UPDATE: POLL ADDED!
A staple of any sane person’s diet, I think it is safe to say all cVillains love pizza as well. But which one do we love the most? The best pie I have had was Dr. Ho’s Humble Pie. That comment was smacked around like a red-headed step child a couple weeks ago. So here is the invitation for you all to offer even better pie selections in town so we can do a proper comparison. I am hungry, game on.

Of course, Christian’s and Brick Oven are good. But End Zone Pizza in Forest Lakes is seriously underrated. Best NY style pizza I’ve had in years!
Mellow.
Christian’s is god awful. I really don’t get the fascination with it. Yes, I know they offer these non-standard toppings, but if you can’t even get a slice of plain cheese to not taste like cardboard, that says enough.
2nd would be Crozet Pizza.
/have not had dr. ho’s
Walk an extra thousand bricks and go to Vita Nova across from Splendora. It’s in the original Christian’s location.
I know I will get bashed for this.
Nevertheless…
Crozet Pizza is the best. It’s crackpizza.
Elsewhere: Dr. Ho’s is very good. Anna’s has a sentimental place in my heart. Christians is laughable – slightly halfway passable if it came out of the oven in the last sixty seconds, but still tastes like it’s two hours old.
Vita Nova, Fabios… in that order.
Is Vita Nova the place that used to be Sylvia’s or something… above Henry’s?
Oh yea… then I really like them. I’m a pretty “simple pizza” kind of guy, and they do it well.
Vita Nova is the best pizza in town. And to make it even better, go on a weeknight about 30 minutes before closing and they’ll usually give you all the pizza you want for the cost of a slice.
Good tip!
Well, I believe Christian worked at Sylvia’s and developed what he makes at Chrisian’s now, there. It’s the same style cause he is the originator of both
ha that’s exactly how i put it.
otherwise i’ll stay away from this conversation bc i’ll get yelled at for voicing my opinion during this serious conversation about pizza & trying to ruin all these hardworking people’s hopes & dreams blah blah blah.
Pussy is the new Pizza
no it isn’t. STFU
The owner of Christians sold the biz to the guys at Vita Nova then walked away with his cash and 3 year no complete contract. At about 3 years and 1 day he opened Christians just down the mall.
Well within his rights, but I suspect he will not be using the Vita Nova guys as references if he ever decides to sell again.
Decent pizza, but the topping creativity left about 5 years ago. I love to order a Dr hos when on the road back into town.
Crozet Pizza is great if you have the time to drive and the patience to wait an hour to get a pie.
Christians is cardboard & tired.
Sal’s isn’t anything you should ever put in your mouth.
Vita Nova is good fun & I like the people. And their nice. Suck it everyone who works at Christians!
Mellow Mushroom is pretty good, but they tend to burn the crust way too often. Still like it though. Carbon is good for the soul.
But my real question is… What will Jeff Spagnolo & Andrew Vaughn’s pizza be like when they open in the Millmont Shopping Center?
As unfashionable as it is to say these days, Christian’s is on more than not and when they are, they have some of the best crust in town. Vito Nova is solid as well. Fabio’s is run of the mill NY style pizza that seems exotic when compared to the local efforts. Haven’t tried Dr. Ho’s or Crozet.
Brick Oven, Sal’s, Anna’s and the rest – bleah.
See, I didn’t even play the “I’m from NYC and I know pizza” card. Oh, wait.
There is no such thing as bad pizza. There is only better pizza.
I like Bagel Bites from the frozen section at Target. You can get a 800 pack. And you can just throw em right in the toilet to eliminate even eating them or getting diarrhea. Quick and easy.
Dr. Ho’s and pizza at Basil on the corer are the best in these parts. The Brick Oven is damn good too.
road trip to Richmond and have pizza at Bottom’s Up. Worth every mile.
my face is pizza
get some proactiv.
/works for Jessica Simpson.
we argue this same tired argument every couple of months. please. stop.
Dr. Ho’s is the best I’ve had in the area. Crozet Pizza is also NOMalicious. I used to like Pizza Bella a lot, but have since decided otherwise…
Cville weekly is fellating the awfully precious Sons of Bill for the 98th time, and here we are halfheartedly fighting the pizza battle once again. All and all a pretty boring week. *le sigh*
/i know, i know… “be the change”…
can you please write a post titled “fellating” ?
I could, but it would blow.
ciro’s pizza in waynesboro is the shit…and they’ll sell you their awesome dough so you can make your own pizzas at home for like $1. they need to open in a shop in crozet…would blow crozet pizza’s ridiculously overpriced (and only OK IMO) pizza away…
The pizza thread is one I avoided till now because it’s crass and lazy. if you going to have a thread on who’s the best and you don’t spend the extra 5 minutes to make a poll then you SUCK! This thread is a Summer rerun of previous threads without thought, nay almost disdain for those of us regulars.
Of course, I’m in no way making light for those in this thread who have true opinions and want to say something. This may be the summer doldrums (or the Great Flood) but Spicy Bear and Thor are phoning it in.
BTW Mona Lisa (next to Stix on Preston) makes great pizza from the very hands of the original Dr Ho (just sayin’)
ya chica, make a pole
And @ (current) #24: Yep… thor’s high.
the story on wi-fi broke June 8th. cVillain breaks it a week and a half later.
never claimed to break it. whats your point?
It’s old and stale and a desperate attempt to get a “new” post up. I know you are only trying to help.
Look, the place is slipping. Here is material for the suggestion box:
-Bring back news updates. There were like two of these and it was a good start. What happened?
-Consistent Weekend preview. Where did that go?
-Restaurant and bar reviews. Always a hit.
-Don’t leave the Feature up for more than, oh, four days.
-Gossip is good.
-Report Charlottesville events that you think would be interesting to cVillains. This year’s Taste This! was nearly missed. The excuse “we covered this last year and these people didn’t email us. … but that’s cool we’re just a blog.” RIDICULOUS. Honestly who do you think you are? Find out what’s happening and report it.
-Do another cVillian event or something. Create buzz. Meet more “birdies” who know things.
-FFA is OK is there is nothing else to talk about. Don’t rely on it.
yes t’was a bit stale but non-discussed on the site. as for the other suggestions, all good and we love doing them but we operate like a non-profit so it is hard to get all of those things going when no one besides the core team helps out.
i think a lot of people on the site think doing this stuff, no matter how short the post, is really easy. it actually takes a long time. so…we can do this if other villains step up. i admit, i do miss the consistent weekend previews.
as for the taste this, people with happenings in town usually email us to let us know, or even call us, those that don’t fall through the cracks unfortunately. actually we think we are a blog. if we were a newspaper we would have a bloated staff to cover everything under the sun.
i will say this, stay tuned for more restaurant and bar reviews. there is a huge list of new places that haven’t been officially tasted but discussed in the commentary that deserve a spot in fame.
feel free to stop by spicy bear HQ miss. orange…free internet and a cozy office await.
just curious: is the core team made up of volunteers or are they on payroll?
and what the hell would I do at the spicy bear HQ?
the core team is all volunteer based. for and by the community. spicy bear hq offers a comfy place to write and get really mellow in your thoughts as well as an espresso machine.
I wish I could contribute more, but I dont get out exploring much, and dont know shit about food, culture or anything really…
I did have an idea for a post tho: “Phony Charlottesville” to coincide with the Photo Fest. Have everyone send in/post camera phone pictures from around town. Maybe get a flickr thingy for them. Maybe allow inline images for just that one topic. Who knows? We could have an online photo exhibit! I bet the collected freaks that hang/lurk around these parts could come up with a pretty eclectic gallery of oddity. Cameras on phones are getting pretty good. Only works if folks participate though…
Here. I’ll kick it off. C&O. I like it. Kinda has that stark Hopper thing goin on…
Lets get it clickin. Or not.
thanks for the encouragement b’yo. we do appreciate it ALOT when cVillains contribute posts to the community. thank you!
we need to work on the technical kinks to allow pics to be posted with basic user access. stay tuned!
we just added a poll to this to let the numbers battle it out.
next up: who’s got the best bbq and why doesn’t bodo’s toast their bagels?
I’m biased b/c they provide our pasta, but Mona Lisa’s is my fave in town right now. Probably once every two weeks I call ahead for a whole pie on the way home.
Try the Pizza di Parma (it’s got prosciutto). http://www.monalisapasta.com/pizza.htm
Lots of people tell me Fabio’s is their fave pizza, but whenever I’m there I have to get a cheesesteak.
Bottom’s Up was willing to make their “low carb” pizza for me in a separate area, keeping it free from gluten contamination. That was pretty awesome. It was just a huge portabello cap with toppings, but I was able to eat out and not worry about getting sick.
When I could still eat pizza with abandon, I actually liked Christian’s quite a bit, even though they never got my special order white pizzas sufficiently garlicky. The crust was never greasy and always served to hold toppings nicely. Now I have to make everything from scratch and the crust I end up with is pretty close to the yeasty hand-tossed crusts that I grew up eating back in my flyover homeland.
NY style is the greasy, flimsy crust, right? Or does it just end up that way? My husband likes his pizza that way and it reminds me too much of school cafeteria pizza, the kind with so much grease you need a pile of napkins under your elbow.
I’d love for Jules Thin Crust to open a local shop. I was skeptical when I heard about it (cracker crusts can be weird), but it seriously rocks. Sadly, they’re just in the Philly/Bucks area.
NY style does have sort of flimsy crust (so you can fold it). But it should never be greasy. Obviously the cheese makes any pizza somewhat greasy (as in, more greasy than salad), but a good pizza crust should never, ever bePizza Hut pan-pizza greasy.
Anna’s is fantastic. It’s the closest approximation of any pizza place in Cville to what I’ve had in Italy. I like Anna’s for its totally unpretentious, soccer-banquet vibe. Adds to the appeal. Basil used to have good pizzas, and then they discontinued making pizza, which was a bad decision on their part.
I used to work at Brick Oven many, many years ago (and so can’t quite bring myself to set foot in there now), but as of 9 years ago, they were doing a good job.
Pizza Bella (near Mill Creek) and Cobb’s (near Hydraulic) aren’t bad. Though Cobb’s has a very weird atmosphere, so takeout is the way to go.
Tip Top (Greek diner on Pantops) might be my favorite. Plain cheese is very good.
I do like vegetables and non-traditional toppings on my pizza, but if the restaurant can’t make a cheese pizza well, then I’m probably never going back.
i’ve never been able to eat at brick oven bc right after i moved here there was a rant that said that the pizza maker at B—- O—- was picking his nose.
Mmmmm… almost pizza.
Drool…
UvaLaGrape is the new Shenanigans
I hide behind stupid aliases because in real life I’m fat and sad. You guys are talking about pizza because you’re white. Pussy! Taint!
Where is the radio button for “they all suck”? Or, more politely, “there is no good pizza in Charlottesville?”
EDIT: Added it myself… Missed that option the first time — apologies…
If you haven’t had Sal’s pizza in Earlysville then you have not had the best pizza in town. Sal’s baked penne also kicks some major butt… it has red sauce AND tons of creamy, cheesy goodness in it!
