We love these rumors! Thank you birdie:
word among ex-michael’s bistro employees is that the other owner, not michael, is opening a new place with an interesting partner. good location too
Guesses? Space above Boheme/in Boheme, The Upstairs or old Milano space.

what happened to the upstairs?
The old Milano space doesn’t have a kitchen, so there would have to be a fairly significant remodel to put a full restaurant in there. The other spots all sound like good candidates for a new place.
I saw workers mililng about around Boheme late last week and have heard people in the know talk about a new restaurant being connected with some of the old Boheme people.
/Never thought I’d have restaurant gossip to share.
I always liked MB – cool staff, good beer, nice vibe.
Too bad the namesake owner is bat-shit crazy.
Looking forward to seeing what the other guy does.
What sort of a name is that? Scooby Doo saying hello? Re Tardo
@ I hope whatever he does he brings that bison burger with him. damn was that thing good.
I’m with @1, what happened to the Upstairs?
@7: The Escafé/Upstairs building got sold by the owner, I think I heard.
@7 thor’s the one who brought this up; why won’t he answer our question?
/hasn’t had steak in SO LONG.
on Saturday night, the Upstairs had a sign posted on the door that said it was closed for a private party. which leads me to believe it is open otherwise. wrong?
complete speculation on my part…
I own The Upstairs, Escafe and the building they are in. Escafe has been sold to a group of guys who hang out there a lot. They have posted a VA ABC license application form on the front door as required by the ABC laws. The transaction will close once their licenses are approved which should be around mid October. Escafe will not close prior to, during or after the transaction. It will continue to operate on as Escafe which has had four owners since it opened as Eastern Standard in the early 1980’s and Escafe in the mid 1990’s.
The Upstairs is open for business as usual and is not in any way associated with the Escafe sale nor is it for sale. We hosted a bachelor party on Thursday and wedding rehersal on Saturday so that is why we had a sign out front on those nights.
In addition the building is not involved in the Escafe sale nor is it for sale. The new owners of Escafe will be tenants in the first floor of the building.
Hope that clears up any rumors out there…
Oh, Hi Mark. Welcome to the internet!
thanks, mark. jeez, thor, for a god you’re not very omniscient.
Aaah so I was wrong in #5… it’s actually Scooby trying to say rainbow.
@14 And he would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for you darn pesky kids…and facts.
@6 MB still has the Bison burger on the menu. New chef Matt is a great guy. Things are getting back to “normal” up there. At least somewhat since Clive (of Boheme) isn’t temp. managing.
@17… is your box open yet?
That’s what I like about you Floozy. No beating around the “bush”. No small talk. You always go straight to the hot and sweaty point.
gross.
@19 Wow…I’m digging you too baby…. where have you been all my life?
@Thor: The Upstairs people already don’t like cVillain. Is it a good idea to start rumors about them closing?
CVILLAIN PARTY SAT. OCT. 25TH AT X LOUNGE! EVERYONE COME!
BTW, I wonder who made the reservation????

@22, why they hatin’?
@12
what did ever happen to Sean and Doug of Escafe/Eastern?
@26, @22
and why ARE they hatin’?
Seems like adequate cause for us to taunt them a second time…
They opened West Cafe in Portland
@28
that’s a nice happy ending. give them my best, they were always very good to me.
Otter if you were hangin’ around back in that day, you and i have had many drinks together, I’m sure, probably with 26 world.
warm fond greetings then to you and 26 world… been a while!!! i was the guy at the end of the bar, dazzled by nora and asking if the Ramblers knew any chords other than C-G-D, having staggered down from fluffy at fellini’s.
@12 – oh, snap – way to witty repartay – with da facts, yo!!
ooh, otter, barmaid named nora – it just can’t be the one i remember from way back… prolly some fresh faced chick
@31 I was a waitron, along with Jeremy C, Emily, Nova, Jonas, etc…..
loved fluffy from fellinis, good times.
/major headache just thinkin’ about it. yikes.
Did Asto from the Jetson’s get to name this restaurant?
i was “involved” with fellinis – fluffy is still there/there again????
oooo, what is fluffy at fellinis??
31,34: Cheers to you both. I miss that gang.
fluffy was magnificent—i haven’t seen her in years and years. she and carter for a long time ran the late-night at Fellini’s, during and after the reign of the Great but calumnizable Chief Gordon (don’t miss his jailhouse performance in the film DINER.).
Nora was the knockout blonde sophisticate dresser in a red convertible who waited at Eastern way-back. She’s still around town, i think owns a vintage clothing store somewhere? For a while, Ken owned escafe and Tokyo, i think, and there was a regular interchange between the two bars of very model-like thin sophisticated waitresses in close-fitting black dresses that set downtown a-swoon.
As with Miller’s and C&O of that time, half of these women, and bartenders, had PhDs or at least some advanced degree. A different sort of scene, to be sure.
@34
that crowd of staff was later, but all good people. Escafe produced some brilliant ones, anyhow—foremost the painter Jeremy Davies and before that the painter Steve Keene (google him, in NYC).
@39 Nora was also at Metropolitain back when it was in the now-Bizou space. And you’re right about the swooning — June, Satchi, etc., all the lovely ones could be found there.
I miss SK’s “shows” at X Gallery. I still have quite a few of his $2 paintings.
oooooo!! i forgot about the heavenly Satchi.
what a great bunch–hunter (f) and tracey and maggie and (j) quinn and dave matthews at Millers, too.
also have a ton of steve k.
@41 Ha! I was confused, at first, what a “bunch-hunter” was. Sounded rather lascivious.
Related to our recent UVA v. townies discussion, Tracey and Maggie were both UVA grads (in sororities, even) and were two of the best-known townies of that era.
sorry, dash not hyphen. hunter was also honors at UVA, i think.
And J. Quinn, in a frat.
Steve K was Princeton or Yale i think.
39: That reminded me of Tom Robbins <>! So great.
