Camino Invites You In For A Bay Dinner & Discussion

Our friends at Camino will be hosting an informational benefit dinner to promote awareness of the Chesapeake Clean Water Act in conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. There will be information, and CBF representatives to answer any questions. The CCWA will be voted on later this month.

We will have two seatings on Tuesday, March 9th. One from 5:30-6:30, and the second 8:00-9:00. There is room for about 40 people at each seating.

The menu will feature sea/bay food that is affected by by the water that runs into our streams and rivers to the Bay. The menu is being fine tuned as we speak, and will feature such tasty items as Rappahannock River Oysters, Bay Scallops, Hog Island Clams, Wild Stripe Bass, and Poached Flounder with Blue Crab.
Come enjoy a great meal, and find out what you can do to help promote clean soil, water, and food.

Reservations are required, 434-293-2323.  [Info]

Silly CBS, Cougars Hunt In Bars, Not Neighborhoods

The Newsplex kicked off a series of Valentines Day related ‘exposés’ recently, with the above Cougar Hunter interview.  While we certainly can’t think of why the Martha Jefferson, Locust Grove, or Woolen Mills area would be mentioned, when we all know our 2008 poll indicated that Blue Light Grill is the certified hot spot for prowling.  TownMe.com seems to be the go-to source for the CBS article, however, the site seems to have altered its content away from actually cataloging information, and towards releasing open source wiki-esque software.  Additionally we can’t locate anything in the either the Google Cache or Wayback Machine to fill in the gaps here.

Have any other establishments climbed the ladder since July of ‘08?

Charlottesville Myths – More Restaurants Than DC? (Per Capita)

There has been a longstanding rumor that Charlottesville, with it’s plethora of dining establishments, actually may have more places to eat than Washington D.C., and possibly even New York City per capita.  We’ve quoted this on occasion publicly, and overhead quite a few friends and acquaintances asserting it as legitimate fact.  So how does it stack up?  Any truth to this rumor? »Read More

2009 Best/Worst For CVILLE’S MUSIC SCENE

It’s certainly a busy, busy time of year, but there’s definitely time to recollect the highs and lows our local music scene has seen in ‘09. Here’s what comes to mind. We’d love to hear your thoughts!

1) iS Venue calls it quits after barely a year in operation, and while some great acts came through to play the joint, the crowd size and sound generally left people wanting.

     **Best or Worst?**

2) Holy Smokes Booking: Jacob Wolf came to town and hit the ground running last spring, booking and promoting awesome, refreshing music for Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar, The Bridge PAI, The Garage & 12 Street Taphouse. I think this town owes a thank you to him for helping fight the good fight against jam bands and bluegrass. »Read More

Michael Jackson FBI Files Released

There’s some good reading in the 333 pages of files the FBI compiled over the years on the King of Pop. The feds just released the files today because of a Freedom of Information request. Here’s the link: FBI Michael Jackson Files.

Dominion Nailed For Overcharging

The crooks at Dominion Virginia Power didn’t wait to see if they’d lose that billion-dollar Virginia Beach lawsuit before raising electric rates. They did it last year, as the State Corporation Commission and the state attorney general nailed the power giant for overcharging customers and raking in almost $400 million more than it should have last year. The sad thing is that it looks like Dominion is going to be allowed to wiggle out of their million-dollar theft by only returning a portion of what they stole. The Virginian-Pilot has the story.

Fourteen Days To A Whiter Smile

Sexy_No_Smoking

With many in the bar scene grumbling over the smoking ban going into effect December 1st, and the inevitably approaching winter temps (although 70* today does provide some hope), we have to wonder if such a die-hard group of drinkers will shift to accommodate establishments which cater to the new requirements for indoor inhaling.  As the new Virginia code rather clearly states:

Any portion of a restaurant that is constructed in such a manner that the area where smoking may be permitted is (i) structurally separated from the portion of the restaurant in which smoking is prohibited and to which ingress and egress is through a door and (ii) separately vented to prevent the recirculation of air from such area to the area of the restaurant where smoking is prohibited. At least one public entrance to the restaurant shall be into an area of the restaurant where smoking is prohibited.

We have been compiling a list of establishments which meet these criteria; however the ‘public entrance’ requirement knocks a few out of the running.  Additionally, from having traveled to quite a few locations with indoor smoking bans, there are always proprietors willing to accept the risk of a $25 fine (businesses = per person smoking? / individuals = per cigarette you’ve been observed to smoke?).  The code doesn’t clearly lay out the enforcement structure of these fines, although I’d imagine with 23 states having preceded us, there should have been ample code to plagiarize.

So, for those of us who continue to enjoy a little masochism with our mimosas, what locations are you betting will benefit from the new laws?  [Photo Credits]
