The folks who run Market Street Wine Shop Someone (?) plans to launch a downtown grocery store. Details were left in a comment:
I just wanted to announce to everyone downtown who’s been requesting a grocery store that I am starting a grocery store and deli on the corner of 4th and market. We open to be open for business around September 1st. We welcome your suggestions and support!
So, what do you want to see out of this grocery store?

I guess they mean in the space the antique store was (gray building, huge windows, a bunch of LV luggage in the window)? Interesting.
“Please don’t feed me junk” or something like that, yeah.
this is magnificent news. of course there’s already the grocery store Blue Ridge Market, owned by the nice fast-talking guy and his wife. MSW always had fabulous herb-baguettes and exotic stinky cheeses, and those terrific smoked-trout wrapped in brown-paper. and carried Coca-Cola (i get hopping mad every time I go to Whole Foods and can’t get an American Coke–what the hell is the matter with that place?).
we still need a laundromat and someplace that serves food after 10pm until an hour or two after bars close, on the Mall, so me and my drunkie pals don’t have to run my Jag over median strips and into parked cars to get to Wafflehouse or Littlejohn’s.
A friend of mine is looking into opening a bar in Fairfax and he’s considering staying open till 5. Not serving alcohol past 2, mind you, just continuing to serve bar food so people can sober up.
Hey there,
Just to clarify, The Market Street Wineshop is not opening a grocery store. Though we do already have a section for food and such.
excellent food and stuff, fed me in high style for years.
people tend to forget that’s it’s ‘more than just a wine-shop’
You haz awesome cheeses
BTW you may want to check out missed connections….
We are opening a grocery and deli on market street but it is not in any way affiliated with the Market Street Wine shop.
Better not be selling wine or sian’s gonna cut you
The location of the new Market and Deli will be where Cadogan Square Antiques is now. It is a large space, and we are planning to carry the full spectrum of grocery items as well as an extensive range of Deli stuff. We plan to have freshly roast turkey, roast chicken ,home made corned beef , pastrami, smoked fish and lots more.
corned beef is so good. Hope you know what you are doing, cause when it is bad it is really bad. Kind of like Tequila.

We would like to do a story on this. Can you contact me? hgraff@nbc29.com

We’re going to leave wine to the experts downtown,Market St. Wine and Tastings.
Awesome. I can’t wait to shop at your market. Lucky Seven really lacks a certain je ne sais quoi…
Thanks! It seems like it will take about four months to set up . As to the corned beef, although I lived in Charlottesville a long time , I was born in Manhattan and worked on the Lower East Side so I am well acquainted with the best corned beef and pastrami, and I know what to aim for.
you should probably change the title of this post. It’s misleading and just wrong.
Yeah, no shit.
A market with no parking would seem to be an issue, no?
Not for people that live downtown and need a grocery store because they don’t have a car.
Segways come with saddlebags, anyhow.
I am fi. na. lly. about to move downtown, so this is exciting news to me!
What are the plans for bread? I’d love to find some real-bakery bread, maybe even some olive-oil rosemary ciabatta and other mediterranean stuff like that. Speaking of which: fresh pestos would be most welcome (the 365 pesto of Whole Foods is my reference class–not sure how they make it taste the way it does as an industrial bottled product, but it’s one of the most amazing pestos I’ve ever tasted). And fresh herbs. And you can never have enough cheeses.
(By-the-by, I’d be interested to hear about any other downtown places–other than the Market, I’m familiar with that–that sell above kind of thing.)
as I can see from your avatar dude… is that cheddar?
That nose of mine might be cheapo cracker barrel cheese, or pure gold. Also, I never got to choose. Gotta look into that.
The wine shop (Market Street Wineshop) gets a fresh delivery from Albemarle bakery and The Bread Basket every day. Well, except Sundays. We also carry pesto etc. Though I am looking forward to a produce section right across the way.
Though I am looking forward to a produce section right across the way.
There are many who admire your tomatoes…
I find I can get most everything I want between Market St., Feast, Integral Yoga, Reid’s, Mona Lisa, and the good ol’ Lucky Seven.
However! There’s always room for improvement. Some things I’d like to get that no one carries:
Medaglia D’Oro instant espresso
Batampte kosher dill pickles
Oranges, tangelos, grapefruits, et. al.
Well there’s more, but these are examples of things I have to bum a ride across town to obtain. So any newcomer is welcome — looking forward to it.
Feast closes too damn early. And not open on Sunday.
Feast is also kinda expensive (as is Integral Yoga, also the previously unmentioned Organic Butcher). But it’s nice to be able to get local produce and charcuterie there.
I have not been able to find Batampte pickles. Where do you go “across town” to get them? I’m a NE transplant and I haven’t been able to find them in the South.
That was the pickle of choice in N.Y. if it didn’t come right out of the barrel. I will see if I can get a distributor for that. Along those lines I have found a place in Ma. that makes smoked salmon, smoked sable , and their own pickled herring that seems very promising.
just say no to gelfite fish.
Seminole Square Giant is the source.
Actually, have lately found some pickles at Rebecca’s, which, while hailing from Florida, are every bit as good. They come in a food-grade plastic container, and are called Schorr’s Sour Garlic Pickles.
Check it!
Thanks!
I am not as big a pickle expert as the viscous rumors on the internet say, but I recently discovered the joy of “Wickles”. Tasty little bastards, they.
Where do you get such things. Are they cornichons? (olive bar in Whole Foods)
Ive only found them under the comforting halogen lighting of H. Tweeter. The are pickles, but infused somehow with very hot peppers. Wickles = wicked pickles. Sounds silly, but they are very snacky.
wow…I just drooled.
I am buying some of these Today!
Merci.
I got two jars of half sours. Thanks!!
new monster
Giant has them.
Goin’ tonight!
Ba-Tempte (“Means Tasty!”) are available at Giant, unless the creepy corporate makeover has changed things. Near prepackaged deli stuff, I think.
Feast is also kinda expensive…
Kinda? Its the financial equivalent of prison rape.
Ha — yeah but I’ll pay four bucks for a half a pound of haricots verts every now and then. They’re worth it!
You can grow those really easily… they are just string beans with a fancy-assed name ( no offense to your name intended). The secret is to harvest them early before they get tough and errr…stringy.
Okay — I’ve got the Romas and the chiles growing in containers at my place downtown… some chives, some dill, some rosemary, and such. But no room for any string beans, French or otherwise?
And so.
‘Chillies on your Willy!’
I bet you do. They are pretty amazing climbers…
I had “The Local” sandwich from Feast cafe the other day and was disappointed. Waste of 8 bucks. The ingredients on their own or coupled together work nicely, but although I found it to be muddled. The fruit salad was pathetic as the post on the weather.
Next time I will stick with the Turkey, Brie and Cranberry….yuuum.
That is a trio of tastiness indeed.
PLEASE for the love of GOD build a UKROPS. thanks.
And a Trader Joe’s
Boo! No booze. And closed on Sunday like stupid Chick-Fil-A
Jesus hates chickens. And shrimp.
publix = ridiculously expensive.
Wegman’s needs to finally make the jump here.
I hear people talk about Wegmans like they’re jizzing in their pants.
Wegman’s is like Harris Teeter and Whole Foods had an uber-baby and gave it steroids
