Smart Grid Technology Coming to Charlottesville

tim kaine
Dominion Virginia Power announced yesterday Charlottesville will be one of the first cities to experience smart grid electricity management.  For those of you not aware what this is, smart grid tech allows consumers and utility companies to track energy usage in real time.  This allows consumers to take an even deeper dive and find out how much power appliances are using at any given instant.  The idea here is that you can see the direct impact of your energy dependency and make appropriate changes, decreasing your utility costs and allowing the utility to know if it can increase or decrease power output given current usage requirements.

Google’s PowerMeter service will allow this kind of web-based monitoring sometime in the future.  More information after the break. From the press release:

U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th, said, “Smart grid technology is our gateway to the frontiers of the new energy economy, and I’m proud that Charlottesville will be leading the way with this demonstration program. I believe our area can be a catalyst for new technologies that will lower costs for consumers while also reducing our carbon footprint.

“This initiative gives consumers new tools to make smarter choices in how — and when — they use energy,” said U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner. “I salute Dominion Virginia Power and Charlottesville and Albemarle County officials for blazing the trail in Virginia with this next-generation energy conservation program.”
