We just got word that the 12th Street Ale House, which replaced Northern Exposure and the short-lived Spry’s, has finally opened. The former team from Michael’s Bistro recreates what we loved about the Bistro, 14 beers on tap, 30 to 40 bottles and a similar menu. Anyone know if they are going to carry all the Belgiums again? The decor looks promising. We’ll be headed there this weekend. Let us know how it is if you’ve been.

Has anyone had a chance to see/hear/know what the menu will be? I know that Chuck is planning to bring some of his dishes from his time at Michael’s Bistro but I’m not at all sure which of those nor what else he’ll add. I’m quite excited about this place; Chuck always turned out food I liked to eat.
Of course, I’ll go by and see the menu for myself at some point soon, but heck, what else are the internets for?
if someone can gank a menu and scan it and send it in, we’ll publish it!
I’ve always loved the vittles at Michael’s Bistro. Plus I’m a huge beer snob. I can’t wait.
Chuck Rocks! Love that guy! Isn’t this another Capshaw backed operation?
I ate there on tuesday night.
The menu is almost the exact same as Michaels Bistro. I couldn’t pick out any differences, though i don’t go to Michales Bistro to often.
The food:
The prices are reasonable, with larger portions then Michaels Bistro. They had just opened, and didn’t have the preparation of the food down quite yet, so we all thought the food was better at Michaels Bistro. My wife’s “medium” Buffalo Burger came out raw and cold in the middle. The chef did come out and appoligize and gave offered to give her something else for free.
The beer:
They have a great selection, they only have the bottled beer in the menu and the taps are written on the wall over the bar, which is hard to read from most tables. Their bottled menu is rather extensive and varied at reasonable prices. Their taps are pretty straight forward, nothing i hadn’t had before, but the beers are big and very good prices. I got a 20 oz burbon barrel porter for $4, which is $5-6 for 16 oz most other places around town. They did have a cider on tap, which my wife appriciated.
The atmosphere isn’t bad, but it is a big space that needs a lot of people to feel full. So basically i will check back in a month or so to see if the menu has changed, if not i will go to Micheals Bistro for dinner and 12th street for beers.
you could at least get the name of the place right in the headline.
This is not a picture of 12th St Tap House either….
at all.
been there & feels a like a comfy old shoe that is brand new again!
Yeah it’s Tap House.
O snap. Truth in reporting eh?
just had lunch there – fried chicken sandwich was good, very berry house dressing on the greens was not my taste . . not sure if it’s all they have. was reasonably priced and i like that they have the sneaky parking in the garage behind kanes.
Is the place smoke free? Or another U-area smoky hell?
Went there for lunch today with some friends and it was really good. I had the curry chicken salad, creamy spinach soup, and a 20 oz. pint of the Hobgoblin. I’ll be back!
@12 – I’m guessing it’s smoke free, thought I’m not positive. Seems to be the kind of joint that would be smoke free.
@11 – What car were you driving? There were 1 or 2 next to the Jeep I came in…
DailyProgress (via twitter) saw evidence of smoking the other evening. Net result…won’t get a drop of my cash which is dying to resurrect our economy.
DailyProgress saw evidence of smoking the other evening
Ha! Like what? A burnt match? Ashtray? Patron dying of cancer on the floor near the back? Phlegm buckets? Damn. You cant get anything past those DP slueths! I think they should continue to report on such minute details, I mean, thats really the best compromise for everyone.
Actually, it was just a visit from Michael Phelps
Was there last friday. The food looked carbon copy like Michael’s Bistro. Beers are impressively large.
@14 It seems to me like the kind of place where they allow smoking at the bar but not at the tables. Which is the same as allowing smoking everywhere, really. I’m with Outskirts Guy on this one.
anyone know if they have (or plan to have) live music.
I was going to go, but not anymore. No big deal, plenty of nonsmoking joints to buy good beer. Some BBQ and Allagash Triple just down the road works.
I have been 2 times in a week, 20oz beers for 4 bucks across the board, lots of bottle beers. same bistro menu from along the years. food is well priced, smoking after dinner is done( which suits me just fine). DIG IT
the beers are $4 AFTER TAX if anyone is wondering
there will indeed be live music there
The Taphouse is non smoking until after 10pm. FYI
The food is excellent and the 20 oz beers rock. I asked and they will soon have at least 2 Belgian beers on tap at all times. Smoking is allowed only after 10 pm. If they restrict the smoking to the bar area, then the 2 front rooms would always be pretty much smoke free during live music.
@6 – hard to imagine why you thought that the food was better at the bistro. It is pretty much the same kitchen staff (Chuck, Mo, and Rene) and a much nicer kitchen. I suspect that the bistro will be changing their menu in the very near future.
Wow, went there tonight. Like it a lot. Beer selection rocks my face off.
Stone beer dinner on February 18th !
Ah ha – the smoking after 10 pm now makes sense – I saw people going outside for a smoke but in the later evening people were smoking at the tables and the bar. I also agree that the beer on tap list is hard to see and the server didn’t know the selections. The prices were reasonable and there was a varied selection of food – nice beer glasses (are they 20 ounces?). The Scandinavian decor (blond wood & the tables and chairs in the front) makes me think Coran and Chuck went to Ikea!!!! I will go back there again.
@31 Yes John, the beer glasses are 20 oz.
A correction to my earlier post: The Stone beer dinner will be postponed until early March. Stone is promising to bring in some limited release beers that will not be available by the 18th as originally planned. I agree that the tap beer selections are hard to see on the chalkboard. Not just from across the room, but at the bar too because the bartender’s gate is usually in the up position which completely blocks the left hand side of the board. They should print up the draft beer menu and have them available. As for the front, it sure looks better than Northern Exposure with the rooftop staircase removed. It needs some additional signage either on the front, or painted on the white side facing the hospital.
I don’t smoke, but think anyone who gets their panties in a twist about a little cigarette smoke is a p*ssie.
Now you’re a cat abuser?
Is that pronounced like B*Witched?
More like N*Sync.
It’s PUSSY dammit. It’s not a bad word.
@37 – You jarred this loose out of my brain bank.
/very very short clip from a great great movie.
I lovvvvvvvvve that movie.
@32 – The signage for the front and side of the building is awaiting approval from the B.A.R.
I hate the word “signage”.
*shudder*
I hate the word “colonoscopy”.
/Or is that the feeling of one?
//Look ma, I’m on tv!
Just ate dinner there. The service is excellent, beer selection fantastic, food was really disappointing, I’m sorry to say. Avoid the “Nicoise salad.” Next time I will go there to drink only, and I’m sure I’ll leave happy.
just had a few after-dinner drinks there. they’ve definitely improved the interior. much more open and inviting now. and $4 for a 20oz guinness? i think 12th street may become my new favorite bar.
Everytime I tried to go here this weekend they were closed. F you, 12th st Tap House.
PS Your sign says “SUNDAY BRUNCH ALL DAY”. Lies!
Shen… it was open. We were all hiding on the floor behind the sofa.
SRSLY every time me and D tried to go there, we got turned away. Saturday we went for lunch cuz the ad says they’re open from 11am to 2am and they were like, “We don’t serve food till 5″. Sunday we went for the “All Day Brunch” around 4:30 and then they were like, “Brunch till 4, we’re closed.”
!@#$%$#!
Apparently they ran out of food this past Sunday for brunch and had to close up early. I’m sure that will be remedied soon.
We went this past Friday. Everyone’s food came out hot and was satisfactory, especially for the price. I had the Old Rasputin on tap…amazing beer, fantastic stout that’s 9% ABV, and came out to $4.55 for a 20 oz glass. That’s hard to beat!!!! I’ll definitely be going back.
