Thanks to a birdie who is also an internet detective, not only will Urban Outfitters come to Charlottesville, but so will the parent company’s sister store, Anthropologie.
The Murray Costello Construction Company website lists the following places for new stores on its website:
Upcoming Company Projects
* Anthropologie – Ridgeland, MS
* Anthropologie – Greensboro, NC
* Anthropologie – Charlottesville, VA
* Anthropologie – Aventura, FL
* Anthropologie – Alpharetta, GA* Urban Outfitters – Nashville, TN
* Urban Outfitters – Charlottesville, VA
* Urban Outfitters – South Bend, IN
Now, is this in the same space as Urban Outfitters?

Brilliant move. Another overpriced boutique in town in the midst of the longest running economic downturn since the Great Depression. Who runs this parent company? Marie Antoinette?
They are moving to Barracks Road Shopping Center, I natural location for that sort of thing.
rumor had it recently - around some of the local boutiques - that anthro is going to move into the hollywood video space in the north wing of barracks.
@1 Actually, the guy who runs the company is a much, much bigger douche:

The article is a little sensational, but when I first read it, it fascinated me so I looked into their claims, and for the most part, its all true.
For example:
Hmmm. so we shouldn’t shop at UO or antrhopologie b/c their clothes are made in India in maybe not the most desirable conditions, yet it’s ok to go eat at Five Guys where they tell you the beef is neither organic nor free-range but from various unnamed distributors.
Seems to me like it’s silly to worry about boycotting certain stores because the owner is a douche or they steal ideas but no worries about your food and where it comes from.
@6 if we want to kill ourselves by eating crap,that’s totally different from killing indians.
@6, you’re making sense. Stop it.
Well at least I know where my spuds are coming from.
I reserve the right to boycott Wal-Mart but shop at Target. I try to buy local especially with food, but still end up at Harris Teeter/Whole Foods to supplement what I can’t get from local producers. I stay away from chain restaurants, except for ones that I like. Am I irrational and inconsistent in my choices? Of course. The key thing is I don’t tell other people to do what I do (except my family of course). Life’s too short for dogmatic adherence to the party line of correctness.
@7 how about if we kill ourselves by eating crappy indians?
I stay away from chain restaurants, except for ones that I like
Not me - I love the chain restaurants I hate!
Anthropologie is expensive
@13, it will fit right in with all the other expensive places here.
And it was reasonably well-lit–again, for India[sic]
Glowsticks. I bet it was fucking glowsticks. No wonder they are having a population explosion over there.
What the fuck kind of name is Anthropologie? What do they sell? Clothes made by primitive cultures? Fossils? Khaki vests and pith helmets?
They have mammoth discounts.
And you can join their club.
They cave in if you ask for a refund even with no receipt.
@16 - The culture of their socialized adornment gift circles represents a symbolic association of exchange, social hierarchy and deep meaning.
Interesting timing as I am reading “A fine Balance” by Rohinton Minstry. India has gone a long way with a long way to go. Anyway, the book does provide an argument both ways as to if we are helping or hurting the workers in such settings. I suspect these workers would be mighty pissed to lose their jobs for our moral outrage. Yet they deserve more than they receive.
FWIW, just finished “Someone Knows my Name” a vague parallel to “Memoirs of a Geisha” in that is it written by a male with a female protagonist in a setting that the author really can have only a glancing familiarity, yet does so with such dexterity that one has to say out loud, “Lawrence is a males name…”
There are times that I’m draw to them, but I usually shake myself out of my trance and walk out. There are some nice things, but a lot of junk that’s way overpriced. Why anyone pays for their furniture boggles my mind. It’s garbage.
The founder isn’t just an eccentric…heck, I like eccentrics. He’s a wack job. I can picture him laughing with distain as his sales numbers come in.
I like a lot of their stuff, if it goes on sale
I just find it more interesting than gap or Express, which charges pretty much the same prices for clothing that is just boring. Every company outsources and has wacky policies, so investigating every place that I shop on some sort of moral crusade seems like a waste of time to me.
I will definitely be shopping at Anthropologie. The first one I ever went to was in Philly. They have unique
stuff most of the time. I can’t wait for the GRAND OPENING!
FYI - they are a company based out of Philly
