Big town, or small city. I remember when the debate was still going on about whether we should accept the ‘city’ status, or stick it out as the town we had always been. That same duality has probably led us to the current October lineup, as we are getting ready to welcome both Metallica & Thievery Corporation into our midst.
The boys who hated Napster are continuing their World Magnetic Tour at JPJ on the 17th. They recently celebrated their EIGHTH Grammy win, and perhaps even more important, their own GUITAR HERO. [Info]
Thievery Corporation, a favorite of trendy restaurants the world over, have taken a more political stance on ‘Radio Retaliation’, their most recent album. Their music blends world beat and DJ’ing into one seamless act, and will be available for your perusal October 29th @ The Pavilion. [Info]
I’m betting that MANY more Villains will be attending one of these events, but let’s see:

Thievery brings the big big sound, and if you havent seen em, I’d recommend em. Caught this set up in DC at 9:30, and although I prefer the old thievery, the new stuff is probably more accessible. The bass collapsed my rib cage.
Metallica makes me want to sell bootleg cd’s and shirts in the parking lot and donate the money to the music resource center. Yeah yeah they were great and all, but they are whiny bitches and are on my not to be forgiven list, which is pretty hard to get on.
When I think metal + lounge, I think of this.
I figured you would think of this…
I don’t get it.
I don’t blame you, but I couldn’t resist. Perhaps I’m a fan of that old F/X movie a little too much.
Metallica sucks. Thievery is definitely resto soundtrack music. Is watching them live worth it? Or boring?
Insane live. If they’re running the same show as a year ago, there are like 25 guest singers and musicians from all over the world. And shit is cranking, always changing, very little chilling going on. Them dropping some sick beats with rastas toasting and dudes jammin out on sitars… Im pretty sure I saw a kitchen sink in there. Pretty cool light show too…
But the bass. Oh, the bass! Their sound tech is amazing – def a show for the sound geeks out there. I know the pavilion kinda sucks for sound, but still.
Sitars? Hell yeah. Maybe I’ll go.
i would go see metallica in a club with no huge screens and super light shows and robots giving them bj’s on stage yada yada. just rock n roll.
If there had been a local show for the poll choice someone added:
“go to prettylightsmusic(dot) com – watch the video, then download the four free albums. funkiest shit out right now…”
I would have left it. But as there won’t be one, it seems a little shameless. And around these parts, we are all about shame…
go to prettylightsmusic(dot) com – watch the video, then download the four free albums. funkiest shit out right now…
That was me, and I am not affiliated, but its the hottest tip in music that Ive stumbled on lately. Just watch the damn video in the media section, and tell me something funkier happening here. Think Daft Punk meets Parliment meets DJ Shadow. And its free! Legit! In high quality! 4 whole albums!
Oh whatever. Go listen to Sons of William or Blue Merle or something for the ninetieth god damn time then, see if I care. Hrmph.
I think you should sample your rants and remix them. There could be a ‘Best Of’ collection, sold for charity. Think of the children… The ear less children…
EARLESS. It’s one freaking word.
Well, clearly this event didn’t end too well for Morgan Harrington. Certainly all the readers of cvillain know by now that she disappeared during/after the Metallica concert on Saturday. The university community was informed Monday morning, and by last night it hit the national media on Nancy Grace and the Huffington Post. With the 24 hour media and internet of this day and age, it doesn’t take long for a not-too-uncommon local event to became a major national news story. By this morning, it made CNN’s front page. The cops are now scouring surveillance video (that must be like pulling teeth) to figure out wherever she may have roamed. Given what her parents say, she has a very close relationship with them. Maybe she just felt trapped under ice and wanted to escape for awhile, but police suspect foul play. It’s now considered a crime investigation. Her cell phone and one jacket were found in the U-Hall parking lot. I think in the back of everyone’s mind, we all fear the worst. These sorts of disappearances almost never end happily. The reality is that she is dead. They could search from here to Orion and never find her. It’s unfortunate, and I sympathize with her parents.
Disappearances happen all the time in the United States, so why is this one nationally newsworthy? This girl is cute, young, and blonde. It fits the trend for major national missing persons stories. It’s sad, but true. The second thing of note is that this is a heavy metal concert–Metallica specifically–which will fuel a whiplash from censorship freaks, concerned parents, and Tipper Gore, with their holier than thou attitudes. Interest groups will interpret all lyrics with bias, attempting to extract meaning that simply isn’t there. I kind of expect another national dialog on the so-called corrupting powers of music, perhaps not on the scale that we saw after Columbine, but perhaps what we saw in the 1980’s after Judas Priest was accused of influencing someone who was already mentally disturbed and should have been a sanitarium to commit suicide. Moreover, Charlottesville will want to bury this story. It’s a small city with a lot of wealthy white people and is constantly on the top places to live in the U.S. lists. A disappearance case can really blacken the city’s national reputation.
Police have searched the woods in around JPJ today, most recently around the baseball field and track. They suspect she was taken against her will. Parking lots around the arena are notorious places to get mugged. There isn’t a whole lot of crime in Charlottesville, but it is a small city of about 50,000 people. As a result, there are certainly bad seeds and distrustful people around. It takes some kind of monster to kidnap someone, commit assult and battery, and possibly murder a person. If the perpetrator is caught, he should be unforgiven for his crimes. Accomplices should be unforgiven too. Her parents must have felt really frantic in the last few days not knowing where their daughter is–whether she is safe or even alive. They must be on the frayed ends of sanity. You know, the terrible thing is that if she was allowed back in the JPJ, she’d still be alive. This is just a thing that should not be. There are a lot of crazy people in this world, those who commit crimes and show no remorse. I’m hoping the media doesn’t go out of control in trying to find a scapegoat in what amounts to an anomalous crime. Maybe she’ll turn up and get a great big welcome home from her friends and family.
I’ve been waiting for exactly the same type of concerned outpouring from those who STILL wish to demonize ‘metal’ music. While the events are undeniably heartbreaking, and I personally maintain hope that she reappears in fine form, with life still in her eyes, I do know that current situations provide a perfect opportunity to tie two events together, and draw a conclusion. Good write.
i certainly wouldnt abduct an ugly chick.

I didn’t even know about this until I heard it quickly blurted about on CNN in between all their regualr repetitious bullshit. It’s really sad and I hope in some realistic way that she will turn up soon.
*unrealistic
I agree. These things almost end well. I know to her parents, nothing else matters more than just finding her safe and sound, but she just disappeared like a phantom. Lord knows where she is.
If you read some of the comments on the local media websites, a number of people are blaming the “violence” of the lyrics of heavy metal for subliminally influencing someone to commit this crime. But she was somewhere outside of the stadium. For all we know, ********* took her.
*Edited for referencing someone by name.*
So if the killer turns himself in, does he get 150 grand?
