Playing Hookey for the NCAA Tournament?

A birdie asks…

If someone was going to skip work next Friday to watch the NCAA tournament all day, what is the best place in C-ville to do that?

HOme. La-z-boy. DVR. Nap. Wake up and watch more and skip commercials. Walk dog and catch up again. Take a run and shower. Catch up again. Grill some steak and crack a Southern Tier Imperial Gemini. La-z-boy.

If weather sucks start fire early. Ignore phone calls and turn off cell phone.

I like Wild Wings Cafe. That’s where I watch college football every Saturday in the fall. I haven’t really been to the other sports bars, but people that have tell me that Wild Wings Cafe is the best.

The wost sports bar I’ve ever been to is BW3 in Barracks Road. Terrible service, horrible, awful food. No real plates only paper plates which is wonderful for the environment. The best sports bar I’ve ever been to was The Lumberyard in Des Moines, Iowa. My favorite place to watch a game here in Charlottesville doesn’t exist cause there is none. Zinc is nice but the chairs are awfully uncomfortable to sit for three hours.

thanks for the vote of confidence, altought we don’t consider ourself a sports bar i would claim the title of non tradionnal sports venue, we primarely broadcast euro sports such as soccer and rugby, as for march madness my bracket is filled and it’s gonna be on the big screen all tournament long. As for the sitting situation i’m glad you point it out and we will look into more comfortable seatings in the future.

Best place I have ever been is the lazy boy recliners at the ESPN Zone in Vegas. All the screens, drinks, good service and a sports betting parlor.

In Charlottesville I been in houses that are better places to watch sports than most bars in this area. BW3’s is probably the best and very mediocre. I have heard that Eurocup at Shebeen was a good place.

Yeah, Shebeen is gud too. BW3s and WWC are too chock full o’ rednecks.

I wish beer run stayed open later and had TVs. I think it would be a good place to watch some March Madness.

PS-I don’t mind going to Chili’s to watch whatever sports is on because a) its on my meal plan b) they have an amazing happy hour deal for food/drink and c) you can smoke in the bar area. And there are several TV’s in the bar area. I see no difference in it and BW3s or WWC, just that it closes earlier.

Dave Leitao Resigns As UVa’s Men’s Head Basketball Coach

CHARLOTTESVILLE–Craig Littlepage, University of Virginia director of athletics, today announced the resignation of Dave Leitao as men’s head basketball coach, effective immediately.

Littlepage met with Leitao earlier today to discuss the future of the men’s basketball program. At that time, Leitao, who has just concluded his fourth season at the University, determined it was in the best interest of the program to step down.

“Dave has been a respected colleague and a fine University representative in the local community during his tenure here. He brought a great deal of leadership, discipline and integrity to his coaching responsibilities,” Littlepage said. “I appreciate his hard work and dedication to athletics at the University of Virginia.”

Leitao, who came to Virginia from DePaul University, began coaching at UVa in April 2005. His four teams compiled an overall record of 63-60 and participated in three post-season tournaments, including the 2007 NCAA tournament.

A national search for a new men’s head basketball coach will get under way immediately. Littlepage did not specify a time frame for concluding the search, taking into account the fact that many of the possible candidates are currently involved in post-season play. “We expect to attract a strong pool of candidates interested in becoming a part of our University community,” Littlepage said.

“Our intention is to hire the very best person to lead the University’s basketball program consistent with our overall department goals,” he added. “Our team has a promising nucleus of young players who we expect will continue to develop.”

Leitao and the University have come to a financial agreement that will pay Leitao approximately $2.1 million.
