Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company Open

We got a sneak peek at the new Nelson County brewery in August, and its now open for all of our fermented pursuits.  So what has taken so long?  C-VILLE spoke to the Master Brewer, Jason Oliver at length, and found out Jason was lost in translation when he had to put the brewery equipment together:

The equipment is state-of-the-art stuff—a German-designed Ziemmann 10HL 4-vessel decoction or infusion brewery—but the system originally was built in Japan for a Tokyo-based brewery and purchased from an international purveyor of used brewery equipment, hence all the Kanji characters.

If he puts as much effort into his beer as this k’nex project, we are in for a real treat.  Here is the current beer list:

  • Gold Leaf Lager:Bavarian-style Helles Lager. This gold lager is light to medium in body, with a crisp refreshing finish. This style of beer is the everyday beer of Bavaria. 11 degrees plato, 18 IBU’s, 4.5 % alcohol by volume.
  • Vienna Lager: Vienna-style Lager. This amber colored lager is medium in body with a finish that has hints of caramel and toasted nuts. This beer is brewed with four different malts resulting in its smooth malty flavor. 12 degrees plato, 20 IBU’s, 4.9% alcohol by volume.
  • Wintergreen Weiss: Bavarian-style Hefeweizen. This traditional Bavarian-style wheat beer is hazy gold in color, with a lively fruity finish that has hints of clove and banana. This is the beer that started the odyssey that led to the creation of Devils Backbone Brewing Company. During a ski trip to the Alps, DBBC founder Steve Crandall discovered and fell in love with Hefeweizen. Now we bring Hefeweizen to the Blue Ridge. 11.8 degrees plato, 13 IBU’s, 4.8% alcohol by volume.
  • Eight Point IPA: American-style India Pale Ale. This pale bronze beer is medium in body with intense hop flavor and aroma. Our IPA is brewed in the style of the “west coast” with robust hop character coming from American grown varieties of hops. IPA’s are amongst the most popular craft brewed beers as they have moderate strength and tons of flavor. This is not your Grandfathers beer! 14 degrees plato, 50 IBU’s, 6% alcohol by volume.
  • Black Rock Oatmeal Stout: English style stout
  • Five Apostles: Belgian Style saison (sweet)
  • Ale of Fergus: Scottish style brown ale
  • several rotating beers: Dark, belgian, seasonal and guest beers

Asides from beer they also serve food with an emphasis on local ingredients.  cocoNUT, pack your bags.  We are sending you off to Wintergreen, and we are all coming along.

Prost!

i haven’t yet been, myself, but have spoken with a Blue Mountain regular who went on their opening night. he said that it was VERY good. didn’t comment on specific beers, but that the whole experience was excellent.

apparently they poured/sold over 500 pints the first day.

Looks very interesting; that they have Bud Light on draft is a bit odd.

I went there last Friday. Great atmosphere. Had the sampler and a pint of Eight Point and Black Rock, these two being my favorite. I rec. the sampler to start ($5) for 3 oz of each beer to decide what you like. I thought overall the whole line was a bit soft for my taste, but I expect micros to have some bite. Food was excelent!! Staff excellent. Just a note, for those that have issues with stuffed animals this is not the place for you.

In addition they do have a full bar and a couple guest taps, as well as your regular bottled beer, but don’t shame the place by ordering from this.

    Hey guys,

Can’t say enough about DBBC-brews are outstanding. The Heffewisen and 8 point IPA are top self with good depth and caracter. The rustic lodge feel is overdue for this area. Can’t wait for a return visit.

My husband and I pulled in on a Friday night after snowboarding at Wintergreen. The place was packed. We went to the bar, instead of waiting for a table, and happened to pull up next to Jason, the brewmaster. It was a great evening to taste all 6 of their brews and hear about them from their creator. Their flight of all 6 along with the info sheet and Jason’s commentary was both tasty and interesting. I liked all but 1 and learned it was the style of yeast that produced the quality I didn’t like. The Gold Leaf Lager and the hefeweiizen were my two personal favs. Good appetizers too. Beautiful building and materials. Overall, worth a drive.
