Charlottesville Indian Restaurants in War of Words?

Sent in by a birdie..

I’d like to see coverage of the rivalry between Milan and Royal Indian. The owner of the latter was a chef of the former until some kind of dispute sent them separate ways. Now there is a fierce competition — and maybe a hatred — between the two, leading to all kinds of shows of animosity, including very obvious “fake” reviews on charlottesville-dining.com for both. Some of them make veiled but clear references to the other. I tried to make a point about this in a review there, saying that you can’t trust all the comments, but of course it was edited out.

More broadly, this is reminiscent of the Mas affair. Lots of big restaurant fish fighting for their rights in this small Charlottesville pond. Funny stuff.

Few comments after the break…

One comment on Milan on June 6 by ravibha:

If you are really looking for good Indian food, never ever visit this place. Chefs in Milan must know that Biryani is not just mixture of rice and chili powder. If you guys cannot make it put it out of your menu. The Biryani we had in Milan is the worst I have ever had. I thought it would be good considering the rocket high prices they charge. Looks like I can’t afford to pay my phone bill this month. I know this review sounds a little harsh. But there is one positive thing that came out of this trip. I thought Angel Falls, one of the seven wonders of the world was located in Venezuela. But when I entered the bathroom of Milan, lo and behold I see the waterfall in the urinal. So I guess paying 60 bucks is worth it to see a wonder of the world. But considering I wanted dinner, things didn’t work out. If you ever decide to try that green-looking thing right before you leave the place of wonders think twice, “barishop” didn’t taste good but I guess that was the only possible conclusion of the evening. So, I am gonna take my burnt palete back home to watch TV.

I think Royal doesn’t have cook, they are doing timepass by making food with the help of online Recipes..
Royal must hire a cook to make this place running…

Worst food, Worst Place, Worst Service i ever had..

Isn’t Milan the one where the owner was taking the tips from the waitstaff and pocketing it?

Also, as astonishing as the Angel Falls are, they are NOT one of the 7 wonders of the world.

    Mr. 434 baby:

You are correct. There was a lawsuit last January. As the C-VILLE reports:

Sandeep Dias filed suit against his former employer, Milan Restaurant, on January 9, seeking an award of monetary damages and declaratory relief on behalf of himself and all others similarly situated. In his complaint, filed by the Virginia Legal Aid Justice Center, Dias charges that the Indian restaurant, specifically owner Charanjeet Ghotra, failed to pay proper minimum wage by retaining tips left by patrons for the waitstaff, as well as failing to pay proper overtime wages, in violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

I wonder how it turned out.
