While the video may not quite live up to comedic standards, City Council candidate Bob Fenwick does bring up a good point. While the current council is busy handing out $300,000 checks for continued ‘dredging studies’, there are a handful of companies which have already performed such studies on the Rivanna Reservoir, and all for free. UNCUS reports that Blue Ridge Sand offered a proposal in 2004 to remove 1/7 of the total sediment within the dam, and the proposal was shot down for its ‘opportunistic’ dredging strategy.
This recent $300K joins an ever growing pool of other studies, which may carry a completed price tag of nearly $12 Million total. Meanwhile, current Mayor, Dave Norris, is opposing Mr. Fenwick’s bid for office, stating that he is “trying to score some political points”, and that the issue is “much more complicated”. While we aren’t looking to weigh in on either side of the muddy debate, there is something to be said for reviewing what we already have on the table as far as options go, and Fenwick (who has spent seven years with the Army Corps of Engineers) is certainly working with what we’ve already got, as opposed to firing ‘empowering’ and replacing, as seems the current trend.
