Meeting on the Future of cVillain: 2PM Sunday

We’re holding a meeting at 2PM on Sunday at the CrossFit Charlottesville gym. We’re going to use this time to brainstorm ideas for moving forward. Bring your thinking caps or submit ideas in comments below if you can’t make it. We’ve had a lot of interest and expect a “town hall meeting” of sorts.  Please make sure you are on time, the meeting will start promptly at 2PM.

If you want to be part of the future of cVillain, this is an important time to make sure it carries on.

The gym is located on the back side of the UTZ/Linen building at the intersection of Meade and East Market.  We are across from the cemetery place and Jinx’s BBQ.   Take your first right on East Market once you cross Meade.  Go around back for parking.

when we’re done we’ll all do a crossfat workout… maw down some heavy breads and swill back dark beers and sugary cocktails. some of you will probably make out, others will go immediately to their liveblogs and tweeter the whole thing. all in all, a pretty standard internet meetup.

also, “go around back for parking” is that’s what she said.

Perhaps we should all take note of Verbal Sniper. We are puerile and amateur. I propose we all bitch and moan about excessive parking rates at CHO airport… me first….
parking: there’s absolutely no reason for the high daily parking rates. It absolutely kills me when I come back from a week-long trip to end up paying >$50 to keep my car parked at the airport.

I’d take a cab in lieu of parking, but it is a minimum $30 from downtown (each way.) Plus, there are no alternate parking providers like in many cities to counter the high on-airport parking rates.

(I’d gladly take a shuttle from say, Target, to save a few bucks a day.)

Parking is definitely a cost that I factor in when considering where I fly from.

You know, at first I thought that a limerick with a reference to a diaper would be the natural response to the accusation of being puerile. It seemed to fit somehow, even though I harbor no malice towards Mr. Sniper. But after a year or so of suffering these “anonymous” (heh, right) fly by night snipings from Mr. Sniper and his ilk – folks who seem to hate this board and its regulars so much that they feel compelled to participate, if even in a dismissive way – I dont know if that was the right way to go about it. I have questions.

Mr. Sniper, or Verbal if I may, in reading your ‘passionate’ online writings, you don’t seem like such a bad guy. You paint yourself as an open minded, curious person. You seem to like to debate and kick around political ideas, as I do. Your libertarian stance seems not unlike my own self styled form of political independence, if not for its tenets, then at least for its solitude. You seem genuinely interested in the world and all its many facets. So I wonder… what would possess a person such as your self to pop into a silly little message board like this and act like such a pompous toolbag. I just don’t get it. If this site sucks so much, then why even come here? Why not just ignore it? I mean I find freerepublic and prisonplanet to be my little e-bastions of crazy that I sometimes read for the lulz, but I certainly would never post on their boards to tell them so. What purpose would that serve?

Is it the illusion of anonymity (snicker) that emboldens you to share a side of yourself that you would not if it were say, one of your two blogs with your face and contact info right there? Is it jealousy? Insecurity? I mean, you and Kyle have a lot in common – entrepreneurs and all – it just seems that Kyle gets a little more recognition for his gigs. Could that be it? Did you want your commentless blog to be “the new face of evil”? Its probably better that it wasn’t, I mean, your new job probably keeps you too busy to blog with any regularity, just like Kyle will now be too busy with whipping fatties into shape in his treehouse to run this site.

Or perhaps you just really hate the regulars and it feels good to flip them the bird every once and a while. Thats cool, I guess. Not my style really, but it seems to be therapeutic to those who have some sort of psycho-spiritual void. If thats the case, flip on my brother. We’re here for you, at least for a little while yet. Go on, get it all out.

Pity we did not “meet” before your trip to S.F. in March. I could have turned you on to some much cooler things out there than Lefty O’Doole’s and Fisherman’s Wharf, but oh well. Maybe next time.

Anyway, any elucidation as to the motivation behind your vitriol would be appreciated, though truthfully, I do not expect it. Never hurts to ask though.

/aint the internet cool? its like everything’s connected and stuff…

It appears that the unresolved issue necessary for the site to continue is the lack of someone willing to assume personal liability, no? If so, I have an ex-pat friend with ties to Charlottesville who happens to live in a country with no extradition agreements with the US (not a criminal, just a coincidence ;-) who would probably be willing to be the liability bearer, as he is literally judgment proof as well as beyond the reach of service-of-process. Interested? Site would continue to be run from Charlottesville and person mentioned wouldn’t even want to be an admin, just “owner” in the strictly legal sense.

Aside from the possibility of using wrongly appropriated copyrighted photos, you’d have to be sure posters or perhaps even commenters weren’t plagiarizing, that nothing posted amounted to slander or libel (which one’s written? I always forget..) and that no harm came from any content (someone comments that so and so is a big fat whore and the person in question jumps off the roof of the Landmark..) to be completely safe.
The downside to having an owner who couldn’t be sued is that said owner also couldn’t sue if the situation required it, but thats a chance that might have to be taken?

            Mr. Jefferson,

For food reviews, you should go experience it for your self. Congratulation on not being a “nerd” yet you are one of the dirty dozen here. So maybe I should look for some six figure income since I shun no labels post upon me? Congratulations on your enjoyment of this soon to be defunct site.

P.s. I think you have a sweet ass crib Mr. Jefferson. Especially with that nice garden and cider cellar.

            Your sweet admiring darling,

This isn’t very complex from a technical standpoint. You can pay $40/mo for a hosting service and roll out a wordpress blog. This town is large enough to sustain a forum such as cvillain, and I’m willing to get involved as long as there is more transparency in the posting and more updates coming from a wider group over people, instead of the same 5 or 6 people all the time. As I told Kyle in an email, for this site to work, it has to be completely de-commercialized. You can’t run advertisements for local businesses while claiming to offer objective news and reviews. Remember how defensive Kyle got when cvillain’s favorite sophisti-bar, X-Lounge, spammed the entire University of Virginia email list?

As long is the site is not commercial, it can be hosted privately by someone with comcast. However, since you have no guarantee of service, that is a bad idea.

http://www.slicehost.com/ -> $38/mo should handle the needs of the site. I can help set up crap if people are willing to get hosting.

I should note that the cvillain name should probably be kept, if possible. It’s the “brand” and has been around long enough to be recognizable by the city’s internet-savvy people. Relaunch a new and improved site at cvillain.com

The site is dying because of the featured post in the home page! Nix it (as a feature). As for the future, Ethan is correct. Or even use a free blogger account. Not sure how touchy they are about complaints, though. Is Google Groups good enough? Hmm. Blogger should be better. Hosted even better. Depending on traffic, you could get by on less than $40/month.

could you give us a couple links to sites you like that are done through those portals?

do they look ‘good’, or can they be coded to look like this one and not like Craigslist chats?

did anyone agree on any of these threads to be the name behind/in-front of such a venture?

would it be one name on the account but a couple administrators approving articles?

is each comment moderated, or would commenters e-mail admin to delete bad ones?

could there be a User’s agreement specifying no copyright violation/slander/libel etc.?

could this be a temporary fix if we decide to go CHARMED to nonprofit status?

will kyle stay involved and can we still use the name Cvillain?

40 bucks a month is do-able. i can cover the first few months until i run out of plasma to sell.

There definitely needs to be a statement against libel and copyright violations. There should also be a statement declaring that reviews and news are intended to be as objective, but no guarantees can be made regarding factual accuracy. We should be more careful with the images that are posted to make sure that they are available for public non-commercial use. Those are typical CYA things.

As for designing blog sites–I haven’t done that with slicehost. Slicehost is just a hosting service that gives you a login and carte blanche to install any required software you need in your space. If Kyle is willing to hand over the code for this wordpress blog, maybe we could use it. Otherwise, we could just download a new, blank wordpress and customize how it looks on our own. That’s not so hard, I think.

ethan… thank you for that detailed reply.

would you consider, just for general info and to get the ball rolling, doinga post for us that would elaborate on these points a tad, answer the questions in @121, and provide a few links so we could get a feel for things… perhaps the ensuing discussion would hash-out our best option, perhaps even bring forth a champion, perhaps lead to a launch?

      {i suppose we could make part of the user-agreement to include that ALL photos have to be taken by the person writing the post? that’d cover THAT.}

In the “rules for posting” post, it already says, “You can’t take pictures from other websites unless they have a creative commons license.”
