
The City of Charlottesville announced that it will have a supporting role in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration next Sunday the 18th with Assistant City Manager Maurice Jones as a Master of Ceremonies as well as members of City Council. The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee is sponsoring the event, Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School. The celebration begins at 4 p.m. and the public is invited and encouraged to attend. Proceeds from this event will be donated to the Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Award will also be presented at this year’s celebration. The award goes to a resident of the greater Charlottesville area who has demonstrated Dr. King’s commitment to the civil rights of all people and to improving understanding between peoples of different races and ethnic backgrounds. The diverse program will include inspirational speakers and music.
