I was talking with someone from one of the 5th District campaigns (i.e. Goode or Perriello) and they offered to do an online questionnaire for cVillain readers. Here’s what we will do. Let us know in the comments what questions you want asked. If you like someone else’s question, put a @4 where 4 corresponds to the comment number to let us know you like it.
We’ll pick the best/most liked 10 and submit the same questiosn to each campaign, give them a week to respond and publish the answers on the site.

doesn’t this fall under our politics taboo?
#1: I don’t think that either candidate can reasonably be expected to answer that question Vanilla. Try again.
To each candidate: what will you do to make sure that college education remains affordable in Virginia?
I want to know why the Virg won’t even show up.
Is it appropriate for a public official to own a copy of the Qur’an, and if so, why did Thomas Jefferson’s copy, the copy on which Rep. Keith Ellison recently swore into Congress, stir up such staunch opposition among his fellow congressmen?
Pithier version: which specific religions are sanctioned in the public sphere by the Constitution?
If you both did a drinking contest, who do you think would win, and why?
Why should I vote for you?
#5
Jefferson also owned a copy of the Bible from which he cut and marked out every reference to anything magical or miraculous or that was God intervening in the affairs of men or that required surpassing belief or that suggested a moral edict. This was often cited as evidence that TJ was an atheist or simply a deist without any actual Christian belief. Muslims beileve Jesus was just a man I think. Jefferson would probably go along with that.
#8: I don’t see your question to the candidates in there.
Which candidate understands Virginia to be a Commonwealth not a plutocracy?
Which of you has an authentic Southern accent or went to public schools in Virginia?
#9
I was trying to help out #5. That’s why I prefaced my remarks with “#5″.
I haven’t learned to be as rigidly topical as the rest of you yet.
To paraphrase Pink Panther: “I guess that made you my bitch, Snowflake”.
#11: Sorry. I was being a bit snide, as I deemed my posed question to be complete as I posed it and not in need of anyone to pick its nit with some additional historical anecdote regarding Thomas Jefferson.
Regardless, you seem to be new to the party, and as such, welcome! PB&J and boxed wine are in the kitchen. Be advised: they’re quite historical.
/um, actually, they’re just really old; tough times ’round here.
@12: Huh?
#13
I was being snide too, no harm intended. You are impressive intellectually, much as Pink Panther is impressive pop-culturally. I wasn’t picking a fight, just trying to be funny. Your question was perfect, but I sought to expand its scope and defend the use of the Qu’ran by demonstrating that the Founders are often used by the Right as Sky Pilots for the Bible, whereas in addition to supplying the Qu’ran TJ was critical of the Bible, offering a more secular understanding of it.
#14
I was trying to show my respect for your appreciation of hip-hop language, by flattering you through imitation while bitch-slapping Stanley for fun.
More topically.
Candidates: In my mind the single most important political cultural and social text of Southern identity is I’ll Take My Stand (by Twelve Southerners). Have either of you read it, if not why the hell not, where do you stand on it, and how if you understand its import can you restore in your political actions the beliefs of those authors to the culture of Virginia and prevent The Commonwealth from becoming entirely Northern Virginia or New Jersey?
Your question was perfect, but I sought to expand its scope and defend the use of the Qu’ran by demonstrating that the Founders are often used by the Right as Sky Pilots for the Bible
I wasn’t trying to overplay my hand, given this story.
#17
You were right to understate it, as you will be taken seriously.
I gave the extreme, that you were aware of but wisely did not use, because I am nobody on this blog and reading past posts you are a major force.
I am nobody on this blog
You must be the somebody you wish to see on the blog.
To each candidate: Recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans can’t find the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?
#19
is that Ghandi?
21: Uh, sort of. And a bit of a running joke ’round here. Or it used to be.
BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THAT. Where are all the questions for the pols?
THAT’S RIGHT.
# 22, 23
# 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 16, 20. Open your eyes you myopic twats.
I’d like to know how Congressman Goode defends his repeated use of the term “Anchor Babies” without being denounced for what amounts to overt, public racism.
Also, @5, @20.
#25
this is the guy to watch, now. cool website too.
tell your friends about this thread.. i think we need more questions
did we refrain from talking politik so long that now we forget how to talk politik?
/not a question fer the pols
1. I would want to ask Virgil Goode how he reconciles his public education platform listed on his official site (increased spending on special education by the federal government, for example) with his voting record over the years, which reflects a distinctly anti-public education stance, including a vote that would have abolished the federal Department of Education altogether. How, specifically, does he feel that both the U.S. Government and Virginia should spend its federal dollars on public education, and how would he specifically reform/rewrite the No Child Left Behind Act?
2. Also, given that Goode said the following in a letter to his constituents with regard to Keith Ellison: “When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran.” — I would like him to explain in explicit detail the role he believes that religion should play in government, and whether “the Virgil Goode position on immigration” would restrict Muslims from elected office.
To both candidates: do you take your tartare with or without aioli? And if it’s with aioli, please describe in detail the exact method of preparation. Thank you for your time.
@29: Dang. That’s what I was gonna ask. Kidding. Thanks for bringing up #2. I totally forgot about that letter incident. Now I know who I will vote for.
@30: Snicker.
Agree or disagree with the following statement:
“I fear that radical Muslims who want to control the Middle East and ultimately the whorl would love to see ‘In God We Trust’ stricken from our money and replaced with ‘In Moo-ham-id We Trust.’”
The debate raged a few years ago to revert Charlottesville to Town status under the law, which would make it a part of Albemarle County with shared taxes and uniform entitlements. The plan was abandonned because in part at that time Cville took in more tax-dollars from business than the county did from business/property.
Given the mass exodus to the county and greater balance of tax revenues from business incentives, the situation is now seemingly reversed and progressing. Would you support a renewed initiative to incorporate Charlottesville and UVA into the County of Albemarle to better leverage highway funds, school funds, infrastructural funds, etc. by accepting them to a single entity and distributing them from a single entity.
26 World, esteemed veteran, is clearly more eloquent in these matters than I. Kudos.
(Thanks for the praise, maestus. That website continues to be haaaaard work.)
I know it’s not the same question, but:
For Perriello: As a Roman Catholic, you are taught that abortion is a sin, and cannot morally be defended. In recent weeks, several high-profile Catholic Democratic politicians (Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden) have been chastised by church leaders over controversial statements in defense of their pro-choice policies, specifically when human life begins and when human rights are obtained. Do you support these leaders in their stances in opposition to your church, or do you also condemn the positions advanced by these Democratic leaders in regards to abortion?
For Goode: You’ve been in congress for 12 years now. Congressional approval ratings hover around 10% Over your time in office, people have grown more frustrated with the inaction, incompetence, ineptitude, and inability of congress. The financial system has been threatened, prices have gone up across the board, and people remain unhappy. Yet the re-election rate for the House has hovered around 97% since you’ve been in office. Why shouldn’t all the incumbents be voted out (or have term limits), and have new representatives be put into office? Why should we re-elect the same people, cycle after cycle, when it seems like you incumbents can’t get anything meaningful done?
awww, lulu is here, stanley is here. nice. politics, ya’ll. it brings us out.
Wow…not until this very moment did I realise I haven’t been thinking of myself as a Virginian now and have completely disregarded local and state politics.
/seriously feeling sheepish and will feverishly work to getting some background on said candidates.
@10 - I did
bbt, knowledge up…
@39 No shit lol
And maybe the lack of posting is that people are spent from the debate… It was coitus cerebellum (a mind f*ck)…
/doesn’t know why all of sudden censoring self…
do Cvillains ever go to movies together? We should all go see Religulous
#35 are fantastic questions for both candidates. Well done.
@33 interesting question. but wouldn’t that be a deal for the county and the city to work out? or state government? i don’t think congress would have anything to do with it.
@42: Thanks!
1) If’n I vote for you, how do I know if my vote was counted, and counted correctly?
2) If’n I have no proof my vote counted, why bother at all?
I’ll take anyone’s response, really.
@46 don’t vote, it’s obviously too stressful
@47 What’s with the jackass response? I think it’s a real concern that our votes ought to matter in this great democracy. Why don’t politicians and people talk about the accountability of OUR votes in OUR country?
I think it’s a huge concern, given the election-deciding fraud that was perpetrated in the last two presidential races. I think it would be great to ask both candidates about election reform policies.
