Do you know a child who just loves books? How about a child who loves telling stories? Or one who can’t keep their hands off of the crayons or magic markers? WHTJ Charlottesville PBS has the perfect opportunity for these imaginative youngsters: The chance to create their very own books—both the story and illustrations—as part of WHTJ Charlottesville PBS’s 15th Annual “READING RAINBOW Young Writers & Illustrators Contest.”
The entry process is now underway for WHTJ’s “READING RAINBOW Young Writers & Illustrators Contest,” the station’s annual local contest where children from kindergarten through third grade write and illustrate their own stories. Youngsters can participate by creating their book at home, or teachers can incorporate the contest into their classroom curriculum.
To request an entry form and guidelines, please contact Erin James at 434.295.7671 or ejames@whtj.org. The entry form and guidelines can also be downloaded at www.whtj.org. The deadline for entries is February 27, 2009.
Charlottesville-area judges will review the local stories and look for originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of copy and illustrations. Entries will be grouped by grade level. First-place stories from the WHTJ Charlottesville PBS contest will be entered in the national READING RAINBOW Young Writers & Illustrators Contest, along with winners from other public television stations across the country.
All contest participants, their friends and families, and the general public, are invited to the WHTJ’s READING RAINBOW Young Writers & Illustrators Contest celebration to be held on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Carver Recreation Center. At the celebration every student who entered the contest will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by LeVar Burton. The contest celebration is part of the Virginia Festival of the Book’s Family StoryFest. Winners will also have the chance to read their stories aloud.
Now in its 25th season, READING RAINBOW has received international acclaim, garnering more than 150 awards, including 20 Emmys (eight for “Outstanding Children’s Series”), a prestigious Peabody, eight CINE Golden Eagles, seven Parent’s Choice Awards, and three international Prix Jeunesse Awards. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) has twice honored LeVar Burton for his role on READING RAINBOW with their Image Award.
