better…that is until I tried Indian Spicy at Himalayan Fusion. I’m feelin’ hot, hot, hot. I am also no longer in search of something spicy.

The service here is great. The wait staff is helpful and they know their stuff. The wait staff is even kind enough to warn you against ordering Indian spicy. Ekkk. They will gladly help with an indecisive significant other, correct a mispronounced dish, or clarify a confusing description. They can get a little busy, which slows things up. I recommend trying to eat there after 7:00 p.m. when things slow down a bit.

I was impressed with not only the service, but the venue itself. The place offers indoor and outdoor seating. It is also clean, inside and out. Overall: friendly staff, clean bathroom, outdoor seating, clean dishes, and enjoyable mood music.

Now for the dish details. The menu is pretty extensive and is a mix of Indian, Nepalese, Tibetan, with a dash of Chinese. I have yet to find anywhere that has a menu quite like Himalayan Fusion in Cville. Curries, Salads, and Naan grace the menu.

This place is vegetarian friendly (as our very own Vanillavy will tell you). They offer the perfect size appetizers that won’t spoil dinner. Food can be ordered mild to Indian hot, which can make even the toughest critic cry. I thought I was a spicy badass, but one bite of my Chicken Tikki Masala took my breath away. I had no idea something so spicy could be conjured up in Cville. Regardless of the heat the dish was very tasty. A little bread and milk go along way.

I must admit I have never made it to dessert so be sure to give it a try and let us know how it measures up.

I also should mention there is a lunch buffet (great for those on the run). They also serve alcohol (I would not recommend the place otherwise).

If you are an Indian food expert this may not be the place for you, but for everyone else Himalayan Fusion hits the spot. Good food, alcohol, friendly service, spiciness, and cleanliness. Need I say more? Try it and be warned about the spice. Hot, hot, hot.

Hmmm. Totally disagree. Pretty tasty, but really not that spicy. It barely reaches the “medium” at thai 99.

I agree that it’s very delicious, but I also agree with the folks that didn’t notice the spiciness… I am a wimp when it comes to heat in food and I definitely didn’t notice anything. Perhaps they’re just inconsistent.

HF is one of my favorites. Always tasty, and I like the decor.

Just OK. Nothing special. Milan has the best chicken tikka masala. I guess if you wanted to stick to the Mall area, it’s your best bet.

I’m a pretty big fan of this place – I also prefer the dinner to the lunch buffet. I think Royal Indian has the best Chicken tikka masala if you’re heading up 29 area. Now I really want some indian food.

I went with this really cute girl to HF and I totally tried to be manly and show her I could eat the spiciest food (I can eat super spicy stuff).

Well, I don’t know if the chef was playing a joke on me or not, but the food was waaay too hot, even for a nordic god.

Anyway, she didn’t think I was cool and I literally couldn’t finish my meal because it was so hot.

i have always enjoyed the lunch buffet and invariably have intense cravings for it on Tuesday (curse them and their Tuesday closing!) but it is indeed limited. I haven’t tried their dinner menu yet, but it looks intriguing.

HF has good food, if you can get it. We were there on a Thursday evening 6 pm. We got a table quickly, orders were taken, 40 minutes later, no food. We asked the waitress and she said it would be another 25 minutes. At this point we needed to be at a concert, so we said we could not wait. There were 6 people, we had 2 beers, 2 wines and a coffee. They offered no appologies, and were actually very rude. They did not offer to give us the beverages for free. We will not be getting our indian food from HF ever again. Talk about poor customer service.

It is because the owner and the chef keep talking and tries to sell alcohol more than food.

That’s their way to make money. Try to sell more beverages then food. They say free refill for pepsi products but they charge for every refill.

I’ve only been a few times, but each time the service was fine (not excellent, but not bad either)…they were out of the first 3 kinds of wine we tried to order once…but the waiter was very apologetic and tried to help us choose yet a new one each time.

@12 I had the same experience as far as the service goes. We actually got our food (a hour after we arrived) before we got our silverware. I will say once the food arrived it was very tasty, but it was too little, too late. I, for one, will not be back…

the service delay nightmare stories i’ve heard are the primary reason i have only been for lunch buffet so far. nearly every single person i’ve talked to about ordering off the menu says not to do it unless you have a LOT of time to kill.

@23 the lunch buffet is mad cheap, and you don’t need any service at all, terrible or otherwise. i think it’s like 6.95, plus about 1.xx for a refreshing glass of ginger ale (no bourbon).

this has been my first helpful comment, ever.

@12, 14, 19- the service there really is slow but I think it is the fault of the kitchen and the management, rather than the actual servers who do seem to work quite hard and have to deal with the flack from angry customers. The last time we went, we waited over a full hour after placing our orders, and realizing that this was not the fault of our server we tried talking to the management about it but she basically refused to speak to us. Her one and only comment was “you know how it is here” since this happens every time we go to diner at HF. She was extremely rude and unapologetic. Lucky for them the food and the atmosphere is good.

see, that just makes it worse. that’s mgmt trading on a bad reputation and relying on food to get them through. what if it’s a bad night for the kitchen or the ingredients they got that day aren’t quite up to snuff? then you had bad food and bad service and were treated poorly by mgmt as well. three strikes and you’re out, i say.

also, i’ve never had the servers apologize for a delay, and yes, they do run around putting out fires in that place. do they need more staff or something?
