Not sure about this rumor or not (sounds confirmed?), but given the lack of a contract extension on Al Groh, this has some weight.
Here is the twitter post from JoshCVT:
Tagged as: al groh, approved, buyout, College, football, UVA, VirginiaWKAV radio in Charlottesville reporting UVa Board of VIsitors has approved $6M buyout of Al Groh if athletic department wishes to fire him.

Athletic Director Craig Littlepage, during a meeting with Al Groh today, asked Groh to fire a number of coaches including his son, Offensive Coordinator Mike Groh. Al Groh refused and the conversation got heated. No word yet whether or not they will buy out the rest of Groh’s contract, but if he is refusing to do what Littlepage is asking, I would expect him to be gone.
ESPN Radio has been talking about this for the last couple hours. Reportedly, Al Groh was asked to remove Mike as OC and a few other staff members and he refused. So now Littlepage is looking into getting rid of them all.
ESPN Radio is saying this is from a VERY reputable source inside the athletics department that they use regularly, but I’m always hesitant to believe stuff like this.
@1 Man, I need to stop proofreading my posts before posting. I keep getting beaten to the punch.
Albert is gone, Book it.
And let us not forget Groh also set the bar for multi-cultural sensitivity and stilled our fear of flying after 9/11 when he remarked, “I’m not saying this to make light of it by any means, but I’m not planning on having Arabs in the traveling party, so therefore I think probably that the threat of our being hijacked is pretty remote.”
Confirmed from two reliable sources within UVa on this end.
UVA loves to extend contracts and then buy them out. Ideal use of sugar daddy cash. Hoos your sugar daddy?
But wait! The Regress claims to have better sources, and claims that the reports of a buyout are WRONG.
Ha! More anonymous sources. We’ll see whose anonymous-source mojo is stronger, I guess. Or maybe both are right: they approved a buyout, but then decided not to do it.
The article also reports that Coach Groh is making $2 million a year, which strikes me as deeply absurd.
Sorry, I forgot the link: http://www.dailyprogress.com/cdp/news/local/article/sources_groh_to_return_as_coach/32286/ .
The $2,000,000 is absurd, but it is also correct. Al Groh’s not going anywhere this year. Mike is a different story, however. Of course, I’m just speculating here about who’s staying and going. I haven’t bothered checking with my sources. Who needs to do that? That’s almost like being responsible!
You can’t buy off Footbal Jesus! (sarcasm)
@10: No tag needed, clearly that was sarcasm.
The local ESPN Radio has reported this correctly from the beginning. Mike Groh just resigned. The monies in place, like they said, gave littlepage the gaul to demand mike to get out.
