Sign of Our Times Part 5: WalMart & Lexis Nexis

Birdie sends this rumor in…

LexisNexis has given a pile of employees 3 months notice as of last Monday—to be outsourced to India in February of 2009 as a permanent move.

Also, WalMart WILL be closing in Charlottesville—they don’t even list it as a location option on their website anymore [we checked, they do]. The question is…WHEN?

We aren’t so sure about the WalMart rumor, but you never know.

i think the part about lexus isn’t quite accurate. it was SNL that was supposed to outsource a huge number of jobs/staff to India in March or so. Lexus is definitely faltering and flailing and is a godawful company with zero commitment to its staff, and is definitely sacking people as in the rumor, and has been shedding material assets and people left and right all year (2008) but to the recent spate of sackings for early 2009, it’s my impression from rumors that they are sackings for corporate greed/bad-faith/re-organization and divestiture and not sackings for India-bound work.

the WalMart rumor is at least partially true as they’re opening a new mega-store up at the corner of 29 and 33 in Ruckersville, next to the new Lowe’s, which is almost finished.

wouldn’t be at all surprised if the LN rumor was true as well, they’re in serious trouble right now, or have been for the last 3 or 4 months.

Wal-Mart’s third quarter earnings report is supposed to come out tomorrow morning, but everyone is expecting it to be one of the few bright spots in the economy recently. So I wouldn’t expect then to be closing stores. That being said, if they every build the Super Wal-Mart in Culpepper like they are supposed to, I wouldn’t be surprised if ours closed.

I hope Wal-Mart closes, so all the mom and pop stores on the downtown mall that sell cheap t-shirts, bulk cereal, plastic furniture and lead-tainted toys can return to prosperity.

Isn’t Walmart is opening a Supercenter in Ruckersville (2010 according to what I’ve seen published)? And there’s a Supercenter one opening soon in Zion’s Crossroads too. So the folks from Greene/Forest Lakes head to Ruckersville, the folks from Fluvanna stay there. Crozet shoppers can get to Waynesboro as easily as they get to 29 North. I don’t know how much of a need exists for Walmart in Albemarle with all those other options.

    Renee said:

I’ve been told by more than one local business owner that Wal-Mart has already sold their building to Jim Price and is having to lease it back for several tens of thousands dollars a month. They were planning to close the Cville location much sooner because the store in Ruckersville at 29/33 was supposed to be opened much sooner; however construction has been pushed back due to the economy so they are keeping the Cville store open longer. Once the Ruckersville location is opened the Cville one will be closed, but the projected date for that last I heard was late 2009 or early 2010.

    Wingnut said:

WalMart’s Ruckersville plans were also delayed significantly when their original site (across 607 from the Sheetz) fell through and they had to settle for the site at 29/33, or at least that’s what the scoop was up in my parts. apparently the owner of the land at 607/29 did all the clearing and site prep and then couldn’t come to terms with WalMart (something about lease/buy options) and was left holding the bag for all the work.

Renee, you really think that a GM dealerships needs to expand from a place they already own. Seems unlikely. There might not even be a dealership soon. My bets on Wal-Mart.

i wouldn’t be surprised if Jim Price wanted to consolidate all their lots in one area, so buying the WalMart lot makes sense in that way. we’ll soon have two motor miles in C’ville, which is unfortunate.

also, have you seen how crowded the GM/Isuzu/Hyundai lot is? having the WalMart space would give them a lot more breathing room.

really? that’s interesting (and preferred). when the story first came out it was all about it being a Lowe’s. our Lowe’s SUCKS and needs some competition to sharpen their game. i only wish the one in Ruckersville was going to be an HD as originally rumored.

As a poor college student, I also kind of like Wal-mart; I go there to buy basics like black work shirts, dog food, soda, etc. etc. BUT does anyone else get really freaked out by the life size Ronald McDonald sitting in there outside the McDonald’s in Wal-mart? I can’t even look at it, I have to walk really fast when I go in so I don’t look directly into its burning devilish eyes.

This is for all who dont have the facts or even have the first idea on how to get it. The Wal-mart coming to Ruckersville, Va will start being built in April 2009. For the one in Charolettesville it is not closing in fact it is being remodeled and it is going to be getting bigger. Going towards the car lot everyone is talking about. Wal-mart is not in the hurt due to ecomony like most people think. All these facts are straight from the wal-mart head quarters. Get the facts and a life instead on living on stupid gossip. To each there own on where people want to shop!
