Anyone got a good CREATIVE COMMONS photo for the above post? Nothing was catching my eye.

I know it gets repetitive, as its *every* friday, but hey…
Can we use that for the pic?
Like I said to Kevin, or whomever that nice young gentleman that used to run the site was named, anything I post here, you can use for anything, including but not limited to autoerotic asphyxiation.
That said, no one from here ever attends snatchateria events, other than to pop in and say hi, as the music doesn’t have enough (or any) banjos, vintage shirts, deep emo meaning, dread locks and / or standoffish fixed gear street cred – so you might wanna think twice. But hey, its your site Ivan… go for it. Follow your bliss.
/your electronica ate my harmonica!
But what about T-Pain? You got that?
You laugh, but on wednesday a woman came up to me with a printed out list, nearly fifty songs deep, and said that she was “bringing 30-40 people here for an informal party” and this is what she wanted to hear. All of it was commercial rap and slow jams. And yes T Pain made the list. *sigh*
Just sent a polite email explaining what Ive been trying to do here in charlottesberg these last, oh, three years or so, and to ask why she would pick snatchateria, when nearly every other dj in town, including those on the radio, are playing her whole list and then some. Escafe is the last bastion of straight ahead house music in the area since x stopped doing it. The. Last. As small a scene as it may be, cant we have our little dance party…? Because the people that dig it, *really* dig it. And like any other unfamiliar music or experience, it *can* be really fun if you can just get over your god damned self.
Aaaand, I’ll shut up now.
how could sunday’s headliner @ iS Venue be left out. Immortal Technique.

Friday – Straight Punch to the Crotch @ The Box

anyone hep to the Buju Banton squabble?
i just read an astounding article in Richmond Style magazine about it all. The Richmond LGBT is having some function the same night Buju Banton is scheduled to play, and there is a petition circulating and lots of controversy a-brewin’, because apparently rastafarians are very hatefully anti-homosexual? It said that it’s a habit and hobby of rastas to go out and beat up gays? Weird, weird, weird. This is news to me… i thought all that One Love stuff went both ways.
Do we have to boycott dance-hall now, or is this just a bad apple ruining the bushel?
Reject “Boom Bye Bye”,
If I play reggae music does that make me a Rasta? If I think, say or believe something, does that mean all people like me think, feel and speak the same way? Wow, I thought we had grown way past these kinds of generalizations. I have many Rasta friends. A true Rasta, not someone that plays Reggae music, believes in “‘I and I’, which is said instead of ‘you and I.’ It emphasizes the oneness between humanity and God as well as the equality of all humans.”
thanks, IamNotMe… curious about the controversy rather than arguing a side. Any details?
The Style article seemed to suggest it was common, but I’d never heard of it. I think Reggae is a very different form practiced by a different subculture from those making and using DanceHall…isn’t DanceHall what became ska and rap?
there seems to be an anti-banton facebook page, and shows cancelled all over the US. I know Banton has played Cville any number of times, but seemingly not on this tour.
Dance hall is “aggressive” in the same way that hip hop is “aggressive”, and it stems from the tradition of “battling” on the mic. Commercial versions of these genres (ie rap) stray from the roots of leaving it at the battle, and thugs it out to appeal to those consumers who dont know their history, and attempt to live battle put downs literally.
Dance hall, though, grew out of a kind of Jamaican music called “toasting” (see: Michigan & Smiley) which evolved parallel to “MC-ing” (see: Fab Five Freddy) in the states.
Ska outdates them all, but it wasn’t everywhere until the Brits got a hold of it.
There are as many flavors of Rastafarianism as there are Judaism (and many interesting overlaps – ie earlocks and dread locks). Orthodox Rastas believe some pretty interesting and often odd things, just as orthodox jews do. Some may very well believe that being gay is morally reprehensible, but I sincerely doubt it would bring out a violent response. I believe the rasta phrase “fear not the wicked, let them die and they will perish” would apply.
I never saw Israel Virbration kick any one’s ass. Ok, thats a bad joke.
Buju banton should be avoided, not for anything political, but rather because he sucks quite profoundly.
“Singjay Buju Banton has been forced to cancel his seven-city tour of the United States (US) due to another round of protests from gay rights groups against him in that country.”
“Dancehall is an offshoot of reggae, a more dance-oriented version with the addition of hip-hop beats and a more urban focus”
Quoth whom?
Either way, the hottest shit is coming outta Somalia these days.
/”dusty foot philosopher” ftw.
K’naan is suhhweeeet. Video looks like it was shot with a cellphone, though.
