You don’t have to drive to DC this weekend to catch Bob Mould and Richard Morel’s night of club music madness. BLOWOFF is one of the biggest gay dance parties going in DC (and growing in NY) and it’s here in C-Ville this weekend (Friday night at R2). It’s at 9:30 Club on Saturday. Expect house remixes, dance rock, and everything including the kitchen sink. If you want a lot of shirtless beefcake, though, I’m guessing you might have.
If you haven’t had a chance to witness a C.L.A.W. (Charlottesville Ladies Arm Wrestling) event, I’ve found a pretty cool video on YouTube of a match between Pitbull and Sparkles.
On May 17th and 18th, this Friday and Saturday, Charlottesville will face The University of Virginia Graduation Weekend 2008. If you haven’t noticed, zombie week is really just calm before all hell breaks loose. In fact, graduation weekend is such a hellish time, that UVA even has an office devoted to it called (cue deep scary voice) “The Office of Major Events.” I’m not kidding, check out the website. I heard they wanted to name it Office for Hell on Earth, but that offended the religious right.
So despite this impending nightmare, Charlottesville residents, future worker bees and their relieved parents all storm Charlottesville like it’s June 6th, 1944, only this time it’s May 17th, 2008 and we’re going to call it G-Day. Why do they do it? Who knows, but maybe we can help you out a little…
We just got word via David Swanson and confirmed by the Daily Progress that Cindy Sheehan will be speaking at the Omni Hotel on May 22nd from 7PM to 9PM. Tickets will be available at the door and cost $10 for students; $20 for general admission; $50 for admission and a photo with Sheehan; and $100 for admission, a photo with Sheehan and priority seating.
Seriously, $100 for a photo? I guess now that she’s trying to be an elected politician, she needs the money, but this seems a little odd. Where is that money going? To her California campaign or to anti-war stuff. I guess this time, the pro-war protesters won’t be present. Or will they?
Today begins Charlottesville 2nd Annual Bike Week. This event is brought to you by The Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation. The idea behind this event is the promotion of physical activity and environmentally friendly transportation.
At noon Charlottesville’s Mayor, Dave Norris, former Mayor and current Council member, David Brown, and ACCT Executive Director, Zachary Shahan, will receive an award from Bill Nesper, the Director of the Bicycle Friendly Community program at City Hall. This will kick-off Bike Week events beginning May 12th through May 18th.
I jacked the weekend preview to get revenge on Thor for stealing my Washington Post story. What’s the line? The Early bird gets the worm? Uck worms…which are certain to be out in full force after all this rain. Unfortunately, according to the weather forecast, this is not the last of it. Today is supposed to be rain with thunder and lightning (geee, thanks Thor). Tomorrow is calling for partly sunny with some rain. Sunday calls for rain, rain, and more rain. Don’t let the weather keep you in (unless there are tornado warnings, in which case only weather women should be out)…put on your red panties and check out some of what is lined up for the weekend:
Yay! It’s finally here! Government Services Day on the DT Mall. Police will be dropping from the tops of buildings. Students will be yelling at each other about something or other under the Free Speech Monument. I’m talking about fire trucks, tours of the Paramount, prizes, giveaways and all kinds of good stuff! Even Mayor Dave Norris will be there. You can even talk to your local utilities about their current and upcoming projects.
If you’re down there around lunch time, you’ll probably see me.
Another long weekend of drinking has passed. It was actually quite eventful. Checked out Fridays after Five and loved the band. Hit the mall scene on Friday and Saturday. All and all the nice weather seemed to bring out everyone and everyone was in high spirits.
A little birdie (Tuesday) did report a sudden closing of Cassis on Friday night. I received this news AFTER I passed by on Friday night and noticed it closed for “a private party”, which did seem to be the case. Private party on a Friday night?! Not sure what happened with the place Friday, but it was all a bit out of the norm.
Escafe had been missing a doorknob, apparently it has been replaced…more news on the original later.
Van Halen finally went down as planned and Bruce Springsteen was said to have been awesome.
No kickball games were canceled.
The sun was shining all weekend and is still going strong!
On Thursday, you can attend an all day Government Services Fair on the downtown mall. While you won’t get to ride the Ferris Wheel, you can oodle at a bunch of local government agencies, goggle at various police and fire department vehicles (hopefully they bring the armored personnel carrier), watch the SWAT team kick ass and heckle some live debaters. If you are heading West Bound on I-64, you need to expect some traffic delays. VDOT is shutting down one of the lanes near milepost 108, just past Crozet. [VDOT]
Want to know what you are buying, where it came from and how to get locally made products? Check out Locallectual.com, which despite being a little confusing to navigate, gives shoppers the ability to track the social and environmental impact of their purchases. You get to participate in the discussion too. So head on over there and support local and ecologically friendly stuff. I’m sure the two local founders, Karen and Jessica would love to hear thoughts from you.
Order from Horder is shutting down. One of our keen birdies wanted to let everyone know that Order from Horder is having a 20 to 50% off sale. Now, the weird thing is that Order from Horder still has its website up… maybe they are doing internet only sales. Anyone know?
Um, I can never beat Shaun to the punch. You are going to miss a lot of sweet stuff if you don’t read his preview over at cvilleMUSE. How do you like these apples? Van Halen (please don’t be canceled), Ryan Shaw, Birdlips and Friday’s After Five (with Eli Cook).
First Friday’s
How could you overlook Pinkie’s amazing preview on cvilleMUSE. She covers every single venue and every single artist, with links to boot! Apparently, there will be MUSE special ops walking around handing out business cards. Try to find them and tell them Thor sent you.
Off the Cusp
If MUSE always kicks my butt on real events at least I can find stuff off the beaten track. If you are a techno-mac-loving-uber-nerd, you should go to BeCamp, which is a part communist, part hippy part electronic festival of computers and crazy ideas like “FOAF,” “Grails,” “Parallel Computing,” “Selenium -web tier testing” and a bunch of other things that scare me.
