somebody whispered in my ear…

that there is a new restaurant opening in downtown belmont. Have you seen all the moving around and renovation going on at what used to be Saxx Lounge?? No word on a name or opening date yet, but I’ve been told they will have live music on that beautiful stage there, as well as salsa dancing and a brand new kitchen to put out all sorts of tasty goodies.

Does anyone else know anything about this?

Sounds right. I know that place has been sorta for sale for a while. I also know that the previous owner was a little sick of the business. I didn’t know about any transaction, though. I hope they do continue to have live music, although they will still face the same grumpy grandama neighbor noise issues that they faced before, unless they put some serious thought into the accoustics in there.

Also, some draft beer taps would be nice.

Wonder if it could David Simsons of the C&O. He always wanted to open a little jazz club up. You know the kind that opens at 8 and is usually closed by midnight. Serve some simple fair. Leaning more toward the older crowd. To show off more local jazz groups. Maybe host a couple private events and what knots Wouldn’t that be nice?

christ it’d be nice to have live vocal jazz. does anyone remember that years back the American Jazz Hall of Fame was planning to buy the Paramount and open here? Then it was discovered that no matter how loudly Cville crows about having an amazing jazz scene, and however many times they played Best of Ella Fitzgerald in coffeeplaces, it turned out that only aaron binder and john d’earth and Jeff Decker ever played the stuff.

Cathy Compton of Straight-Punch-To-The-Crotch is the greatest jazz diva this town has ever known—for purity and elegance of vocalizing/stylizing–but she only did about three gigs in jazz. Steffie Nakasian was great, but not stylized enough, and Daphne D’earth was too stylized to actually include WORDS when singing the words to songs.

there was a great Hot Five group for a while, and i hear tell of a combo that does old popular stuff in upbeat swing style.

    please keep us posted!!!!

I hope they fix the place up so that it’s functional. I worked there one night last winter and it was a joke. Behind the bar, it wasn’t even set up right for making drinks (the two sinks were nowhere near each other and too small to rinse shakers in) and there wasn’t even a dishwasher, so all dirty glasses had to be taken over to LaTaza. It was like working in a bar replica.

anyone remember when upstairs at Vivace had a cigar-martini bar one night a week, and a stripped-down John D’Earth combo would play? that was soooo pleasant–sortof like Rick’s in Casablanca, a real treat. Ivy Inn used to do nice jazz outside under-the-oaks, amongst-the-boxwoods, with Kate (name forgotten) who was terrific trad-vocalist.

it’d be nice if the new jazz club:

    1) did vocal jazz that wasn’t f*cking cheesy
    2) didn’t serve phony non-martini martinis
    3) had a reasonable dress-code
    4) threw out loudmouth CC-bar idiots so you could hear the music.

@5 I think you mean Dawn Thompson, John D’earth’s wife, rather than Daphne, their daughter. She may have a lovely voice, as well, but I only remember Dawn singing with John.

@8 Daphne Dearth is a wonderful singer, but she is not the singer with the Miller’s band and the other John Dearth bands. I don’t want to get into any personal info about her, because she’s a long-time friend of mine, but 26 world is right, you’re thinking of Dawn Thompson, John’s wife and Daphne’s mother.

you’re right!! i have heard both sing though, pretty certain. no complaints about the very lovely voice, just their tendency in performances i saw to go with New York School jazz vocals—beyong SCAT and into post-minimalist weirdness and moans and stuff.

Cathy and Kate both sang straight-ahead with scat and stylizing but comprehensible as english. there was briefly another gal who did stuff at Bashir’s, but can’t say i enjoyed it much.

Kathy with a K, yes, is the one i was describing as a goddess and the greatest purest jazz diva Cville has ever known, even though she performed jazz only for a very short time.

The other one whose name i couldn’t remember earlier, who was magnificent and regrettably moved somewhere with her saxophonist boyfriend, played mostly at Ivy Inn, was i think Kate Scott. Anyone know her or know if she’s recorded/recording records?

We DO have local jazz groups!

Beside’s the D’earth/Decker group that plays Millers, there’s the Olivarez Trio. They play gypsy jazz at C&O on Tuesdays. There’s also the Baja Jazz Collective that plays on Sunday evenings at Fellini’s. And if you ever get a chance, go see the ACME Swing Mfg. Co. They don’t have a regular gig, but they’ve been playing pretty frequently around town. I think they’re playing Oct 21 at Bashir’s for the Charlottesville Jazz Society.

I’d love to see SAXX reopen as a regular jazz club. It would be a great outlet for these groups that often have trouble finding regular gigs.
