Bizou! Bless you.

I noticed that there wasn’t a review on this. You don’t have to post this, cause I know my restaurant reviews suck, plus I can’t spell restaurant [fixed by editor].

My office went there the other day, and they kindly put together three tables to suit our 10 person party. The other option was to sit outside, but it was about to rain, and the man at the door made a good point, “if eet start to rain, and no table inside, you stay outside.” They set up the tables quickly and had us seated.

The menu is short, but varied. I’ve had a few things now. The meatloaf is awesome. The pork tostada looked great, but the report was that it wasn’t totally filling. I know the fried chicken is also a good choice. Everything is presented very colorfully, and yummily. This particular time I order the special, catfish tacos. They were great. I added some Sriracha sauce, cause I like things hot. I got it on my pants. I do that.

This is one of those places that forgot to or intentionally didn’t redecorate at the end of the 80’s. or maybe the 70’s. But I like the retro feel to it. The booths, however, are a little uncomfortable. The service is excellent and very cute. I like how they work together and that no one server has one table. The lunch prices are a little higher than other places ($8-12) but the food is totally worth it, in my opinion.

How about some other reviews of this place?

Summary of Washington Post Food Article About Charlottesville

Some of you have been talking about the Washington Post article on Charlottesville titled “If It Tastes Good, It’s in Charlottesville.” We even planted a few cVillain spies in the slide show! Jane Black got around town, alright. But, I’ve got to call her out on some inaccuracies in her opinion. Sorry, Jane, had to get a little Villainous on this one! :) You get a lot of stuff right about Charlottesville dining, but let’s be real here!

  1. Rev Soup: “A bit grungy but cheerful, with a menu of comforting and, more important, cheap soups and sandwiches.” NOT CHEAP. Who ever said Rev Soup was cheap?! Some of the soups are amazing, but good luck getting out of there on the cheap.
  2. Albemarle Baking: “I tasted two pastries on my first visit, and they were so good that on my second I ignored the No. 1 rule of food writing: Never eat the same thing twice. One was an Alexander, whose delicate, sweet crust.” STOP RIGHT THERE…. Albemarle Baking does make amazing baguettes, but their pastries are NOT delicate. They look delicate but I would never rave about the pastries.
  3. Mas: You missed some of the best dishes! What about the artichoke goat cheese dip, the bacon wrapped dates or any of the smoked tomato/beef dishes!?
  4. Hamilton’s: “long a standard for its simple American food and attentive service. The menu offers nothing terribly surprising..” I need to double check this, but didn’t Hamilton’s just launch a pretty wild dessert menu?
  5. Hot Cakes. “Getting tuna sent back because a lot of you like to eat it in a stage of a hockey puck.” Where’s the love, baby? Did you forget little old cVillain deserves credit for that comment? Next time, give us some kudos! We have the full note posted! My favorite line: “Tired to see those snobby ladies eating steak with Iced Tea, asking ice to put in a delicious glass of Sancerre” … You can read the full French A-Hole with Principle article RIGHT HERE!

Did I get it right? Oh, and for some really good restaurant reviews, check out our restaurant review page.

Name the New High End Burger Joint Coming to the Corner

burger, high end, charlottesville, dining, orbit, food

Well, we got the hat tip and apparently, Orbits new owners plan to upgrade the space that formally held Orbits into a “Gourmet Burger Restaurant.” Ooo, sounds sweet, but will it work on the Corner?

Maybe you’ve heard of some of the hot chains out there like “NYC Burger Co.,” “The Counter” or “Pop Burger.” It’s all the rage right now.

J.R., one of the new owners wanted to let cVillains know that they are holding a naming contest for the burger joint AND there is a $500 award to the person that names it!

Vegetarian’s Guide To Charlottesville

So I embarked on an odyssey last week (does that sound too serious?), to find out about cville’s vegetarian offerings. Given some of the comments on the posts related to this, let me clarify what that means. I was not looking for vegetarian ONLY restaurants, just places that, lets says you took a date to that happened to be vegetarian, he/she would be quite happy. So all of you hippies take a hike, this is not the post for you.

The Breakfast Battle: Bluegrass Grill & Bakery vs. Blue Moon

http://www.flickr.com/photos/75554278@N00/448059654/The Breakfast Battle: Bluegrass Grill vs. Blue Moon

I am sure after at least 10 comments on Blue Moon everyone is fully aware of my love affair with the place. It is not only a Sunday morning tradition, but the highlight of my week (that and South Street on Tuesdays—which Thor beat me to discussing). I make it a point about once a month to try a new breakfast place (Sunday or otherwise). My most recent new place was Bluegrass Grill & Bakery. I went on a weekday to avoid the mass line that seems to enviably appear every Saturday and Sunday morning.

Veggie Tales 5: Zo.Ca.Lo-King of Fancy Veggie Food

Dependable Zo.Ca.Lo…what do you have to offer to those meat weary folks? Apparently just one dish, an amazing dish I have never had before in my life. The lone vegetarian warrior on the entrees menu is the “Black Bean and Corn Relleno”. I really didn’t know what to expect, I just read the description: smoked tomato grits, smoked pico, cilantro buttermilk honey”, figured it was cool to eat and ordered. I should warn you, this isn’t some “I am on a diet so I am trying out vegetarian food” type of dish. This thing definitely has healthy quantities of butter and cream…perhaps French cuisine had an affair with a Mexican damsel from the south and many years later Mr. Frenchie comes back to town to find out he has a lost daughter…this is his little chalupita.

Free for All 4.0

Hello all! I have just returned from a week in the crummy mid-west. Being there was a pleasant reminder of why I love Cville. I see that while I was away the boys went to play…and neglected the Free for Alls. Write Away. :)

Veggie Tales 4: Eppie’s

If you are looking for the vegetarian deal of the century, then Eppie’s on the downtown mall is the place to be. Their menu offering is pretty meat heavy except for the side’s section, which allows you the choice of a veggie only platter in 3 or 4 choice combos with a generous piece of corn bread.

I opted for mac n’ cheese, collard greens and coleslaw. For around 6 bucks I received an impressive amount of food that I couldn’t even finish. Everything on the plate was good quality. Not to say there isn’t any room for improvement like making the collard greens in a more modern manner or using a different cheese on the mac n’cheese, but the value per vegetable was really good. They had a wide variety of sides on the menu which I will definitely go back for. For a southern food lunch, it was light and left me happy…happy to know even with western fare this vegetarian craze can be satiated!

macncheese

I also noted one of the kitchen staff came outside to offer a bowl of water for one of the customers that had their dog with them. I found that to be a terrific gesture. Talk about southern hospitality!
