High Tide Burrito Coming to Forest Lakes?

From a birdie…

Do you guys know anything about High Tide Burrito opening in Forest Lakes (next to Food Lion)? Some internet sleuthing has netted me little info:

- Someone claiming to be “a friend of the owners” went to NC to take pictures of the beach to sell at the restaurant.

- Owner’s name is James Yancey?

- Acquired a liquor license on Sept. 13th

- Supposedly opening in September

- hightideburrito.com was anonymously bought in July, but is currently parked by GoDaddy

If you guys know anything, I’d love to hear it. I am psyched about a burrito place on the north side of town, and this looks like it has promise.

High Tide Burrito will be opening soon, probably within two weeks as finishing touches are being applied. Owner’s are brothers Jack & James Yancey. Chef James is a graduate of Johnson & Wales, Jack’s love of cooking inspired him to grow up in the restaurant business. Both Jack & James have many years combined experience; from flipping burgers to five star fine dining. Both have gained invaluable experience working with renowned Chef’s throughout eastern United States from Virginia to the Outer Banks, South Florida and the Gulf Coast as well as catering and special events opportunities, thus the “High Tide” theme. Keep an eye on these home grown Charlottesville boys as the flavor & flair of this place will rock!

High Tide Burrito recently provided a sampling at our company picnic for about 100 people. It was a big success ! The hand rolled burritos and homemade salsa were out of this world.

I’ve seen the menu, and it looks delicious. It features old favorites such as taco salad and, of course, burritos, but the emphasis is on upscale Mexican food (nouvelle Mexican?), You can choose from beef (hand-shredded), pork (hand-pulled), chicken or vegetarian. There are a number of sauces also available. I personally am dying to try the dish that is topped with mango habanero sour cream. You know the food is going to be great when Jack and James Yancey are in the kitchen slow-cooking all that gorgeous meat and fabulous sauces, preparing everything by hand.

I have a feeling that High Tide Burrito is going to be crowded to the gills with happy and hungry eaters who will rush there to get a great meal!

Fail! I’m not going there because the new owner thinks I’m an idiot and that’s against the new be nice rules.

These people aren’t even Hispanics. Jack & James should be ashamed of jacking the thread and not paying for an ad.

  20. 18 Sep 2008 at 2:26 pmparlie said:

@18 sort of. what happens is that the comment threads, no longer woven together in a self-adhesive matrix spanning the four dimensions, each coil up into nanoscopic 6-dimensional spheres and wiggle off into the cosmos, becoming irrevocably integrated with all things material, spatial, and temporal. so in essence, the internet achieves immortality, teleportation, intra- (and inter-) dimensional existence, and time travel all at the same time.

    bonghit.

Wow. Comments 1 - 6 are pretty bizarre. I know these guys, and heard they were opening a wraps place up that way because there wasn’t any north of town. I’d really like to think they aren’t behind those comments. On the one hand, they are young (under 30, I think), which has been known to lead to brashness in certain individuals. On the other, there are plenty of troublemakers who might have contributed 2 - 5 to mock Kevin or welcome us to the Internet. I don’t know Kevin, be he sounds legit.

Anyway the bros. definitely aren’t hispanic, but I don’t think the founders of Chipotle or Zazus were, either. Some time ago, both of them worked at Riverside, and at least one at Fuel Co. Don’t know much more. I’ll see if I can get any more low-down about this place and report back.

The thing that bugs me is that if whoever spammed the site had spent any time perusing the site they’d have learned that they needn’t submit anonymous raves about a place that hasn’t opened (that’s what Yelp is for). They could have simply written that they know the people and here’s what’s likely to be on the menu and all of the food oriented sorts on cVillain would have written “hey, thanks for the info, can’t wait to try it.” Dan from Eppie’s being a fine example. The people here seem pre-disposed to support local businesses and like food in the likely price range of High Tide. Be honest and up front about it and you’ll find a good response. Treat us all like we’re morons and will be swayed by the prediction of “packed to the gills with happy and hungry customers” and we’re more likely to be annoyed. Or at least I am.

@23 If you’re saying I’m getting paid for comment 22, you’ve watched too much television. Or maybe you’ve never done anything for somebody other than yourself, so you’re suspicious of it. I know the family, so I know them. I can say for sure they really are a couple of local guys. I can’t say how the food will be — I don’t know.

If they were seriously stupid enough to write comments 2 - 6, then I’m disappointed in them. Maybe I’m giving them too much credit, but those comments are so over the top it’s ironic.

I do know the owners of High Tide Burrito, and they are opening tomorrow, 09/27/08. A couple of weeks ago they invited a few Friends and Family to sample their Beef and Chicken Burritos and they were delicious!!! Everything is Homemade and I witnessed this myself. They were catering an Employee Picnic the next day so maybe that comment (#5) isn’t a hoax after all…….They have had a menu printed for a few weeks now and handed them out to Friends and Family so # 6 probaby received one that day, as I did. I believe People that were there, made comments 2-6, not the owners. They are both very nice Guys and I look forward to their Restaurant being a Huge success. Do yourself a favor and stop by there and try their delicious food. They are located near Food Lion and Tuesday Morning at Forest Lakes………..By the way, I am a Friend of theirs and not them writing this…………….

This place? Who knows? Who really cares? When it opens, officially…take it from there! Sic COCOnut on them! The Boat House? Now that is open! Officially! I can say from experience, first-hand mind you….don’t waste your time or $$$. I hate to be mean, cynical or skeptical about a newly-opened restaurant, they need all the help they can get, but really, come on! It’s sad, very sad what some restaurateurs try to thrust upon Charlottesville overall. A lot of us end up grasping at our throats and wallets, wondering why we put ourselves through that experience! The Boat House people really should have researched the market a little better and tried to improve on a concept that previously didn’t work. Mavericks re-born minus the Lilly Langtry portrait, that’s the only difference. A few changes to decor, a bar shifting and new wall-paper borders in the bathroom, do not re-invent a restaurant! The food? Oh my! Charlottesville as a whole, needs to be shaken up about dining all the way around! Foodies? Where are they, REALLY??? Few and far between, if you ask me. If there were more of them around, people would not be left with their jaws hanging open, asking WHY, WHY did I just pay for that??? But then again, whose asking? To sum it up, dining out in Charlottesville can be hazardous to your health and psyche, let alone a total waste of your time and $$$!!!

yep, no question. However, I wouldn’t ever go to such a lame chain in the first place… What were you thinking?

  39. 31 Oct 2008 at 1:31 amBeen There... said:

We went to a child’s B’day party at the chain restaurant Cici’s Pizza and really didn’t want to indulge (although we really did want to) and on the way out of the Square, we said let’s try the Boat House…thought they had Sushi and fresh fish on the menu. Silly us! It’s no different now, than when it was Mavericks! A while ago we had looked on a “Boat House” website and thought the menu looked great, even if it was a chain. We now think it’s more a missing link and doubt that is part of the same Boat House restaurant we viewed online. It’s really too bad, because it’s a great space. Hungry, dying to eat mouthfuls of carbs and maybe transfat stuff, so opted for a NEW venue that maybe, could have, did not, have some thing new to offer! That’s it! Plain and simple. !

Forrest Lakes is now a suburb of Fairfax. It would take 45 sorority chicks from UVA dancing on the tables with thongs on to get me to go “out there”! In this economy to open a new restaurant is a very daunting task. Why not go to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut or take a bus with a bunch of old fuckers to Atlantic City and put 150 grand on black on the roulette table. You’d have a MUCH better chance of getting a return on your investment. On another kinder note, I hope they make money and am not wishing them ill will! :)

How bout another tapas bar. We are way short on those. Or perhaps open a casino on the James River in Scottsville. Classy!
