Trader Joe’s Coming to Charlottesville!

The long-winded rumors are true… according to C-VILLE, Trader Joe’s is

applying for a liquor license with the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The ABC has confirmed that the application was received on May 21…The store will be located on the stretch of land between Hydraulic Road and Greenbrier Drive.

The only gripe: why can’t it be closer to downtown?  :(

no–a new, scaled down version of plans was just approved yesterday

“The Charlottesville Planning Commission has approved changes to the preliminary site plan for a new Whole Foods store that was originally approved on July 22, 2008. The grocery store, which has now been reduced in size, will be built at the intersection of Hydraulic Road and the future Hillsdale Drive Extended. The Commission unanimously approved the new site plan, however, with conditions that will need to be reviewed by the applicant, S.J. Collins Enterprises, LLC.”

The address given is 1080 Seminole Trail, on 29 just south of the Shell with the E-85 and biodiesel. It’s not part of albemarle place there, is it?

Well, maybe it’s part of Albemarle Place, but maybe there’s hope.

The address given is north of Sperry, but south of the Shell Station, and also south of Comdial.

According to this map, which is a couple of years old, the Albemarle Place monstrosity wraps completely around Sperry. I assume that 1080 is the space marked here as Whole Foods.

My point is that, maybe we won’t have to wait for the 50-million-dollar 17-lane all-singing all-dancing interchange at Hydraulic Road before the Trader Joe’s opens.

Hold your breath waiting for Albemarle Place. No question that Trader Joes has had to deal with ABC in the past and is just getting its ducks in a row for its 2015 opening.

It will not be downtown for two reasons.

    1. They use SES demographic mapping to fit their target clients and..
    2. Require parking.

Tell us where those two meet downtown. And please do not kid me by saying the IX building, which is straddled by the largest Title 8 housing in the area and the lower end of Belmont, two places with big high SES demographic map red “Xs” on the computer screen.

It’d be nice if someone could do something with the rat-infested rundown sump that is the Old Pantops Shopping Plaza. Any chance we could get Trader Joe up there, and maybe even find some space for KYLE’S ADVANCED CROSSFIT TRAINING EMPORIUM? Population density and favourable traffic patterns must’ve altered within recent years with all those condos being built, and with the road being used as a principal artery for commuters and Pav/JPJ attendees? Trader Joe’s aside, any rumors anywhere of anything being done to that godawful cesspit?

What, Roses and Food Lion is no good? I cannot imagine how that place survives. Its like Barracks Road in 1988. Until Roses is gone, and the customer it breeds, the place will not change.

I think KYLE’S ADVANCED CROSSFIT TRAINING CENTRE may be a subsidiary venture under the broader aegis of KYLE’S EXCLUSIVE CROSSFIT TRAINING EMPIRE, to include KYLE’S DEFINITIVE FORWARD-LOOKING MAXIMIZED CROSSFIT COLLOQUIUM and the aforementioned CENTRE upon which all right-thinking persons’ hopes for self-betterment repose, and for which we all keenly await.

Kyle–without jest, could we have an update on this?
I for one am excited about it, would I be permitted to join.

there was a really nice-looking coffeehouse & pastry-shop & wine-bar near Hallmark—did that place fold? I kept wanting to go there, but was always deterred by having to drive past advance-auto/taco-bell/jiffylube to get there, and in thoughts of what sort of human depredation/decay/tragedy I’d have to see on parade from their patio while trying to enjoy my venti.
